For more, please see page 4-6. SERVICE NEWSLETTER! This newsletter is for childcare providers working with children aged 0-13 years. The aim of the newsletter is to provide information about the Early Years Service, as well give providers a platform on which to share information, tips, and successes. A couple of sections we are really keen to promote are: The Spotlight We would like to hear about members of staff/colleagues etc., within the EYFS who you feel have done something you want to shout about! For example, maybe a colleague has just passed an exam? Had a baby? Reached a milestone birthday? If you have anything you want to shout about, please email David Brett (contact details on page 19). Sharing Tips Helpful Information - to share with other sites. For example, something that has worked well in your Setting, that you feel could benefit others? Champions - If a member of staff at your site is a champion for something, it would be great to know so we can share their contact details and allow them to help others. If anyone has anything they would like to shout about, please send details to [email protected] 3 The Early Years Team have been working on a project funded by the National Literacy Trust over the past year called ‘Helping Early Language and Literacy Outcomes’ (HELLO). Reading was one of the two Local Authorities, and eight Teaching Schools asked to trial a project to support Early Years practitioners in promoting young children’s communication, language and literacy development. Eleven Settings across Reading were chosen to take part. The project involved creating a working partnership between parents and settings, in order to develop the capacity within the settings to promote early communication, language, and literacy. The NLT tool that was developed and used as part of this project will be available to more settings in Reading as part of the next [Left to Right] Ita Mcgullion and Charmaine phase of the project. Hall—Kennet Day Nursery; The Right To celebrate the success of this project, the Worshipful the Mayor of Reading, Councillor Early Years Team held a celebration event. This Sarah Hacker celebration took take place on Thursday 5th May 2016 at The Avenue Centre, Tilehurst. Mayor Cllr Hacker also attended the celebrations, and presented the certificates and prizes to all the settings that took part in the HELLO project. The Early Years Team would like to thank all the settings that took part in the celebrations, and were involved in the project. I had not long finished my Forest School training and achieved my Level 3 Forest School Leader Award and thought that this land had potential. The nursery owners Simon and Jackie Brown assisted the flattening of the ground and had the area cleared to allow space for Forest School sessions to take place. Having gathered up equipment and resources we held a work shop for staff and parents to attend. Here they learnt more about the Forest School approach and were given opportunities to explore the forest and ask lots of questions. Having gained consent from the parents the children were put into groups and 6 sessions were planned. The Forest School approach demands that the outside space is not seen as merely a place where children go to burn off energy. The divide between indoors and outdoors is broken and children learn in and from nature. The experience is valued over the activity. Opportunities and risk taking are given. Risk is assessed and managed to create a safe working environment. We give the children the chance to discover own boundaries, strengths and weaknesses in a safe and non-judgemental environment. This is what we did on the first session: The children put on their outdoor waterproofs and seemed rather excited. They were showed how to enter the seating area and found somewhere to sit. To get them talking we went around the group one by one telling each other our name and favourite colour. We then went through the Forest School rules and played '1, 2, 3 where are you?' This is where when they are off playing I shout "1, 2, 3 where are you?" and they have to stop what they are doing wave and shout back "1, 2, 3 we're over here" and then they have to listen to the instruction they are given. For example, snack bar is open or come back to the circle. 7 They were then free to go and explore the outdoor environment. There were some dens/shelters already set up and a hammock. There were some digging tools available as we'll as interactive magnifying glasses and clipboards. If they found some bugs they wanted to share the news with their friends. The children were free to move logs, branches, sticks and any other things they found. There were logs and trees to climb up too as well as some slopes. If they wanted to read books about trees or bugs etc. they could. The children had plenty of opportunities to ask questions too. The children were encouraged to wash their hands and help themselves to some snack and a drink. During the session the children were asked to collect any objects they saw such as leaves and sticks. They then made a Forest School crown. At the end of the session they were asked to all come back and we reflected on the time they spent in the Forest. They all spoke about what they enjoyed doing and what they had found. The children seemed to really enjoy their first session and we're excited to go tell their parents and friends what they had done. Over the next few sessions they will be learning how to make dens by using different knots, learning how to use tools safely and how to light a fire safely. Celebrating Earth Day at Micklands Pre-School In celebration of Earth Day, Micklands Pre-School spent two weeks encouraging their children to think about the Earth, Nature and what they can do to help keep it safe and beautiful. The children spent time looking at globes and maps to inspire them to create their own Earth pictures. They went on a nature walk in their wooded area, where they made some tree rubbings and also made bird feeders to hang in the tree. The children had a wonderful time during a trip to the Milestone Centre in Caversham Park Village where they got the opportunity to experience recycling first hand. The story of Litter Bug Doug was also told to the children; he became a recycling super hero. 8 Tapestry and Poems at Crawshay Preschool Children at Crawshay Pre-School will have poems published in My First Poem in July, after successfully entering the My First Poem 2016 competition. On 20th April the children were excited to meet Aaron, Mike and Melinda from the Reading Tesco, Distribution centre. The children gave a demonstration of how they learn and play at Crawshay. Crawshay Pre-School also received a donation of £200 from Tesco as Aaron Steane; a previous parent of Crawshay Preschool, had nominated them into a charity fundraising event. The money was raised following a ‘Guess the Score’ for the England Vs Wales Six Nation Rugby game 2016, organised by the Tesco Reading Distribution Centre's Team. Amina Hussain, the Manager of Crawshay Pre-School, will use this money to fund a Tapestry project by purchasing at least two new tablets. These will be used by the staff and children to record their learning and developmental wow moments at preschool.

