General Session and Meal Room Bios 4.18.13 Julie Anderson Julie Anderson oversees documentary limited series, occasional single documentaries as well as development of new programming ideas for THIRTEEN. She is also involved in fundraising, overseeing production and post-production, delivery and distribution, and coordinating broadcast and non-broadcast aspects of productions. In addition to AFRICAN AMERICANS: MANY RIVERS TO CROSS, Julie has been involved in MONEY & MEDICINE, QUEEN & COUNTRY, PIONEERS OF THIRTEEN, and ORCHESTRA OF EXILES. Anderson joined THIRTEEN in 2012 and brings more than 20 years of experience overseeing the development, production and promotion of non-fiction programming. Paula S. Apsell As director of the WGBH Science Unit and senior executive producer of PBS science series NOVA and NOVA SCIENCENOW, Paula Apsell has overseen the production of hundreds of acclaimed science documentaries. Under her leadership, NOVA continues to be the most watched primetime science series on American television and has won every major broadcasting award, including the Emmy, the Peabody and the Dupont-Columbia Gold Baton. Apsell has been recognized with numerous individual awards, including the New York Hall of Science’s Distinguished Service Award for Public Understanding of Science and the Carl Sagan Award given by the Council of Scientific Society Presidents. Billy Aronson Billy Aronson’s TV credits include scripts for Nickelodeon’s The Wonder Pets! (head writer first season), Upside Down Show, and Backyardigans, MTV’s Beavis and Butt-head, Cartoon Network’s Courage the Cowardly Dog, Sesame Workshop’s Bert and Ernie’s Great Adventures, Disney Channel’s Out of the Box and Johnny and the Sprites, and PBS’ Carmen Sandiego, Reading Rainbow and Postcards From Buster. His plays have been published in 5 volumes of Best American Short Plays, produced by Playwrights Horizons, Woolly Mammoth Theatre, Ensemble Studio Theatre, and named Best Original Script 2009 by the Bay Area Critics Circle. His writing for the musical theater includes the original concept/additional lyrics for the Broadway musical Rent. His non-fiction books for young readers include Scientific Goofs and They Came From DNA. Raney Aronson-Rath As deputy executive producer for PBS' flagship public affairs documentary series FRONTLINE, Raney Aronson-Rath guides the editorial development and execution of the series, from primetime television broadcasts to multiplatform initiatives. With Executive Producer David Fanning, she oversees all phases of production and runs the daily editorial management of the series, as well as FRONTLINE’s new monthly magazine program. Jeff Bieber Jeff Bieber is a Vice President and Executive Producer at WETA. Winner of national EMMY Awards, DuPont-Columbia, Peabody, and other honors, Bieber is currently in production on LATINO AMERICANS, a 6-hour television series, companion book, communications & engagement campaign; THE ITALIAN AMERICANS, a 4-hour series, book and engagement campaign; and WASHINGTON WEEK WITH GWEN IFILL. Past work includes AMERICA AT A CROSSROADS, a six-night primetime series; THE JEWISH AMERICANS, a six-hour documentary; and AVOIDING ARMAGEDDON, produced with Ted Turner Productions. Bieber has worked as a producer, director and writer on numerous award- winning documentaries, performance specials and breaking news programs. Adriana Bosch Adriana Bosch is an independent filmmaker who has written, directed and edited acclaimed political and social documentaries. For 20 years, she was a producer, writer and director at WGBH. Bosch's two-hour special Fidel Castro was honored with a Silver Hugo from the Chicago International Film Festival and was nominated for the Writers Guild Award. Most recently, Bosch was senior producer and producer/director of Latin Music U.S.A. and was producer, writer and director of Jimmy Carter, one of many biographies that she has produced for American Experience. She has won a Christopher Award, a Peabody Award, an Erik Barnouw Award and an Emmy Award. Marsha Bemko Executive producer Marsha Bemko’s television career spans 30 years. In addition to helming ten-time Emmy Award-nominated ANTIQUES ROADSHOW, Bemko was also executive producer of the two companion series, MARKET WARRIORS and ANTIQUES ROADSHOW FYI as well as author of the book Antiques Roadshow Behind the Scenes. Prior to joining ROADSHOW as senior producer in 1999, Bemko worked on a variety of WGBH-produced public affairs programs including CULTURE SHOCK, DISCOVERING WOMEN, and in a variety of production capacities for FRONTLINE. Steven J. Boettcher Steven J. Boettcher is a five-time Emmy-winning filmmaker. He produced and directed the PBS documentaries THE GOLD RUSH, THE OREGON TRAIL and PIONEERS OF PRIMETIME. Boettcher has also produced pieces