You have to pave your own way to stand out.” Wearing an understated ensemble of black jeans, a matching crewneck pullover and his omnipresent, never- smudged alabaster Adidas, Wu, 32, has made a career of quietly bucking fashion convention. His diverse résumé includes a stint as a toy designer in his teens and an incomplete degree from Parsons School of Design, which he left six months shy of graduation. Despite these unconventional beginnings, Wu became the designer of choice for celebrities like Michelle Williams, Diane Kruger and Michelle Obama— he designed both of the First Lady’s inaugural gowns—and, since 2013, has served as womenswear director of Hugo Boss. Known for his subtly sexy style, and with a successful label already to his name, Wu wasn’t, at the time of his Boss appointment, an obvious choice to head the 91-year-old German behemoth of precision tailoring. “It’s a different way of designing,” he says. “But it’s also incredible to work with a machine that has more than 10,000 employees. The move opened doors for the budding creative, but it required adjustments as well. “Life as I knew it flipped upside down,” Wu says. “I didn’t speak a word of English and didn’t want to leave my friends to go to a country I’d never heard of. But it defined me.     Michelle Obama, Has Not and Is Not Going to Flout the White Standard of Beauty By Zen Liwen, Beijing Foreign Studies University Introduction The 2008 presidential election witnessed the unprecedented coming into power of the first mixed-race President and the first black lady. Their victory has been celebrated as the radiant light for the ultimate liberation for black people. And Michelle Obama, though highly controversial during the presidential campaign, has been crowned as a pioneer for the black women to flout the demeaning white standard of beauty that has dominated public discourse for centuries. White standard of beauty, although having undergone significant changes, is anyhow the product of a patriarchal society. According to Professor Patton, the white standard of beauty today refers to being light-skinned, slim and wavy or straight hair, which has never been, through centuries, within the power sphere of women themselves1, as apposed to the white men dominating every aspect of life in American society. In the bipolar opposition between man and women, men are still superior over women. Therefore, no matter to what extent the white standard has changed, it is still the say of men, to be more specific, the white men, instead of women. This supremacist white standard of beauty has actually pushed not only the black women into the margin, but also most white women. Against this historical backdrop, this paper attempts to find out the truthfulness of Michelle’s forerunner role to defy the white standard of beauty through an analysis of Michelle Obama’s image during the presidential campaign.

ABSTRACT The purpose of this research was to analyze the exposure given to Michelle Obama’s fashion and clothing choices in six different magazines over a period of two years. The sample consisted of 144 magazines total, twenty four each from the fashion, news, and celebrity entertainment genres. A content analysis approach was used to gather and analyze the data. Framing theory was also used to further analyze the data in this study. Simple descriptive statistics such as, average and standard deviation, were used to represent and summarize the data collected. "I decided to write about Mrs. Obama's style because I love to shop and I am interested in fashion," Flynn, a history major from Westwood, Mass., said of her semester-ending project for her journalism class. For most, the fascination with Michelle Obama's clothes is as simple as that. "It's sort of the high-brow end of celebrity watching," said Sasha Iglehart, fashion director for Glamour magazine. For others, Obama's bold colors, brooches and biceps represent a national agenda. Admirers and detractors alike see her bare arms as her most symbolic fashion gesture thus far. "There's not only a strength in showing the arms, but there's also a welcoming aspect — 'Let's relax, and I'll take off my sweater and chat,'" Iglehart suggested.
