    PRESS KIT THE VENUE 470 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP MEN & WOMEN 04-13 SEPTEMBER 2006 RIZHAO, CHINA THE VENUE The venue for the 2006 International 470 Class World Championships is the offshore sea area of Wanpingkou in Rizhao with two 3000 m diameter race areas 500 m from the beach, the Wanping- kou square and the ultramodern Rizhao Interna- tional Water Sports Base. Water depth is 10 m. Rizhao, meaning “the sun shines”, got its name in year 1087, a beautiful oriental coastal city with civilisation dating back 5000 years with its blue sky, jade sea and 60 km golden sand beaches looks forward to welcoming with open arms and warm heart and hospitality the Europe Class sailing family from all around the world to the opening up China. THE MARINA The Marina After careful studies amongst other in Spain, Italy, Korea and Cyprus and design by world known planners the Water Sports Base took 11 months to build. Land area is 820000 sq.m. with Yacht Club 7340 sq.m, Race Control Center 6540 sq.m., Boat- house 1830 sq.m, Measurement Hall 800 sq.m, Sailboat Square 25000 sq.m., Container Yard 15000 sq.m., grassland 350000 sq.m. as well as 1500 m of running path, landscape fountain, 78 flagpoles, 25 workboats, outside basketball and tennis grounds. Water area is 400000 sq.m with 190000 sq.m. boat mooring quay 9 m high and 560 m long and a slipway of 50 x 150 m, floating jetties with 320 berths and up to 450 m wavebreakers.     Carissimi, siamo finalmente giunti a questo appuntamento Olimpico! Lo Sport – nella più nobile delle sue funzioni – potrà riunire tutti sotto un’unica bandiera: quella della solidarietà, del rispetto e della sana competizione. Questi lunghi mesi che ci stiamo lasciando faticosamente alle spalle hanno severamente provato il nostro spirito e ci hanno costretto a considerare in maniera più genuina i rapporti umani, le priorità della nostra vita, i nostri affetti. Lo Sport in questo contesto ha rafforzato la sua valenza sociale dimostrandosi un collante e nel contempo una valvola di sfogo. Questi Giochi devono e vogliono rappresentare una rinascita verso un graduale ritorno alla normalità, senza però dimenticare quanto accaduto. Preparare una spedizione Olimpica non è affatto semplice, soprattutto in uno sport come il nostro dove la preparazione atletica è solo uno dei molteplici componenti: meteorologia, tecnologia, programmazione, logistica, gestione delle risorse sono solo alcuni degli aspetti che attraversano in maniera trasversale il mondo della vela. Per questo vorrei ringraziare tutti coloro che hanno partecipato alla formazione di questa squadra: il Direttore Tecnico Michele Marchesini, tutti i Tecnici che in questo quadriennio hanno lavorato meticolosamente, il Team Manager Guglielmo Vatteroni, e tutto il comparto tecnico, medico e atletico dei collaboratori. Per ultimo – ma non certo per importanza, visto che questa pubblicazione è dedicata proprio a loro – il mio pensiero va ai ragazzi che ci rappresenteranno ai Giochi Olimpici: questi anni di preparazione li hanno visti maturare come atleti ma soprattutto sotto il profilo umano. Il mio augurio è che possano raccogliere il massimo da questa esperienza che rimane uno dei momenti più alti e indimenticabili nella vita di uno sportivo.
