Off shore, Durban

A City of Many Facets

he Zulu name for the coastal city of Durban is ‘eThekwini’, translated as the place “where the earth and the ocean meet”. It is situated on the east coast of , on the shores of the Indian Ocean, and extends to Tthe Valley of 1000 Hills.

Durban has a mild, subtropical climate with sunshine for an average of 320 days a year. The year round sunshine and diverse natural environment makes Durban one of the country’s top holiday destinations, with pristine beaches, subtropical forests and game reserves in close proximity.

Durban offers a range of accommodation from beachfront hotels to lodges, guesthouses, self-catering apartments and B&Bs. There are a myriad of shopping malls, markets and street bazaars as well as restaurants, bars and music venues that stay open late into the night.

Durban has a busy harbour that handles much of the sub- continent’s international trade, and is South Africa’s second most important economic region after Gauteng, with well developed

industrial, commercial and financial sectors. Industries include automobile assembly, metalworking, machinery, textiles, iron and steel, chemicals, fertiliser, foodstuffs, agriculture and tourism.

With its excellent road, rail and communications infrastructure, the city of Durban was chosen by FIFA to host seven 2010 FIFA World Cup™ games, including a semi-final. The iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium was built especially for the event. The King Shaka International Airport, located north of Durban’s city centre, is a new facility that offers transit, accommodation, shops, restaurants and banks.

Durban and Surrounds The Durban Metropolitan area covers 2297km² (887miles²), stretching from the River in the south to in the north, and as far as in the west. It has a population of approximately 3.2 million people.

City Centre The historical heart of Durban is located in the city centre where the museums and City Hall can be found, as well as buildings that reflect the city’s colonial architectural heritage. The city centre is bordered to the west by the Indian district, where eastern foods, spices and other products can be found, to the south by the harbour, and to the east by miles of uninterrupted beaches.

North of the City As the city extends north alongside the Indian Ocean, there are holiday towns such as Umhlanga and , with beaches, restaurants and shopping districts, surrounded by rolling hills of sugar cane and indigenous bush.

Inland from the beach lies Inanda, one of Durban’s big, sprawling townships. It was in this township where Mahatma Gandhi spent his formative years, and where former president Nelson Mandela cast his vote in the country’s first democratic elections in 1994. Knowledgeable tour guides can offer insight into the community and its history.

South of the City The Bluff is an ancient sand dune that protects Durban harbour, and beyond it is the coastal town of , meaning “sweet waters” in Zulu, said to have been named by the Zulu King Shaka after tasting the fresh water that flowed from the river. The area is characterised by unspoilt beaches, nature reserves, shopping malls, restaurant districts and residential suburbs. It is a popular destination for scuba divers who come to explore Aliwal Shoal off Umkomaas, regarded as one of the top 10 dive sites in the world.

West of the City

A 30-minute drive inland from the city centre will bring you to the suburbs of , and Hillcrest. Just beyond Hillcrest is the Valley of 1000 Hills with its breathtaking views overlooking the deep river Zulu dancer, PheZulu, Valley of 1000 Hills valleys where people live in traditional African rural homesteads. The area has nature reserves and dams ideal for adventure activities, a traditional Zulu show village and a vibrant arts and crafts route.

KwaZulu-Natal Durban is the gateway to KwaZulu-Natal, one of the nine provinces of South Africa, which has a wealth of natural and historical sites to explore. It includes: • Two world heri- The Amphitheatre, Drakensberg tage sites: the iSimangaliso Wetland Park and the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park. • The oldest game reserve in Africa, the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve, which is home to the Big 5 (elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard). • The largest concentration of battlefields in South Africa situated on the plains of central and northern KwaZulu-Natal. • The North and South Coasts, endless beaches and coastal holiday towns. • The Midlands Meander, a world class arts and crafts route in the countryside.

urban’s people reflect a rich cultural diversity of African, Eastern and Western influences. When the first Europeans settled in Durban in the 1820s the Zulu people were already here. The Indian people were brought in in the 1880s as indenturedD labourers to work in the sugar cane fields, and were followed by traders and business people from the East. Today Durban is a cosmopolitan African city, home to people from all over the world but retaining that strong African-Indian-European colonial heritage.

