Vice CYC Sailors’ Link with Vanuatu 5 Commodore, Anita Faulks, warmly Winter 2008 Racing Results 6 introduced the medalists, coach Victor Kovalenka and Michael Jones Another way to enjoy your sailing 10 (Yachting Australia representative), Changes to the Special highlighting the significance of the Regulations of Yachting Australian sailing team’s outstanding Australia in force from performance at the Beijing Olympics. 1 July 2009 to 30 June 2013 11 Australia’s world ranking in sailing is now second only to Great Britain. From the Manager 14 Michael Jones provided context to this historical success by recounting the story of how Australian sailors only commenced campaigning at the Olympic level in 2000. Notably, it was in March 2006 that Australian sailing has received significant investment and structured support, which has enabled it to further grow into a high performance professional sport. As an encouragement for our young sailors, Michael stated that sailing champions have attained their goals in different ways: some have been born with talent; others have worked consistently hard. An important lesson is that each has taken responsibility for his or her progress. Laughter burst amongst the audience with the revelation that disagreements are normal, even amongst professionals; the secret being good ‘relationship management’ skills! THE INTERNATIONAL FLYING DUTCHMAN CLASS BOOK www.sailfd.org 1 2 Preface and acknowledgements for the “FLYING DUTCHMAN CLASS BOOK” by Alberto Barenghi, IFDCO President The Class Book is a basic and elegant instrument to show and testify the FD history, the Class life and all the people who have contributed to the development and the promotion of the “ultimate sailing dinghy”. Its contents show the development, charm and beauty of FD sailing; with a review of events, trophies, results and the role past champions . Included are the IFDCO Foundation Rules and its byelaws which describe how the structure of the Class operate . Moreover, 2002 was the 50th Anniversary of the FD birth: 50 years of technical deve- lopment, success and fame all over the world and of Class life is a particular event. This new edition of the Class Book is a good chance to celebrate the jubilee, to represent the FD evolution and the future prospects in the third millennium. The Class Book intends to charm and induce us to know and to be involved in the Class life. Please, let me assent to remember and to express my admiration for Conrad Gulcher: if we sail, love FD and enjoyed for more than 50 years, it is because Conrad conceived such a wonderful dinghy and realized his dream, launching FD in 1952. Conrad, looked to the future with an excellent far-sightedness, conceived a “high-perfor- mance dinghy”, which still represents a model of technologic development, fashionable 3 water-line, low minimum hull weight and performance . Conrad ‘s approach to a continuing development of FD, with regard to materials, fitting and rigging evolution, was basic for the FD success.

PRESS KIT THE VENUE 470 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP MEN & WOMEN 04-13 SEPTEMBER 2006 RIZHAO, CHINA THE VENUE The venue for the 2006 International 470 Class World Championships is the offshore sea area of Wanpingkou in Rizhao with two 3000 m diameter race areas 500 m from the beach, the Wanping- kou square and the ultramodern Rizhao Interna- tional Water Sports Base. Water depth is 10 m. Rizhao, meaning “the sun shines”, got its name in year 1087, a beautiful oriental coastal city with civilisation dating back 5000 years with its blue sky, jade sea and 60 km golden sand beaches looks forward to welcoming with open arms and warm heart and hospitality the Europe Class sailing family from all around the world to the opening up China. THE MARINA The Marina After careful studies amongst other in Spain, Italy, Korea and Cyprus and design by world known planners the Water Sports Base took 11 months to build. Land area is 820000 sq.m. with Yacht Club 7340 sq.m, Race Control Center 6540 sq.m., Boat- house 1830 sq.m, Measurement Hall 800 sq.m, Sailboat Square 25000 sq.m., Container Yard 15000 sq.m., grassland 350000 sq.m. as well as 1500 m of running path, landscape fountain, 78 flagpoles, 25 workboats, outside basketball and tennis grounds. Water area is 400000 sq.m with 190000 sq.m. boat mooring quay 9 m high and 560 m long and a slipway of 50 x 150 m, floating jetties with 320 berths and up to 450 m wavebreakers.
