Avenged Sevenfold AVENGED SEVENFOLD PERSONIL: M.SHADOWS ( VOKAL ) SYNYSTER GATES ( GITAR ) ZACKY NENGEANCE ( GITAR ) JOHNY CARIST ( BASS ) THE REV ( DRAM ) DEAR GOD A lonely road, crossed another cold state line Miles away from those I love purpose hard to find While I recall all the words you spoke to me Can't help but wish that I was there Back where I'd love to be, oh yeah Dear God the only thing yo yeah I ask of you is to hold her when I'm not around when I'm much too far away We all need that person who can be true to you But I left her when I found her And now I wish I'd stayed 'Cause I'm lonely and I'm tired I'm missing you again oh no Once again There's nothing here for me on this barren road There's no one here while the city sleeps and all the shops are closed Can't help but think of the times I've had with you Pictures and some memories will have to help me through, oh yeah Dear God the only thing I ask of you is to hold her when I'm not around when I'm much too far away We all need that person who can be true to you I left her when I found her And now I wish I'd stayed 'Cause I'm lonely and I'm tired I'm missing you again oh no Once again Some search, never finding a way Before long, they waste away I found you, something told me to stay I gave in, to selfish ways And how I miss someone to hold when hope begins to fade... A lonely road, crossed another cold state line Miles away from those I love purpose hard to find Dear God the only thing I ask of you is to hold her when I'm not around when I'm much too far away We all need that person who can be true to you I left her when I found her And now I wish I'd stayed 'Cause I'm lonely and I'm tired I'm missing you again oh no 1 SEIZE THE DAY Seize the day or die regretting the time you lost It's empty and cold without you here, too many people to ache over I see my vision burn, I feel my memories fade with time But I'm too young to worry These streets we travel on will undergo our same lost past I found you here, now please just stay for a while I can move on with you around I hand you my mortal life, but will it be forever? I'd do anything for a smile, holding you 'til our time is done We both know the day will come, but I don't want to leave you I see my vision burn, I feel my memories fade with time But I'm too young to worry (a melody, a memory, or just one picture) Seize the day or die regretting the time you lost It's empty and cold without you here, too many people to ache over Newborn life replacing all of us, changing this fable we live in No longer needed here so where do we go? Will you take a journey tonight, follow me past the walls of death? But girl, what if there is no eternal life? I see my vision burn, I feel my memories fade with time But I'm too young to worry (a melody, a memory, or just one picture) Seize the day or die regretting the time you lost It's empty and cold without you here, too many people to ache over Trials in life, questions of us existing here, don't wanna die alone without you here Please tell me what we have is real So, what if I never hold you, yeah, or kiss your lips again? Woooaaah, so I never want to leave you and the memories for us to see I beg don't leave me Seize the day or die regretting the time you lost It's empty and cold without you here, too many people to ache over Trials in life, questions of us existing here, don't wanna die alone without you here Please tell me what we have is real (Silence you lost me, no chance for one more day) I stand here alone Falling away from you, no chance to get back home ALMOST EASY I feel insane every single time I'm asked to compromise Cause I'm afraid and stuck in my ways And that's the way it stays So how long did I expect love to outweigh ignorance? By that look on your face I may have forced the scale to tip I'm not insane, I'm not insane I'm not insane, I'm not - not insane (Mother) Come back to me, it's almost easy 2 (Said it all) Come back again, it's almost easy Shame pulses through my heart From the things I've done to you It's hard to face, but the fact remains That this is nothing new I left you bound and tied with suicidal memories Selfish beneath the skin But deep inside I'm not insane. I'm not insane, I'm not insane. I'm not insane, I'm not - not insane. (Mother) Come back to me, it's almost easy (Said it all) Come back again, it's almost easy (You'll learn your lesson) Come back to me, it's almost easy (But first you fall) Come back again, it's almost easy Now that I've lost you it kills me to say (Hurts to say) I've tried to hold on as you've slowly slipped away. I'm losing the fight. I've treated you so wrong, now let me make it right. (Make it all right) I'm not insane, I'm not insane. Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha I'm not insane, I'm not - not insane. (Mother) Come back to me, it's almost easy (Said it all) Come back again, it's almost easy (You'll learn your lesson) Come back to me, it's almost easy (But still you fall) Come back again, it's almost easy AFTERLEFE Like walking into a dream, so unlike what you've seen so unsure but it seems, 'cause we've been waiting for you Fallen into this place, just giving you a small taste of your afterlife here so stay, you'll be back here soon anyway I see a distant light, but girl this can't be right Such a surreal place to see so how did this come to be Arrived too early And when I think of all the places I just don't belong I've come to grips with life and realize this is going too far 3 I don't belong here, we gotta move on dear escape from this afterlife 'Cause this time I'm right to move on and on, far away from here A place of hope and no pain, perfect skies with no rain Can leave this place but refrain, 'cause we've been waiting for you Fallen into this place, just giving you a small taste of your afterlife here so stay, you'll be back here soon anyway This peace on earth's not right (with my back against the wall) No pain or sign of time (I'm much too young to fall) So out of place don't wanna stay, I feel wrong and that's my sign I've made up my mind Give me your hand but realize I just wanna say goodbye Please understand I have to leave and carry on my own life I don't belong here, I gotta move on dear escape from this afterlife 'Cause this time I'm right to move on and on, far away from here Got nothing against you and surely I'll miss you This place full of peace and light, and I'd hope you might take me back inside when the time is right Loved ones back home all crying 'cause they're already missing me I pray by the grace of God that there's somebody listening Give me a chance to be that person I wanna be (Who are you?; I am unbroken; I'm choking on this ecstasy) Oh Lord I'll try so hard but you gotta let go of me (Unbreak me, unchain me, I need another chance to live) I don't belong here, I gotta move on dear escape from this afterlife 'Cause this time I'm right to move on and on, far away from here Got nothing against you and surely I'll miss you This place full of peace and light, and I'd hope you might take me back inside when the time is right NIGHTMARE Nightmare!! Now your nightmare comes to life Dragged you down below down to the devil's show, To be his guest forever, Peace of mind is less than never Hate to twist your mind, but God ain't on your side An old acquaintance severed, Render of your last endeavor Ashes burning, you can smell it in the air, Cause men like you have such an easy soul to steal. So stand in line while banging numbers in your head, You're now a slave until the end of time And nothing stops the madness turning, haunting, yearning, pull the trigger! Chorus You should have known The price of evil, And it hurts to know that you belong here, yeah Ooooh, it's your f@#kin' nightmare While your nightmare comes to life 4 Can't wake up in sweat, cause it ain't over yet, Still dancing with your demons, Victim of your own creation beyond the will to fight, Where all that's wrong is right where hate don't need a reason Love is self-assassination You've been lied to just to rape you of your sight, And now they have the nerve to tell you how to feel.

  • Jack the Ripper: the Divided Self and the Alien Other in Late-Victorian Culture and Society
Jack the Ripper: The Divided Self and the Alien Other in Late-Victorian Culture and Society Michael Plater Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 18 July 2018 Faculty of Arts The University of Melbourne ii ABSTRACT This thesis examines late nineteenth-century public and media representations of the infamous “Jack the Ripper” murders of 1888. Focusing on two of the most popular theories of the day – Jack as exotic “alien” foreigner and Jack as divided British “gentleman” – it contends that these representations drew upon a series of emergent social and cultural anxieties in relation to notions of the “self” and the “other.” Examining the widespread contention that “no Englishman” could have committed the crimes, it explores late-Victorian conceptions of Englishness and documents the way in which the Ripper crimes represented a threat to these dominant notions of British identity and masculinity. In doing so, it argues that late-Victorian fears of the external, foreign “other” ultimately masked deeper anxieties relating to the hidden, unconscious, instinctual self and the “other within.” Moreover, it reveals how these psychological concerns were connected to emergent social anxieties regarding degeneration, atavism and the “beast in man.” As such, it evaluates the wider psychological and sociological impact of the case, arguing that the crimes revealed the deep sense of fracture, duality and instability that lay beneath the surface of late-Victorian English life, undermining and challenging dominant notions of progress, civilisation and social advancement. Situating the Ripper narrative within a broader framework of late-nineteenth century cultural uncertainty and crisis, it therefore argues that the crimes (and, more specifically, populist perceptions of these crimes) represented a key defining moment in British history, serving to condense and consolidate a whole series of late-Victorian fears in relation to selfhood and identity.