Languages and Religion • The majority of people living in Durban speak Zulu as a first language. English is widely spoken and is the main language of business. A variety of other languages, including Zulu, , Hindi, Arabic, Gujurati and Xhosa are spoken. There is also a sizeable immigrant population in the city and you might encounter German, Greek, Italian, Portuguese and French. • The population is 68% Christian, 2% Muslim, 1.5% Hindu and about 28.5% indigenous beliefs and animist. Important Religious Places • The Jumma Musjid Mosque in town is the largest mosque in the southern hemisphere and can accommodate 5000 people. • Built in 1969, the Hare Krishna Temple of Understanding in Chatsworth is simply beautiful. Designed in the shape of a lotus plant, its spires, surrounding moat, pillars, murals and mirrors attract many visitors. • The Emmanuel Cathedral opened its doors in 1904 and finds itself amidst the hubbub of the inner city. The building is a landmark in Durban and was once a centre of intense political activity in the mid-1980s.

Woza eNanda Woza eNanda offers a township tour where you can meet local res- idents and visit some of Durban’s most important historical sites. • Ghandi’s Home: Mahatma Gandhi developed his philosophy of passive resistance at the Phoenix Settlement and his home has been turned into a monument dedicated to lasting peace and justice. • The Ohlange Institute: founded by John Dube (the first president of the African National Congress), is home to the site where Nelson Mandela cast his historic vote in South Africa’s first democratic elections in 1994. • Inanda Seminary: The active campus educates close to four hundred students amongst ten historic buildings, the oldest being Rev. Daniel Lindley’s mission house, built in 1858. Many of South Africa’s most powerful and influential women received their education at this school. • King Shaka Museum at KwaDukuza (Stanger): Displays and exhibits thoroughly document the history of the people of southern Africa, from iron-age farming communities to the rise of the Zulu nation and the rule of Shaka, the most famous Zulu king.

Shembe Festival The Shembe Church follows a mixture of Christian and Zulu cultural beliefs, and is well known for its festivals and ocean baptisms. • A Shembe religious ceremony is held in July at the Ebuhleni and Ekuphakameni Shembe settlements, a short distance from the city centre. • Thousands of devotees gather on the top of a mountain to participate in hypnotic, trance-like song and dance celebrations in full traditional regalia. At these events the followers of Shembe blow for hours on the haunting Shembe horn, the inspiration behind the now famous vuvuzela which is played by fans at football matches throughout South Africa.

Take a ride on a Rikshaw Rikshaws were introduced to Durban from the East in the early 1900s to serve as a tourist attraction and as a quick and easy means of transport around the growing city. Today, a fleet of these two-wheelers pulled by men with colourful outfits and outlandish headgear still operates on the Durban beachfront. Visitors can take a ride on a Rikshaw along the six kilometres of Durban’s beach- front.

Art Galleries Durban is home to a variety of art galleries that exhibit a mixture of contemporary art, traditional arts and craft as well as the work of celebrated South African artists.

KwaMuhle Museum Once the office of the notorious Department of Native Affairs, the KwaMuhle Museum provides a vital link with the city’s apartheid past. Inside the building are a number of powerful displays, which provide a fascinating insight into the life of South Africa’s then “second class citizens”. The displays deal with topics that challenge the onlooker to interpret their convictions, and to reassess their understanding of South Africa, past, present and future.

Architecture Durban has a diverse mix of architecture, including Victorian, Edwardian, Art Deco, Indian traditional and modern temple architecture. • Durban has one of the best selections of Art Deco buildings of any city in the world. • Notable buildings include the Durban City Hall, the Natal Playhouse, Bamboo Square, the Old Fort, the International Convention Centre and the Law Courts. • Visit the Monastery just beyond the city.

