This study used qualitative research methods and data collection was carried out by following the ceremony held directly by the Maha Puja Navarathiri & Vijaya Dhasamiumat Hindu ceremony at the Sri Mariaman Temple, Medan City. This research was conducted at the Srimariaman temple, where the navaratri is carried out for nine days every night in a row by Hindus living in the city of Medan. The result of this research is that this celebration is a worship for goddesses who have fought long ago against evil, namely giants. This celebration performed at Worship was done to please the goddesses for nine days as many days as it took for the goddess to defeat the evil monster. -

O’Shea, Chair This dissertation presents a critical examination of dance and multiple movements across the Coromandel in a pivotal period: the long eighteenth century. On the eve of British colonialism, this period was one of profound political and economic shifts; new princely states and ruling elite defined themselves in the wake of Mughal expansion and decline, weakening Nayak states in the south, the emergence of several European trading companies as political stakeholders and a series of fiscal crises. In the midst of this rapidly changing landscape, new performance paradigms emerged defined by hybrid repertoires, focus on structure and contingent relationships to space and place – giving rise to what we understand today as classical south Indian dance. Far from stable or isolated tradition fixed in space and place, I argue that dance as choreographic ii practice, theorization and representation were central to the negotiation of changing geopolitics, urban milieus and individual mobility. -

By bringing these abuses into the light of day, the Hindu American Foundation is leading the fight for international policies that promote tolerance and understanding of Hindu beliefs and bring an end to religious persecution. Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH) Freedom of religion and expression are two of the most fundamental human rights. As the founder and former co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on India, I commend the important work that the Hindu American Foundation does to help end the campaign of violence against Hindus in South Asia. The 2013 Kumbh Mela, a grander form of the annual Kumbh, was purportedly the largest gathering of people in human history. Many of the participants carried cell phones, making it possible for us to use a data-driven approach to document this magnificent festival. We used Call Detail Records (CDRs) from participants attending the event, a total of 390 million records, to investigate its population dynamics. We report here on some of our preliminary findings. Introduction The Kumbh Mela is a religious Hindu festival that has been celebrated for hundreds of years. On the broad sandy flats left behind by the receding waters of the rainy season, a temporary “pop-up” megacity is constructed in a matter of weeks to house the festival. The Kumbh Mela has evoked endless fascination and scrutiny by observers dating back to Chinese and Arab itinerant scholars from centuries past, to contemporary academics, mostly social scientists and humanists of various disciplinary persuasions. Both participants and external observers have documented past Kumbh festivals, and this book brings together various perspectives using different methodologies to the study of the 2013 Kumbh Mela. In this chapter, we examine the use of cell phone communication metadata to study the 2013 Kumbh Mela. -

WORLD’S LARGEST RECORDED HUMAN GATHERING –TENS OF MILLIONS OF PILGRIMS -- CAPTURED BY PHOTOGRAPHER HANNES SCHMID EXHIBITION PRESENTS IMAGES OF FESTIVAL HELD ONCE EVERY 144 YEARS FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 2011 New York—As many as seventy-five million pilgrims assembled in Allahabad, North India for a month-long Maha Kumbh Mela festival from January to February 2001. It was the largest ever recorded gathering of human beings up to that time, and so immense that the crowd was visible from space. Swiss artist Hannes Schmid was there as Hindu pilgrims moved towards the banks of the sacred Ganges River, capturing this massive pilgrimage with his camera. From July 22 to November 13, 2011 the Rubin Museum of Art will present Schmid’s still and moving images of the festival during Human Currents: The World’s Largest Pilgrimage as Interpreted by Hannes Schmid. The Maha Kumbh Mela—the most important among Kumbh Mela festivals that celebrate gods’ symbolic triumph over demons—is held only once every one hundred forty-four years. Pilgrims mark the festivals by travelling to sites along the banks of the Ganges River, and never more so than during the 2001 Maha Kumbh Mela when a veritable sea of devotees of all ages, castes, and classes traveled from every corner of India to participate. 28 million pilgrims were said to have gathered on the main bathing day alone. “The day, when such a mass of pilgrims of all ages gather for a common purpose and destiny, has intrigued me for as long as I knew,” says photographer Hannes Schmid.
