LITERARIA An International Journal of New Literature Across the World ISSN: 2229-4600 VOL. 5, No. 1-2, JAN-DEC 2015 In Search of Enlightenment by Reading Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot SYED ISMYL MAHMOOD RIZVI Patna University, Patna ABSTRACT Beckett’s philosophical indebtedness has long been recognised – especially in conjunction with Dante, Descartes and Geulincx. In this article, I examine Beckettian universal values of Enlightenment, which will be exposed as self-serving mystifications that rationalize and instrumentalize the meaning of life. In this context, the awareness of the Enlightenment nature of Beckett’s writing in Waiting for Godot will be analysed along with the freedom appeal of his reader as he strives to attain the enlightenment. ‘For enlightenment, all that is needed is freedom.’ (Kant 1991 [1784]) Suppose an individual in the world which is a hard shell that he attempts to toss it away, but for what; to think beyond it, and to relocate him beyond it in order to attain enlightenment. Whenever he looks above into the sky, the high sky, the clouds, the flying birds, the stars, the moon, the sun and the cosmos, those make him to forget the hard shell for a while until his eyes fell upon it and he is recaptured. Still into the pupil of his eyes he is reflecting the cosmos. This energy within him, within anyone has vitality and potentiality to reflect the cosmos, and to look beyond the hard shell. Let’s say that he has had an enlightenment experience. Enlightenment is a fact. It is the Truth itself. -

Mijuskovic Full Member International Association of Greek Philosophy University of Athens, Greece ORCID iD: http://orcid.org/0000-0001-5950-7146 URL: http://worldphilosophynetwork.weebly.com E-Mail: [email protected] Abstract: In contrast to a little bit utopian standpoint offered by Plato in his teachings about the state or politeia where rulers aren`t “in love with power but in virtue”, Aristotle's teaching on the same subject seems very realistic and pragmatic. In his most important writing in this field called "Politics", Aristotle classified authority in the form of two main parts: the correct authority and moose authority. In this sense, correct forms of government are 1.basileus, 2.aristocracy and 3.politeia. These forms of government are based on the common good. Bad or moose forms of government are those that are based on the property of an individual or small governmental structures and they are: 1.tiranny, 2.oligarchy and 3.democracy. Also, Aristotle's political thinking is not separate from the ethical principles so he states that the government should be reflected in the true virtue that is "law" or the "golden mean". Born in Andalusia in 1126, Averroes (or Ibn Rushd) is generally considered one of the most influential Arabic classical philosophers, and his impact on Western thought, through the interpretations of Thomas Aquinas, Duns Scotus, and others, can hardly be overestimated. Although Averroes wrote extensively in the fields of religious law (Bidayat al-Mujtahid wa Nihayat al-Muqtasad), philosophy (The Incoherence of the Incoherence) and their relationship (Decisive Treatise), his nickname, the Great Commentator, is a result of Averroes’ prolific commentaries on Greek philosophy, and particularly the works of Aristotle. The date of completion of Averroes’ Long Commentary is, although debatable, usually given at around 1186 C.E., and while its chronological relationship to the Short and Middle Commentaries (and therefore status as Averroes’ ‘final opinion’ on the De Anima) is debatable, the Long Commentary certainly presents Averroes’ most detailed examination of the De Anima. In form, it is basically a line-by-line exegesis, with Averroes reproducing Aristotle’s work and then proceeding to provide explanation, extension, and interpretation. Averroes’ Long Commentary is key to tracing how Averroes interpreted Aristotle’s work on the soul and how his own concept of the soul developed from his reading of Aristotle. Louis Althusser and the End of Classical Russian Marxism: Spinoza, Hegel and the Critique of Dogmatic Marxism David Campbell Abstract: An attempt to restate Marx’s critical method in terms of Spinozist dogmatic epistemology was central to Louis Althusser’s conception of Marxist philosophy. Though it is no longer necessary to argue that this ‘restatement’ had almost no ground in Marx’s own thinking, it was a highly significant expression of the essence of dialectical materialism. Through discussion of Hegel’s critique of Spinoza, it will be argued that a democratically acceptable method of criticism of the mistaken beliefs of others, such as Marx developed in Capital, must take a resolutely anti-dogmatic approach which has the principle of winning subjective conviction at its core. Following his BA from Stanford University (1968) and Ph.D. from M.I.T. (1976), Scott held professorships at Yale (1976-1980) and Princeton (1980-204), before moving to USC in 2004. Scott’s numerous awards and fellowships include USC’s Albert S. Raubenheimer Award, a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foun- dation Fellowship, Princeton University’s Class of 1936 Bicentennial Preceptorship and a National Endowment for the Humanities Research Fellowship. His visiting positions include University of Washington, City University of New York and the Catholic Pontifical University of Peru. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2010. The interminable agony of metaphysics Throughout the twentieth century, numerous philosophers sounded the death knell of metaphysics. Ludwig Wittgenstein, Rudolf Carnap, Martin Heidegger, Gilbert Ryle, J. L. Austin, Jacques Derrida, Jürgen Habermas, Richard Rorty, and, henceforth, Hilary Putnam: a great many tutelary figures have extolled the rejection, the exceeding, the elimination, or the deconstruction of first philosophy. All these necrological chronicles do not have the same radiance, the same seriousness, nor the same motivations, but they all agree to dismiss the discipline, which in the past was considered “the queen of the sciences”, with a violence at times comparable to the prestige it commanded at the time of its impunity. Even today, certain philosophers hastily spread the tragic news with contempt for philosophical inquiry, as if its grave solemnity bestowed upon it some obviousness. Thus, Franco Volpi writes: ‘Grand metaphysics is dead!’ is the slogan which applies to the majority of contemporary philosophers, whether continentals or of analytic profession. They all treat metaphysics as a dead dog.1 In this way, the “path of modern thought” would declare itself vociferously “anti- metaphysical and finally post-metaphysical”. -

ASIANetwork Exchange | Fall 2014 | volume 22 | 1 Feng Youlan’s Interpretation of Western Philosophy: A Critical Examination from the Perspective of Metaphysical Methodology Derong Chen Abstract: This paper concentrates on Feng’s interpretation of Western philosophy from the perspective of metaphysical methodology and aims to display a limited observation of Feng’s interpretation of Western philosophy through the window of metaphysical methodology. Based on a brief review of the recent studies of Feng Youlan and Western philoso- phy, this paper analyzes the progress and insufficient aspects in current studies on this issue and particularly clarifies what are the metaphysics and metaphysical methods in the context of Feng Youlan’s philosophy. In clarifying Feng’s interpreta- tion of Western philosophy from the perspective of methodology, this paper further critically analyzes Feng’s positive metaphysical methods and negative metaphysical methods, and assumes that Feng’s negative metaphysical methods essentially is a kind of attitude towards metaphysics but neither a kind of metaphysics nor a kind of metaphysical methods. Instead of characterizing metaphysical methods as positive and negative as Feng did, this paper suggests an alternative division of metaphysical methods: direct and indirect methods of dealing with metaphysical issues. What specific forms did his interest take? How did his interest com- pare with the relative indifference of his philosophical contemporaries and near-contemporaries such as Spinoza and Locke? In this highly original book, Franklin Perkins examines Leibniz’s voluminous writ- ings on the subject and suggests that his interest was founded in his own philosophy: the nature of his metaphysical and theological views required him to take Chinese thought seriously. Leibniz was unusual in holding enlightened views about the intellectual profitability of cultural exchange, and in a broad-ranging discussion Perkins charts these views, their historical context, and their social and philosophical ramifications.