    VCH Oxfordshire • Texts in Progress • Caversham (August 2019) • © VCH Oxfordshire • Economic Hist. • p. 1 VCH Oxfordshire Texts in Progress Caversham Economic History Until the mid 19th century Caversham’s economy was based on mixed farming, woodland exploitation, and milling and other rural crafts, with neighbouring Reading providing a ready market from the Middle Ages onwards. From c.1850, as Reading expanded following the arrival of the railway, Caversham’s southern part developed larger-scale manufacturing, retail, and service businesses, as well as becoming a dormitory for working- and middle- class incomers employed in Reading itself. By 1908 such people made up around half of the parish’s total population. Industry declined in the mid 20th century, although a moderately successful retail and service sector continued in the early 21st. The Agricultural Landscape Like its neighbours the parish extended from the Thames into the Chiltern foothills, giving access to a typical mixture of meadows, open-field arable, closes, and coppice woods. Meadowland was concentrated on low-lying ground close to the river, while the main open fields, well established by the late 12th century1 and enclosed in the 1830s, surrounded Caversham and Lower Caversham immediately to the north.2 Amongst the larger fields were Hemdean, Balmer and West field, with Borough and Grove fields further east.3 The field name ‘Breach’ suggests medieval expansion of cultivation in the far south-east, although from c.1200 expansion north of there was restricted by the presence of a deer park.4 The somewhat less fertile central and northern parts of the parish were characterized by early enclosure,5 though still intermixed, in the 16th century, with numerous mainly small open fields, of which all except Lye field were enclosed before 1834.6 Medieval and later woodland was concentrated in the north and east, though much clearance had taken place by the 18th century.

The Parish consists of three churches: St Peter near the historic centre of Caversham, St John the Baptist in Lower Caversham, and St Margaret A rare unwelcome visitor to St Margaret’s Church in Mapledurham. There are approximately 20,000 parishioners. The geographical area covered comprises much of Caversham and also a large area of more rural land to the west and north, including the village of Mapledurham. There are two other neighbouring parishes taking in the rest of Caversham.

    VCH Oxfordshire • Texts in Progress • Caversham (August 2019) • © VCH Oxfordshire • Social Hist. • p. 1 VCH Oxfordshire Texts in Progress Caversham Social History Social Character and Communal Life Caversham’s population was long split between the main settlements of Caversham and Lower Caversham in the south (which had ready access to the trading and social opportunities offered by neighbouring Reading), and the small scattered hamlets and farmsteads of the parish’s central and northern parts. Manor houses in the south-east (latterly in Caversham Park) were intermittently occupied by high-status resident lords from the Middle Ages onwards, but landownership became increasingly divided, and by the 18th century the riverside settlements were relatively ‘open’, with strong outside links and (by the 19th century) marked religious Nonconformity. Major residential development in the late 19th and early 20th century turned Caversham, Lower Caversham and (later) Emmer Green into suburbs of Reading both socially and administratively, while the northern upland areas remained rural. The Middle Ages During the Middle Ages Caversham manor was held by a succession of leading aristocrats of mainly comital rank and above, including the earls of Pembroke and Warwick. William Marshal (1146/7--1219), regent of England from 1216, chose Caversham as one of his main residences, and his generous endowment of the shrine and chapel there may have been part of a larger investment in the manor house, which stood close to the Thames.1 William kept a huntsman at Caversham,2 and either maintained or created the deer park, which was stocked with ten does in 1223.3 Free warren (the right to small game) was enjoyed as ‘of old’.4 Later lords maintained the house, which saw sporadic royal visits from Henry III,5 Edward I,6 and Edward II.7 Caversham was one of Margaret de Lacy’s regular residences 1 Above, landownership; for chapel, below, relig.
