REGULARS April 2019

10 Book Reviews from Borzoi Books This morning the sun poured into the office for an hour or so - long enough to lift spirits and generate a positive burst of pre-print energy’. British Summer Time is waiting is in the wings, just an hour ahead, on 1st April. 14 Crossword Mothering Sunday poems - we received a number of poems to forward to 17 Local Authority Information, Blood Donor our judges, who were delighted to read this unique collection of ‘HUG - style’ Sessions, Community Notices poems. They came back to us with thoughtful and experienced feedback and two outstanding winners – see p16. Thank you to all our poets for sharing their 18 Local Elections ‘hugs’, and to our judges for their wise words. For over a week the office has been busy with local election issues, mostly 18 Parish Council traffic and parking but I’m sure that other ‘highlights’ will spark a few lively conversations this month! Local elections take place every four years and often 19&32 pass without much fuss, leaving the town or parish short of elected councillors Correspondence to fulfil the important role of councillors. Local councils have a variety of powers and duties which impact directly on the community, including allotments, parks, 20 Planning burial grounds, memorials, bye-laws and boundaries, as well as working with Highways on roads, street lighting and parking, and with District on tourism and planning. A number of these will be key to our communities over the next four 21-22 Tourism Questionnaire years. Whether you stand as a candidate or not, you can be involved - by going along to council and/ or committee meetings. The work of council is mostly done Update from our MP 23 by the committees, passing issues to the full council for decisions, etc.. (NB. Our Events diary local councils are not political.)

24-25 LOCAL BUSINESS DIRECTORY It’s a delight to have Easter coming soon – family days out, catching up with friends after a long and tough winter, and some beautiful, meaningful church Events including Festivals, Exhibitions, services. We may even have some ‘appropriate’ weather! Hmm, it might be 26-29 time for a visit to the coast to find a fresh piece of seaweed to bring back and Concerts, Local Fundraising and Walks hang in the garden! 30 Local church services Whatever your plans are, the Cotswold Times team wish you a happy Easter.

BOURTON_JUNE_2018_2.indd 18 19/05/2018 08:30 Cotswolds doctors are backing a NO SHOW campaign

An extra 100,000 appointments for patients are being made available across the county’s 75 practices over the next year. These will mainly be provided by GPs and nurses, with clinical pharmacists, paramedics, mental health workers and physiotherapists now working in local surgeries to offer a greater range of skills and services, and freeing up GP time. Cotswold Medical Practice staff have been taking action to reduce the number of missed appointments across its Bourton-on-the-Water and Northleach surgeries. Dr Caroline Bennett, the Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group lead for the North Cotswolds, said: “We send reminder There were 187,000 missed appointments in Gloucestershire texts to our patients with mobiles, and contact anyone who GP surgeries and hospitals last year, that’s has missed three appointments. > 30,000 hours of NHS time wasted. “People may need to cancel from time to time - if they let us know, the appointment could be given to another person > more than 60,000 hospital appointments missed in need. > 125,000 GP surgery appointments missed. “Our practices are working together to create more The NHS works hard to ensure that appointments which appointments at evenings and weekends, giving people become free are given to someone else – but, if none of more choice for when they visit the surgery to help fit in with them were filled, it would cost GlosNHS £13m a year. busy lives.” VILLAGE LITTER PICK SUNDAY 7th APRIL Meet at the front of the Community Centre between 10.15 and 10.30am. Litter picking equipment will be provided and any rubbish collected should be brought back to the Centre for disposal in the on-site refuse containers. Volunteers will be asked to pick a particular area of the village, so that we can cover as large an area as possible. Even if you only have 1/2 an hour to spare, this will still be a great help. We hope that residents of all ages will come along in sufficient numbers to enable us to really make a difference, and look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on the day. Any queries in the meantime, please call the Parish Council office on 01451 820712. As usual, fingers crossed for fine weather…

Develop a Backbone not a Wishbone

A Moreton resident recently wrote suggesting Cotswold Times includes more articles and information for the young people of the town. What a great idea! If there is a club or group, which involves activities for the teenagers of the town, we would love to hear from you.

That very evening the following article appeared on Facebook for the world to see.

“I’m bored.” Two words, which drop off the tongue so easily - it appears nothing changes.

Mid table Security For Ladies 2nds Ladies 1sts Pushing For Third The Ladies 2nds are sitting comfortable at mid table in their first season in Severn Division 2. Their record so far is pretty even. Out of 13 matches they have won 5 drawn 4 and lost 4 to sit on 16 points in 5th position out of 9 but with a game in hand. Notable results have been a recent 3 nil win away and a 3 all draw with top of the table Shipton Oliffe, a 4 nil win against Cirencester and 2 goalless draws against 3rd placed Gloucester. Its fair to say that the 2nds haven’t been a free scoring team this season with only 19 goals but the flip- side is that they’ve had a solid defence with only 16 conceded. Sophie Collett is the top scorer on 5 but Lily Fletcher and Freya Gilbert are not far behind with 3 and Captain Petra Lorman and Lydia Harding have 2. 2 goods wins and 2 draws in the last month has taken the Ladies 1st team upto 4th in the Severn Division 1. A 5-1 away win against Badgers started the sequence, followed by an even better 8-1 home win against Evesham & Badsey. The 2 draws were equally as important coming against 2 of the teams above them in the league. The first was a 1 all away game against East Glos and the second a no score home draw to 2nd placed Gloucester. With 3 matches left, 2nd in the league is unattainable but 3rd place is on as they’re 1 point behind East Glos with 2 games in hand on them. Ladies 3rds Battling Hard The Ladies 3rds have had some mixed result in the last month with a win, draw and 2 losses to Newent and Cirencester. The win was a good 2-1 victory against Lansdown 3rds and the draw, 1 all with other 4. It’s a team game though, and as noted, you also need a good Stroud 3rds. Lucy Jackson and Hannah Friend have found some defence and midfield. Jess Laughton has had a great season and been great form scoring a number of goals between them for the team. a rock in defence for the team. Young Megan Gibson has also done well in goal for the seconds and earnt points for the team with her saves on several occasions. Young players to keep an eye on as emerging talent are Honour Fletcher in midfield, her twin Lily in attack and this month’s Players Card, attacking midfielder Freya Gilbert. Good Win In Men’s Last Home Game The Men’s team will have been pleased to take a convincing 6-1 win against Stroud B in their last home match of the season. The 2 previous fixtures had been a 6 nil away loss to 2nd placed Lansdown A and a 2-1 home loss to Stroud A. The last match of the season is away to top of the league Gloucester A but its likely that BASHC will finish the year in mid table at 6th. Not bad for a first year in the Marches 1 which has also seen a number of young players come through.
