Plant Terminology
PLANT TERMINOLOGY Plant terminology for the identification of plants is a necessary evil in order to be more exact, to cut down on lengthy descriptions, and of course to use the more professional texts. I have tried to keep the terminology in the database fairly simple but there is no choice in using many descriptive terms. The following slides deal with the most commonly used terms (more specialized terms are given in family descriptions where needed). Professional texts vary from fairly friendly to down-right difficult in their use of terminology. Do not be dismayed if a plant or plant part does not seem to fit any given term, or that some terms seem to be vague or have more than one definition – that’s life. In addition this subject has deep historical roots and plant terminology has evolved with the science although some authors have not. There are many texts that define and illustrate plant terminology – I use Plant Identification Terminology, An illustrated Glossary by Harris and Harris (see CREDITS) and others. Most plant books have at least some terms defined. To really begin to appreciate the diversity of plants, a good text on plant systematics or Classification is a necessity. FRUITS: KINDS AND TERMS THE IMPORTANT PART OF THE LIFE CYCLE OFTEN IGNORED Technically, fruits are the mature ovaries of plants that contain ripe seeds ready for dispersal • Of the many kinds of fruits, there are three basic categories: • Dehiscent fruits that split open to shed their seeds, • Indehiscent dry fruits that retain their seeds and are often dispersed as though they were the seed, and • Indehiscent fleshy fruits that turn color and entice animals to eat them, meanwhile allowing the undigested seeds to pass from the animal’s gut We’ll start with dehiscent fruits. The most basic kind, the follicle, contains a single chamber and opens by one lengthwise slit. The columbine seed pods, three per flower, are follicles A mature columbine follicle Milkweed seed pods are also large follicles. Here the follicle hasn’t yet opened. Here is the milkweed follicle opened The legume is a similar seed pod except it opens by two longitudinal slits, one on either side of the fruit. Here you see seeds displayed from a typical legume. Legumes are only found in the pea family Fabaceae. On this fairy duster legume, you can see the two borders that will later split open. Redbud legumes are colorful before they dry and open Lupine legumes twist as they open, projecting the seeds away from the parent The bur clover modifies its legumes by coiling them and providing them with hooked barbs, only opening later as they dry out. The rattlepods or astragaluses modify their legumes by inflating them for wind dispersal, later opening to shed their seeds. -

Thailand Highlights 14th to 26th November 2019 (13 days) Trip Report Siamese Fireback by Forrest Rowland Trip report compiled by Tour Leader: Forrest Rowland Trip Report – RBL Thailand - Highlights 2019 2 Tour Summary Thailand has been known as a top tourist destination for quite some time. Foreigners and Ex-pats flock there for the beautiful scenery, great infrastructure, and delicious cuisine among other cultural aspects. For birders, it has recently caught up to big names like Borneo and Malaysia, in terms of respect for the avian delights it holds for visitors. Our twelve-day Highlights Tour to Thailand set out to sample a bit of the best of every major habitat type in the country, with a slight focus on the lush montane forests that hold most of the country’s specialty bird species. The tour began in Bangkok, a bustling metropolis of winding narrow roads, flyovers, towering apartment buildings, and seemingly endless people. Despite the density and throng of humanity, many of the participants on the tour were able to enjoy a Crested Goshawk flight by Forrest Rowland lovely day’s visit to the Grand Palace and historic center of Bangkok, including a fun boat ride passing by several temples. A few early arrivals also had time to bird some of the urban park settings, even picking up a species or two we did not see on the Main Tour. For most, the tour began in earnest on November 15th, with our day tour of the salt pans, mudflats, wetlands, and mangroves of the famed Pak Thale Shore bird Project, and Laem Phak Bia mangroves. -

I, I S S U E 15 FLORA OF THE WEEK Ficus virens Pakhad or Pilkhan Introduction : It is a medium sized tree which grows to a height of 23 to 28 metres in dry area and up to 30-32 metres tall in water area. In the Indian environment it has two marked growth periods: in spring (February to early May) and in monsoon rain (June to early September). It is a fig tree belonging to the group of trees known as strangler figs, because its seeds can germinate on other trees and grow to strangle and eventually kill the host tree. Morphology: Kingdom Plantae The genus Ficus falling within evergreen, semi-evergreen and deciduous species, which occupy almost any possible Order Rosales plant form, such as trees of large, medium and low growth, as well as shrubs, vines and climbers. On the Family Moraceae other hand, several species are epiphytes and other hemiepiphytes, while some are rheophytes and some other purely lithophytes. Amongst their undoubtedly distinct Genus Ficus place possess the „stranglers„ species. it initially grows on the branches of other trees from seed that have deposited frugivorous birds. From there it develops blastogenic Species virens roots that penetrate the soil. The aerial part of these roots becomes trunkish while at the same time continuing to develop blastogenic roots. Distribution: Ficus virens is found in India, Nepal, Uses: Pakistan, and South-east Asia through Malaysia, Africa, North America and Young shoots and young leaves - raw or cooked. -

Singapore is a highly urbanised city-state of approximately 710 km2 with a population of almost 5 million. While large, contiguous natural habitats are uncommon in Singapore, there remains a large pool of biodiversity to be found in its four Nature Reserves, 20 Nature Areas, its numerous parks, and other pockets of naturally vegetated areas. Traditionally, conservation in Singapore focused on terrestrial flora and fauna; recent emphasis has shifted to marine environments, showcased by the reversal of development works on a unique intertidal shore called Chek Jawa (Dec 2001), the legal protection of Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve (mangrove and mudflat habitats) and Labrador Nature Reserve (coastal habitat) in 2002, the adoption of a national biodiversity strategy (September 2009) and an integrated coastal management framework (November 2009). Singapore has also adopted the “City in a Garden” concept, a 10-year plan that aims to not only heighten the natural infrastructure of the city, but also to further engage and involve members of the public. The increasing trend of volunteerism, from various sectors of society, has made “citizen-science” an important component in many biodiversity conservation projects, particularly in the marine biodiversity-rich areas. Some of the key outputs from these so-called “3P” (people, public and private) initiatives include confirmation of 12 species of seagrasses in Singapore (out of the Indo-Pacific total of 23), observations of new records of coral reef fish species, long term trends on the state of coral reefs in one of the world's busiest ports, and the initiation of a Comprehensive Marine Biodiversity Survey project. -

Miq., extends over a period of 70-80 days and displays the same basic pattern reported by earlier workers. Developmental anatomical observations of the different components of the syconium are presented. Following pollination, structural changes of gall and seed flowers differ and the implications of some of these are considered. Since hairs occur at different stages of develop ment, speculations are presented on their role. In most instances, the anatomical changes could be related to wasp development and behaviour, thus highlighting the close mutualistic relationship that exists between figs and wasps.