Further Afield Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve

For a true Big Five experience, visit the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve set in the heart of Zululand. The 96 000 ha game reserve is the oldest in Africa. iSimangaliso Wetland Park The iSimangaliso Wetland Park is a World Heritage Site. The 332 000 ha park contains three major lake systems, most of South Africa’s remaining swamp forests, Africa’s largest estuarine system, 526 bird species and 25 000-year-old coastal dunes.

The Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park The Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park is one of South Africa’s prime ecotourist destinations and a World Heritage Site. The 243 000 ha park is 200km in length. It is a landscape of towering sandstone cliffs, hidden valleys, indigenous forests and crystal clear rivers.

urban is one of the few cities in the world that offers world class surfing waves right on its doorstep. The piers create sandbars which consistently produce excellent beach-break waves. Other activities that can be enjoyed areD swimming, fishing, jet skiing, canoeing, windsurfing and kite surfing. Durban’s mild all-year-round climate and 19°C-24°C water temperature make it a summer AND winter holiday destination. • The beaches are all protected by shark nets and watched over by professional lifeguards. • The uninterrupted beach promenade stretches from uShaka Marine World near the harbour entrance to the Moses Mabhida Stadium. • Along the promenade there are restaurants, hotels and Suncoast Casino & Entertainment World, which has cinemas, restaurants and clubs. Hit the Coast! If you wish to escape the city for the day, the coastal towns Umhlanga and Umdloti to the north and the Bluff, Amanzimtoti and to the south offer beautiful, unspoiled beaches lined with cafés and restaurants, bringing the stretch of Durban Metro’s coastline to nearly 100km. KZN Sharks Board The KZN Sharks Board (KZNSB) in Umhlanga has a display hall with life-size replicas of sharks, fish and rays, and offers a 25-minute presentation on the work the KZNSB does and the importance of sharks in the marine ecosystem. You can also experience a 20-minute shark dissection.

The winter months bring the best diving. Scuba diving operators are situated in Umhlanga and Umkomaas. Aliwal Shoal is Durban’s prime diving destination. Dive boats launch from Umkomaas, south of Durban, to the 4km long reef lying some 5km offshore, with depths ranging from 5m to 35m.

Fishing Kayaks, or fishing skis as they are known in Durban, are the best craft for catching fish in the Indian Ocean. This form of angling is especially popular on the outer reefs off the coast of Umdloti.

Dolphin and whale watching The warm waters of the Indian Ocean are home to schools of bottlenose dolphins which move up and down the coast all year round. Humpback whales (and occasionally southern rights) can be seen off the coast from July to November. • You can view whales from high points along the coast and occasionally from the beach, whereas dolphins are often visible just beyond the waves. • A number of boat tours operate out of Durban, Umhlanga, Tongaat, Umdloti and Umkomaas, offering trips out to sea to observe these creatures up close.

Further Afield The North and South Coasts offer a wealth of small coastal towns with stunning beaches, bays and lagoons.

Sodwana Bay Sodwana Bay is another major diving destination just a few hours north of Durban, in the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. • Sodwana bay is home to a series of spectacular coral reefs with over a thousand species of fish, invertebrates and coral. • It is one of the most southern tropical reefs in the world and is famed for the shallowest sighting of a living “fossil”, the coelacanth.

Sardine Run An annual phenomenon which takes place along the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal coastline in June or July. • Gigantic shoals of sardines migrate along the coast from south to north, followed by sharks, dolphins, game fish and sea birds. The sardines are often driven to the shore where they beach by the thousand.

Gruelling Events • The Comrades Marathon, held in May or June, is the world’s oldest and largest ultra-marathon. It is a great spectators experience as thousands of runners take on the 90km (55 mile) race between Durban and Pietermaritzburg. • The Hansa Powerade Dusi Canoe Marathon, held in January every year, is a three-day endurance river race along the Msunduzi River from Pietermaritzburg to the mouth in Durban. • The MTN Amashova Durban Classic is a 106km cycle race between Pietermaritzburg and Durban.
