JAMAICA CAMPUS ORDER OF ACADEMIC PROCESSION

Grand Marshal The Colors of the The University Colors

Schools and Colleges Graduate School School of Law College of Arts and Sciences School of Education School of Commerce College of Pharmacy

Marshal of Faculties Faculties of the University THE COAT OF ARMS OF ST. JOHN'S UNIVERSITY Alumni Representatives

The Coat of Arms of St. John's University embodies all that is her heritage. The book, a symbol of learning, at the junction of the members Corporation Marshal of the cross proposes the thought that Christ is the center and model of Board of Trustees education. The words "Ecce Agnus" are the beautiful testimony of St. Deans of the University John the Baptist to the Divinity of Christ "Behold the Lamb of God". The heart is the symbol of charity of St. Vincent de Paul, founder of the Honorary Degree Recipients Vincentian Fathers. The f leur de lis is the well known cognizance of Officers of the Baccalaureate Mass France, birthplace of St. Vincent, and as the French form of the lily has a The Very Reverend President distinct Marian significance. It appropriately notes the Consecration of The University to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. The escallop shell, the His Excellency, The Most Reverend ancient symbol for the Sacrament of Baptism also commemorates the Indian Bishop of Brooklyn name for Long Island, the community which the University serves, and the titular of the Pro-Cathedral of the of Brooklyn, in which the University is located. The motto Educatio Christiana Animae Perfectio, translated "Christian Education per£ects the soul" is one of the significant notes of the Encyclical of Pius XI on the Christian Education of Youth.

The principal tinctures of the shield are blue and red respectively, the liturgical colors of the Blessed Virgin and the Humanity of her Divine Son. The latter color and white ( represented by silver in Heraldry) indicate the traditional colors of the University. We are hungry College ( Sacred Science) Manhattan College (Sacred Science) for beauty, but where charity is lacking nothing else is of any avail." We are confident that the social problems of Kings Francis Thomas Meyer, B.A., St. John's University ton, Jamaica, have been ameliorated because of the charity of Joseph Elias Issa. Educated at St. George's College, Kings ( Sacred Science) ton, and at the College of the Holy Cross, Worcester, he embarked upon a very successful business career, so that today he is a director of several outstanding organizations in Jamaica. More significant, however, is his active participation in a number of philanthropic activities: he is President of the Particular Council of St. Vincent de Paul Society; Member of the Issa Scholarship Selection Committee, of the Finance Committee of Boy's Town, and on the Board of Governors of the Institute of Jamaica respectively; since 194-1 he has been Vice President of the Jamaica Save the Children Fund. "Silver and gold are not the only coin; virtue also passes current all over the world." St. John's University in America is happy to acknowledge the wisdom of these words by conferring honoris causa the degree of Doctor of Commercial Science upon Joseph Elias Issa, who by his edifying expenditure of charity receives, in exchange, not only his own abiding content ment but also our cordial acclaim.

HENRY J. LATHAM Doctor of Laws "A wise man," wrote Bacon, "will make more opportunities than he finds." Fortunately for us the existing ones suffice. In the field of education, for instance, how fruitful are the opportunities for professional education available in our evening schools! Those who take advantage of such opportunities are to be commended for their preceptiveness, per severance, and intellectual energy. Exemplifying these qualities is Henry J. Latham, who completed his preprofessional and professional education in the evening: he studied pre-law at St. John's University and obtained two law degrees-the LL.B. and LL.M.-at Brooklyn Law School of St. Lawrence University. For more than twenty-five years thereafter he has practiced law and gained a broad experience in all fields of law. In l 94-0 he was elected a member of the State Legislature, a position he left to enlist in the U. S. Navy during World War II. While still serving overseas, he was elected to Congress in l 94-4-, and was reelected for a total of seven terms. This fact alone is ample evidence of his effective and conscientious performance of duty. As further testimony to his ability, proven character, and the high regard he inspires, he was elected in 1958 a Justice of the Supreme Court on a bi-partisan slate. Esteemed American, congressman, and jurist, Henry J. Latham merits honoris causa the degree of Doctor of Laws, because he illustrates the achievement of one who, in passing through life's pilgrimage, has converted •.. the common dust of servile opportunity to gold.

