CEO NOTES HOMES & ESTATES MAGAZINE he parallels between real estate and art are easy to find. In the last few decades, real estate and art have become the preferred asset classes for today’s high-net-worth individuals. Like collectors, T they scour the globe for their next great find. How do they seek out their next investment? How do they determine the value of a Picasso painting or a prestigious address in San Francisco with no other comparable? With the help of trusted guides. The elite real estate specialists who are backed by Coldwell Banker Real Estate LLC and our luxury marketing program Coldwell Banker Previews International® have been helping high-net-worth individuals navigate the world of fine real estate since 1933. Our global presence is well established and growing, with over 3,000 independently owned and operated franchised broker offices in 43 countries. Our name is respected and recognized the world over. And as for our luxury real estate portfolio? We offer access to some of the most extraordinary properties available on the market today, including one of the top five most expensive estates in the United States: Palazzo di Amore in Beverly Hills, listed at $149 million.* There are thousands of collection-worthy homes represented in this magazine — and even more waiting to be uncovered at www.coldwellbankerpreviews.com. You may notice that our fall magazine has an arts theme. We chose it for the unique parallels to real estate I previously referenced. Our writers have interviewed a world-renowned classical pianist, as well as leaders from a highly anticipated new global museum and a high-end Italian manufacturer that has modernized an ancient art tradition. These stories remind us of the intangibles present in both the art and luxury real estate worlds. Value and beauty at this level are subjective, as many of our esteemed clients show us every day. The cover property in Great Neck, New York, aptly set on Gatsby Lane, is a prime example. As the homeowners reveal in the story, a good real estate investment often takes vision. We share that vision with you today. Cities like New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago have always exhibited strength at the high end and continue to do so this year. Yet, we are also beginning to see Houston, Dallas, Atlanta and Seattle show growth in million-dollar sales and listings as their luxury housing markets mature. When it comes to the ultra-luxury sector, eight-figure sales and listings have typically occurred along coastlines: California, Florida, New York, Hawaii. But even that is beginning to change. WAGENAAR’s Cyrano de Bergerac Overture BEETHOVEN’s Symphony No. 7 March 27, 2019 Yuja Wang will replace Maurizio Pollini, who has cancelled in order to fully recover from a brief illness, in the one-night-only performance of Schumann’s Piano Concerto with the New York Philharmonic led by Music Director Jaap van Zweden, Wednesday, March 27, 2019, at 7:30 p.m. The program will also include Johan Wagenaar’s Cyrano de Bergerac Overture and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7. The performance will mark Yuja Wang’s 24th with the New York Philharmonic; she most recently appeared with the Orchestra and Jaap van Zweden in February–March 2018, both in New York and on tour to Asia. She will return next season for performances of Shostakovich’s Concerto No. 1 for Piano, Trumpet, and Strings, June 11–13, 2020, also conducted by Jaap van Zweden and featuring Principal Trumpet Christopher Martin. The Boston Globe wrote of her performance of Schumann’s Piano Concerto last month with the Boston Symphony Orchestra: “Not just a vehicle for virtuosic fireworks, the concerto calls for a keen listening ear and attunement to the larger ensemble… Wang demonstrated all that in spades. Like an elite figure skater or gymnast, the athletic effort she expended was palpable, but if the physical feats took any toll, the audience never saw it.” Biographies Beijing-born pianist Yuja Wang is set to achieve new heights in critical superlatives and audience ovations during the 2018–19 season, through recitals, concert series, season residencies, and extensive tours with some of the world’s most venerated ensembles and conductors.

  • William and Mary Brickell Founders of Miami and Fort Lauderdale by Beth Brickell
book review By Patrick Scott William and Mary Brickell Founders of Miami and Fort Lauderdale by Beth Brickell For anyone who has wondered how two great cities, Miami and Fort Lauderdale, fi rst grew from a primeval wilderness, the answer is often given that Henry Flagler extended his railroad here from Saint Augustine. To the readers of local history who inquire further, “But how did a railroad magnate come to be interested in such an unsettled area in the fi rst place?,” the answer comes, “Julia Tuttle sent him fresh orange blossoms after the Central Florida crop was destroyed in a great winter freeze” in 1895. But for the real afi cionados of South Florida’s relatively short history, the Tuttle story turns out to be something of a myth. Both Miami and Fort Lauderdale actually owe their existence to a cranky Ohioan and his English wife who shunned publicity, lost all their papers in a storm and had no living descendants. Author Beth Brickell, pronounced Brick-ELL, is a Hollywood, Calif., producer and former journalist who fi rst encountered the BRICK-ell name while starring in a 1960s television program, Gentle Ben, fi lmed in Miami. Forty years later, she returned to uncover the long-buried story of the “First Family” of Miami. Ms. Brickell somehow got carried away with the depth of her research, contacting sources from Australia (where Charleston, SC: The William Brickell fi rst made his fortune) to California History Press, 2011. Acknowledgements, and Ohio. She ultimately wrote an entire book. introduction, photographs, maps, notes, bibliography, Though she is no relation to the subjects of her book, 126 pp.
