History of Kamenny Brod and Its Faience Factory 1 History of Kamenny Brod and its Faience Factory Life and Death of a Jewish Shetel Filled with Life and Tragedy Valentine Slovatshevsky 12/31/2000 This story is history of the inhabitants of Kamenny Brod, Ukraine and its’ the Kamenny Brod faience factory. The town residents were made up of Jews, Poles, Germans and Ukrainians. This history covers the period from the mid-1800’s to year 2,000. Although the fiancé factory is the major theme; it is also the story of the 1919 pogrom and the 1941 holocaust that occurred in Kamenny Brod. This history is presented as a memorial to those that lived and died there and their descendants of Kamenny Brod. In the addendum is a newspaper article on the 80th anniversary written by the author wrote about the events of the1919 Pogrom. 2 ACKNOWLEGEMENT We wish to thank the author, Valentine Slovatshevsky, for this manuscript on the history of Kamenny Brod and his newspaper article. A kind and gentle person we met during our family tree quest. His manuscript is the history of Kamenny Brod and its fiancé factory. It describes an eye witness account of one of two other major tragic events that occurred in Kamenny Brod. In 1941German soldiers murdered the Jews of Kamenny Brod over a several day period. In the appendix is the English translation of the newspaper article Valentine wrote on the 80 anniversary of the pogrom. The article describes the pogrom in Kamenny Brod on the 80 th anniversary of tragedy in the history of the wooded settlement Kamenny Brod, in Baranovka area. There are many tragic pages but the pogrom on July, 9, 1919 has gone down in history as one of two most tragic experience of this small village, the other is the Holocaust starting in September1941. We want to acknowledge his widow, Anna Slovatshevskya, for allowing us to publish her husband’s manuscript. We met Anna, after she was widowed, when we visited Kamenny Brod in 2009. Anna gave us her copy of the manuscript that was written in Ukrainian. We had it translated into English after first retyping the Ukrainian copy into MS-Word in Ukrainian, then into English using MS-Word. These copies were sent to Anna in 2009 as well as a MS-Word DVD. I returned Anna’s original copy during the course of this year long project. It should be noted that Valentine was not a Jew; he became a friend through correspondence over several years. His story is of the factory history and does not focus on Shetel life. Special thanks are to the Sacramento, California Ukrainian Heritage Societies Ola Oliynyk who retyped the manuscript in MS-Word in Ukrainian. Then Ola found Ukrainian translators in the Ukraine, and coordinated all their translation efforts in MS-Word. Since there have been multiple people involved in this translation, it is far from perfect in grammar and translation of certain words or names. Formatting became a problem as various versions of MS-Word were used; no attempt was made to rationalize the discrepancies mentioned. This publication is produce, distributed, or transmitted in any form or by any means, or stored in a database or retrieval system to preserve a history of a small forest village with a tragic past.     © Lonely Planet Publications 98 www.lonelyplanet.com 99 Central Ukraine This region is known as the home of Ukraine’s famed black loam, the rich soil that puts the bread on the table in Ukraine – the ‘breadbasket of Europe’. But you’ll find more than just chornozem (black earth) in this region where Cossacks once roamed. Unbeknownst to many, CENTRAL UKRAINE the land known as Polissya, which lies largely between Kyiv and the Belarusian border to the north, is naturally forested, giving outdoorsy types ample chance to scale cliffs, pick berries, swing birches or sashay in the flowing waters of the region’s many rivers. One can imagine poets being equally content here. South of Kyiv the forests of Polissya yield to the vast flatlands of Podillya. Before WWII this region lay at the heart of the Jewish Pale of Settlement, birthplace of the Jewish shtetl (village). Catherine the Great established the Pale (demarcation line), which stretched north to Lithuania and west into Poland, in the late 18th century to remove Jews from Russia and mark the area in which they were allowed to live. Hasidism was founded in Podillya in the 17th century, and the region is peppered with tombs of Hasidic masters that draw scores of Jewish pilgrims. The Nazis obliterated practically every trace of central Ukraine’s Jewish culture, but the odd poignant reminder remains in the form of a decrepit Jewish cemetery, a forgotten mass burial site or the testimony of an aging eyewitness to the Nazi horror. The jewel of central Ukraine lies at the southern border of Podillya: Kamyanets-Podilsky, a granite ‘island’ in the sky surrounded by the natural moat of the Smotrych River.

    NEWSLETTER #7 18.12.2017 Innovations in decentralisation: the very first in Ukraine Mobile Administrative Service Centre was launched with support from U-LEAD with Europe Programme A Mobile ASC is a specially equipped vehicle with workstations for two administrators and room for three visitors. The Mobile ASC can provide 80 types of services for citizens of remote areas. Slavuta community in Khmelnytskyi oblast is U-LEAD’s pilot region for implementation of the “mobile” format of administrative service delivery. The Mobile ASC will visit the residents of remote towns and villages on a regular basis and run 5 routes covering 20 settlements during the course of a week. It will provide access to high quality services for more than 8,000 residents of the remote areas in Slavuta community, including pensioners and people with disabilities. The mobile ASC is equipped with the terminal for cashless payments and the revenues from the administrative services will be credited to the community budget. In case of pilot’s success in Slavuta, it will be replicated in other Ukrainian communities. The “U-LEAD with Europe” Programme’s team jointly with the Vice-Prime-Minister, Minister of Regional Development, Hennadii Zubko, presented the mobile ASC in Kyiv on December 4th at the 2nd All-Ukrainian Forum for amalgamated communities. The event was attended by the President, the Head of the Parliament, Prime-Minister and heads of the amalgamated communities. At the ceremony of the ASC opening in Slavuta (which took place on November 30th), the Ambassador of Sweden to Ukraine, Martin Hagström, and the Adviser on Decentralization of the EU Delegation to Ukraine, Benedikt Herrmann, highly praised the partnership between the community and Swedish and Ukrainian experts and its role in development of accessible, high quality administrative services and good governance in Ukraine.
