Introduction:
-2nd Largest Country -3.86 million square miles -covers 6 times zones
Regions of Canada:
7 Regions: 1) Appalachian Highlands, 2) St. Lawrence Lowlands, 3) Hudson Bay Lowlands
4) Canadian Shield, 5) Arctic Islands, 6) Interior Plains, 7) Mountain West (or Cordillera)
The Cordillera:
-contains 2 large mountain ranges: Rockies, The Pacific Range -Hugs much of the western shore/coast
-Fjords-narrow ocean inlets, surrounded by mountains -lots of animals
-Many Islands (mountain ranges covered by ocean water) -many rivers, orchards (fruits)
-Canadian Rockies (found in Alberta) some of the world’s best mountain scenery (BEAUTIFUL)
-major recreation areas in the Rockies
The Arctic Islands:
-(3 largest islands) Ellesmere, Victoria and Baffin (which is the 5th largest island in the world)
-most of the islands are located above the Arctic Circle
-very cold, ground frozen, brutal climate
The Interior Plains:
-covers a large portion of the mid-section of the country
-grasslands (for farming and cattle ranches)
-Canada’s Breadbasket (hay, oats, barley, rye and many other
The Canadian Shield:
-covers 1/3 of Canada -forms a horseshoe around Hudson Bay
-Ancient Rock, lots of forests, thousands of lakes, rapids, waterfalls
The Hudson Bay Lowlands:
-covered by flat swamplands -stunted trees -peat moss, decayed vegetation
-around Hudson Bay
St. Lawrence Lowlands:
-smallest region -where most Canadians live -toronto
-mostly flat, few rolling hills, ponds, lakes -good farmland -1/3 of agriculture
-fruits, vegetables, barley, soybeans, oats
The Appalachian Highlands:
-eastern reaches of the country, borders the Atlantic Ocean
-hilly, rocky shorelines, excellent harbors for fishing, forests
Resources:
-Water: abundant, thousands of lakes, streams, rivers, used for transportation, hydroelectricity
-Forests: abundant, used for paper industry
-Fish: east coast USED to have a lot, overfishing was a problem/game-fishing
-Mining: copper, gold, diamonds, iron ore, zinc….but OIL and NATURAL GAS are the most important
Canada’s Economy:
-2/3 hold services jobs: hotel, tourism, education, healthcare, legal and financial services
-1/5 hold a job in manufacturing (making things)
-lumber industry, paper-milling (newsprint)
-farming, agriculture industry
Canada’s Food Export:
-Ranching (13 million heads of cattle), huge beef exporter