Lusty, “Rocking the Canon” LATCH, Vol. 6, 2013, pp. 101-138 ROCKING THE CANON: HEAVY METAL AND CLASSICAL LITERATURE By Heather L. Lusty University of Nevada, Las Vegas While metalheads around the world embrace the engaging storylines of their favorite songs, the influence of canonical literature on heavy metal musicians does not appear to have garnered much interest from the academic world. This essay considers a wide swath of canonical literature from the Bible through the Science Fiction/Fantasy trend of the 1960s and 70s and presents examples of ways in which musicians adapt historical events, myths, religious themes, and epics into their own contemporary art. I have constructed artificial categories under which to place various songs and albums, but many fit into (and may appear in) multiple categories. A few bands who heavily indulge in literary sources, like Rush and Styx, don’t quite make my own “heavy metal” category. Some bands that sit 101 Lusty, “Rocking the Canon” LATCH, Vol. 6, 2013, pp. 101-138 on the edge of rock/metal, like Scorpions and Buckcherry, do. Other examples, like Megadeth’s “Of Mice and Men,” Metallica’s “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” and Cradle of Filth’s “Nymphetamine” won’t feature at all, as the thematic inspiration is clear, but the textual connections tenuous.1 The categories constructed here are necessarily wide, but they allow for flexibility with the variety of approaches to literature and form. A segment devoted to the Bible as a source text has many pockets of variation not considered here (country music, Christian rock, Christian metal).

  • The Life & Rhymes of Jay-Z, an Historical Biography
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: THE LIFE & RHYMES OF JAY-Z, AN HISTORICAL BIOGRAPHY: 1969-2004 Omékongo Dibinga, Doctor of Philosophy, 2015 Dissertation directed by: Dr. Barbara Finkelstein, Professor Emerita, University of Maryland College of Education. Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the life and ideas of Jay-Z. It is an effort to illuminate the ways in which he managed the vicissitudes of life as they were inscribed in the political, economic cultural, social contexts and message systems of the worlds which he inhabited: the social ideas of class struggle, the fact of black youth disempowerment, educational disenfranchisement, entrepreneurial possibility, and the struggle of families to buffer their children from the horrors of life on the streets. Jay-Z was born into a society in flux in 1969. By the time Jay-Z reached his 20s, he saw the art form he came to love at the age of 9—hip hop— become a vehicle for upward mobility and the acquisition of great wealth through the sale of multiplatinum albums, massive record deal signings, and the omnipresence of hip-hop culture on radio and television. In short, Jay-Z lived at a time where, if he could survive his turbulent environment, he could take advantage of new terrains of possibility. This dissertation seeks to shed light on the life and development of Jay-Z during a time of great challenge and change in America and beyond. THE LIFE & RHYMES OF JAY-Z, AN HISTORICAL BIOGRAPHY: 1969-2004 An historical biography: 1969-2004 by Omékongo Dibinga Dissertation submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Maryland, College Park, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2015 Advisory Committee: Professor Barbara Finkelstein, Chair Professor Steve Klees Professor Robert Croninger Professor Derrick Alridge Professor Hoda Mahmoudi © Copyright by Omékongo Dibinga 2015 Acknowledgments I would first like to thank God for making life possible and bringing me to this point in my life.

  • Polyphonic Spree Hallelujah Time Everybod
A high school production of Jesus Christ Superstar or annual Branch Davidian jamboree? Polyphonic Spree Hallelujah Time Everybody has voices in their head. Little angels and devils telling us to sing nice gospel tracks about God and videotape yourself having sex with your underage "goddaughter." For Tim DeLaughter, it wasn't a voice so much as a sound. The sound he heard made about as much logical sense as "If you build it, they will come" but has had nearly as magical effect on those who've witnessed his musical equivalent of a baseball diamond in a cornfield. Like anyone who has had a song lodged in their head, no matter how much you like it, it becomes a nuisance after while—backseat driver to all the other things you'd rather think about. A soundtrack that fits on one side of a 45 and loops the last groove into itself. You'd do anything to get it out of your head. So, DeLaughter did something remarkable. He rounded up a posse, and gave birth to one of the more intriguing musical phenomena to hit the scene since Parliament. This is the story of a troupe of 24 choir-robed freaks called the Polyphonic Spree. You might have seen them on the MTV Video Music Awards, introduced by Marilyn Manson who claimed the band was the love child spawned by him and co-presenter Mandy Moore. Maybe the news clip about the mic that was mistaken for a pipe bomb and shut down a major airport. Perhaps you caught them when they opened for David Bowie on his recent tour.
