(Rusty) Schweickart is a retired business and government executive and from 2002- 2015 served as CEO, Chair of the Board and Chair Emeritus of B612 Foundation. He co- founded B612 with Ed Lu in 2002. In 2014 Schweickart co-founded Asteroid Day with Dr Brian May (QUEEN), Danica Remy (Current President B612) and filmmaker Grigorij Richters Schweickart retired from ALOHA Networks, Inc. in 1998 where he served as President and CEO from 1996 through 1998. ALOHA was a data communications company specializing in high performance, satellite internet access equipment. Schweickart was formerly the Executive Vice President of CTA Commercial Systems, Inc. and Director of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Systems. Prior to his CTA work Schweickart founded and was president of Courier Satellite Services, Inc., a global satellite communications company which developed LEO satellites to provide worldwide affordable data services Schweickart’s satellite and telecommunications work involved him in the development of international communications regulations and policies, including participation in the 1992 and 1995 World Radiocommunications Conferences (WRC) of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). Schweickart is the founder and past president of the Association of Space Explorers (ASE), the international professional society of astronauts and cosmonauts. The organization promotes the cooperative exploration and development of space and the use of space technology for human benefit. The ASE has a current membership of over 400 astronauts and cosmonauts from 33 nations. In 1977 Schweickart joined the staff of Governor Jerry Brown of California, and served in the Governor’s office for two years as his assistant for science and technology. -

No single space project in this period will be more exciting, or more impressive to mankind, or more important for the long-range exploration of space; and none will be so difficult or expensive to accomplish …” President John F. Kennedy May 25, 1961 Celebrate Apollo Exploring The Moon, Discovering Earth Less than five months into his new administration, on May 25, 1961, President John F. Kennedy, announced the dramatic and ambitious goal of sending an American safely to the moon before the end of the decade. Coming just three weeks after Mercury astronaut Alan Shepard became the first American in space, Kennedy’s bold challenge that historic spring day set the nation on a journey unparalleled in human history. Just eight years later, on July 20, 1969, Apollo 11 commander Neil Armstrong stepped out of the lunar module, taking “one small step” in the Sea of Tranquility, thus achieving “one giant leap for mankind,” and demonstrating to the world that the collective will of the nation was strong enough to overcome any obstacle. It was an achievement that would be repeated five other times between 1969 and 1972. By the time the Apollo 17 mission ended, 12 astronauts had explored the surface of the moon, and the collective contributions of hundreds of thousands of engineers, scientists, astronauts and employees of NASA served to inspire our nation and the world. -

Weibel Anthropology Department, Grand Valley State University, Allendale, MI 49401, USA; [email protected] Received: 30 June 2020; Accepted: 11 August 2020; Published: 13 August 2020 Abstract: This paper, based mainly on astronauts’ first-person writings, historical documents, and my own ethnographic interviews with nine astronauts conducted between 2004 and 2020, explores how encountering the earth and other celestial objects in ways never before experienced by human beings has influenced some astronauts’ cosmological understandings. Following the work of Timothy Morton, the earth and other heavenly bodies can be understood as “hyperobjects”, entities that are distributed across time and space in ways that make them difficult for human beings to accurately understand, but whose existence is becoming increasingly detectable to us. Astronauts in outer space are able to perceive celestial objects from vantages literally unavailable on earth, which has often (but not always) had a profound influence on their understandings of humanity, life, and the universe itself. Frank Wright’s term, the “overview effect”, describes a cognitive shift resulting from seeing the Earth from space that increases some astronauts’ sense of connection to humanity, God, or other powerful forces. Following NASA convention (NASA Style Guide, 2012), I will capitalize both Earth and Moon, but will leave all quotations in their original style. The “ultraview effect” is a term I introduce here to describe the parallel experience of viewing the Milky Way galaxy from the Moon’s orbit (a view described reverently by one respondent as a “something I was not ready for”) that can result in strong convictions about the prevalence of life in the universe or even unorthodox beliefs about the origins of humanity. -

Welcome to the fourth public hearing of the President’s Commission on Moon, Mars and Beyond. I’m Pete Aldridge. I’m the Chairman of the Commission. I’m especially pleased to be holding this hearing at the Galileo Academy of Science and Technology here in San Francisco. And what an appropriate name, first of all, and the school’s motto is “A new school under the stars.” So I thought that was quite appropriate that we be here. We would all like to thank Principal Margaret Chiu … and Vice Principal Anthony Hailey, administrator Bettie Grinnell, and the students and parents of the Galileo Academy for allowing us to be here today. The students are on the spring break, and although we know that the Galileo students are deeply interested in space, science, and technology, we also understand that spring break is spring break. Meanwhile, on the other side of the world, Principal Chiu, the school librarian Patrick Delaney, and other members of the faculty are in Shanghai participating in an educational exchange conference sponsored by Harvard University. ORAL HISTORY TRANSCRIPT RUSSELL L. SCHWEICKART INTERVIEWED BY REBECCA WRIGHT HOUSTON, TEXAS – 19 OCTOBER 1999 WRIGHT: Today is October 19, 1999. This oral history is being conducted at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, with Russell L. Schweickart, who is known as Rusty to his friends and colleagues. Interviewer is Rebecca Wright, with the Johnson Space Center Oral History Project. Thank you again for taking time to visit us today for this project. SCHWEICKART: You're welcome. WRIGHT: We'd like for you to start by telling us how your interest in flight and in space flight began. SCHWEICKART: It's hard to say how it began. I can recall several incidents from when I was very young, which kind of illustrate and refresh my memory that my interest started very young, but I can't honestly say any precise thing started it. I can remember when I was a kid, walking. I lived in the country, on a farm and my parents and I would walk on summer evenings around the local roads. I can remember one time I must have been five or something like that, I honestly don't remember, in that vicinity, and we were looking up at the moon, it was a full moon and fairly low in the sky, early evening, and I remember watching it go through the limbs of the trees. My parents asked me about it or I said something about the moon, and that was the first time I recall, I think, having said, "I'd like to go there one day," or, "People will go there one day," or something like that. -

Marshall, the Postal Service’s general counsel and executive vice president, and the stamp ceremony’s dedicating official. “We believe the stamps are a fitting tribute to everyone who supported the Apollo 11 program. Because they are Forever stamps, they will always be perfect for your cards, letters and care packages, and they are available for purchase nationwide today,” Marshall said. Joining Marshall to dedicate the stamps were Therrin Protze, chief operating officer, Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex; Kelvin Manning, associate director, Technical, Kennedy Space Center; Russell L.