for a wide variety of networks and syndicated programs. Since 2004, he has focused his energy on the production of PBS’ PIONEERS OF TELEVISION---building a strong relationship with the Hollywood community, including the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Boettcher is currently in production of season 4 of PIONEERS OF TELEVISION. Stephen Burns Steve Burns is Executive Producer/Consultant for WNET’s SECRETS OF THE DEAD. He is also Managing Director for Roller Coaster Road Productions, a media company producing programs for networks and the web worldwide. His career spans more than 25 years in senior executive positions at Discovery Networks and most recently at National Geographic Channel as EVP of Global Content for NGC worldwide. While at Discovery Networks, Burns served as EVP and Chief Science Editor, responsible for nearly 2,000 hours of programming per year across 10 Discovery nets. From 2003 to 2005, Burns was SVP and General Manager of The Science Channel. He has won multiple industry awards, including two Emmys. Joe Campbell Joseph A. Campbell, III (Joe) has spent over 30 years in public television. He began his career at WGTE- TV in Toledo Ohio, starting as a Production Assistant and rising to Director of Broadcasting. In 1995 he accepted a position as Program Manager at KAET, Phoenix, Arizona and in 2005 Campbell became Program Director for WLIW, New York, NY. He was instrumental in creating the “PEP” program, a series of program offerings for on-air fundraising designed to supplement the programs provided by PBS. In 2008 he became Vice President, Fundraising Programming at PBS. Campbell is charged with commissioning and acquiring programming for use during member station on-air fundraising campaigns Laurie Donnelly Laurie Donnelly is currently in production with the new prime-time PBS series, SACRED JOURNEYS with Bruce Feiler, and a travel/cooking series, MOVEABLE FEAST WITH FINE COOKING. As the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning Executive Producer in charge of WGBH Lifestyle Programming and Special Projects, Donnelly has guided content and provided invaluable direction for some of public television’s most-loved lifestyle programs, including SIMPLY MING, ROUGH CUT WOODWORKING WITH TOMMY MAC, BROADWAY OR BUST, THE VICTORY GARDEN, GOURMET'S DIARY OF A FOODIE, FOOD TRIP WITH TODD ENGLISH and most recently IN THE MIND OF A CHEF (narrated by Anthony Bourdain). Rebecca Eaton Named one of TIME Magazine’s Most Influential People of 2011, Rebecca Eaton took over the helm of MASTERPIECE THEATRE and MYSTERY! in 1985, and oversaw the highly successful launch of the new MASTERPIECE in 2008. With hit programs such as SHERLOCK and DOWNTON ABBEY, the revamped series has drawn a new generation of drama fans, and at the same time increased the size of the series’ core audience. Eaton has accrued a bookcase of accolades, including 42 Primetime Emmy Awards, 17 Peabody Awards, two Golden Globes and two Academy Award nominations. Bill Gardner Bill Gardner oversees the acquisition, development and production of historical, cultural, current and world events, natural history and science programming for the PBS Primetime schedule. Before joining PBS, he was executive producer at Discovery Studios, where he oversaw national productions including Animal Planet’s PUPPY BOWL and served as show runner on Science Channel’s HUMAN NATURE WITH DAN RISKIN. Prior to that, he spent over a decade in the independent production world and produced in over 30 countries, including spending two months embedded with US Special Forces investigating the looting of the Baghdad museum. Stephen Gong Stephen Gong has served as the Executive Director of the Center for Asian American Media (CAAM) since June 2006 after many years as the General Manager of the Pacific Film Archive, and Deputy Director of the Berkeley Art Museum at the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to that he has been a program officer at the National Endowment for the Arts, the Associate Director of the National Center for Film and Video Preservation at the American Film Institute, and a lecturer in the Asian American Studies program at UC Berkeley. Beth Hoppe As Chief Programming Executive and General Manager of General Audience Programming, Beth Hoppe oversees all PBS general audience primetime programming, fundraising programming and PBS Plus. She is responsible for creating and implementing PBS’ primetime content strategy, building on PBS’ series and commissioning new programming working with producers, partners and funding sources. Prior to this role, she served as PBS Vice President of Programming, overseeing all science, history and natural history programming. She spent several years on the commercial side as President and CEO of Optomen Productions