NORMANN. NEWHOUSE Doctor of H1,mane Letters "Were it left to me," wrote Thomas Jefferson, "to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter." These words clearly suggest the enormous good potential in the press, a good realizable only through an editor who is a man of ability, courage, and integrity as in the case of Norman N. Newhouse. Born in New Jersey, he received his A.B. from New York University and has been editor of the Long Island Daily Press since l 936, a tenure interrupted only by his service in the U. S. Army during World War II. For his military achievement he was awarded the Legion of Merit and the Conspicuous Service Cross. Dedicated to public service, he has fought for improved public facilities for Long Island and the correction of abuses threatening to deprive the community of its just needs or to injure the citizens. In one of its most important campaigns, 1: he Press, over a period of ten years, succeeded in alleviating the problem of congested court calendars by winning addi tional courts and justices. With equal conviction it has exposed crime, corruption, racketeering, and other evils corrected by legislation or prosecution. For its success The Press has received three national awards from the National Education Writers Association, two Front Page Awards of the New York Newspaper Guild, and others far too numerous to mention. Such devotion to community welfare and dedication to the ideals of American journalism prompt St. John's University to confer honoris causa the degree of Doctor of Humane Letters upon Norman N. Newhouse.

JOHN J. SMITH Doctor of Commercial Science In accounting for the obligations of the corporate citizen, the author of Big Business and Free Men states, "No business is an island, and the business system and the individual enterprise owe their character to the society in which they ~ave their being, and their future is intimately bound up with the future of that society." An exemplar of this philosophy 1s John J. Smith, who has been perennially aware that "the businessman must give cognizance to many affairs not traditionally considered matters of business concern." Born in Brooklyn, he was educated in the elementary and high schools of t.li.e City of New York and the Columbia School of Journalism. After serving in the U. S. Army during the first World War, CITATION FOR PRESIDENT'S MEDAL he entered the banking business in 1919. He is today President of the East New York Savings Bank and of the Arlington Village Development Corporation. Ever mindful of his social responsibility, he has given inspiring leadership to such WILLIAM A. GILLARD activities as the New York Public Library, the American Red Cross, the Board of Regents of the Long Island College Hospital, Catholic Charities of Brooklyn, and the Council of St. John's University. Because of his professional achieve Gentlemanly, affable, scholarly, and complaisant, he represents everything suggested by the poet's words: ment and contribution to community well-being, he exemplifies the ideal of the corporate citizen. St. John's University The love of learning, the sequestered nooks, is indeed honored to bestow honoris cawa the degree of Doctor of Commercial Science on John J. Smith. And all the sweet serenity of books. In addition to these laudable personal qualities, he has manifested exemplary loyalty, dedication, and the capacity to grow MOST REVEREND EGIDIO VAGNOZZI, ]).D. with the University. Born in Pennsylvania, he received an A.B. from St. Thomas College; an LL.B. from St. John's Doctor of Laws University, School of Law; and a B.S. in Library Science from Columbia University. This excellent training he has devoted, magnanimously and efficiently, to St. John's University in many capacities. Among these may be mentioned In Suaviter in modo, fortiter in re: modestly but resolutely he has distinguished himself as a Papal envoy. Shortly after structor in French, Assistant Librarian, Librarian, of Library Science, Chairman of Department, and Director of his appointment as the new Apostolic Delegate to the United States, he told Pope John XXIII, with characteristic humility, Libraries. Outside the University his ability and efficacy have been duly recognized: he has served as chairman of the that he was "a little bit afraid at his prospect of going to such a big job." Laughingly the Pope retorted, "You are afraid NCEA Library Commission; for the Catholic Library Association he has been chairman of the University and College of your big job. What about mer" Actually he came well equipped for his task of being the Pope's eyes, ears, and heart section, member of the Executive Committee, and incumbent chairman of Constitutions and By-Laws Committee. To his new post he has also brought a rich humanity, indefatigable energy, missionary zeal, and the invaluable experience of thirty years' service in the Vatican diplomatic corps. A "realistic, tough-minded thinker," he has been hailed by Vice-President Nixon as "one of the few men in the world today who can qualify as an expert on the problem of Asia." His Holiness has un HONORARY DEGREES CONFERRED doubtedly selected the right man for the "big job" of being "the proper link between the and American Catho DURING THE YEAR lics." We are indeed fortunate, for the religious and spiritual condition of the Church in America will be considerably enhanced because of the efforts of this experienced and dedicated prelate. WILLIAM H. WALTERS The Honorable Victor Andres Bela{mde, Doctor of Laws Doctor of Commercial Science General Faculty Meeting-November 7, 1959 According to Plato, "There are many arts among men, the knowledge of which is acquired bit by bit by experience, for it is experience that causeth our life to move forward by the skill we acquire, while want of experience subjects us to the Reverend Thomas V. Cahill, C.M., Doctor of Humane Letters effect of change." With the benefit of only parochial school education, William H. Walters, native of Brooklyn caused St. Vincent de Paul Lecture-December 1, 1959 his business life to move forward by the skill and experience gained over the years. In 1918 he started to work as an appren tice pressman for the U. S. Dodd, Doctor of Laws operating under the name of Diamond National Corporation. Highly successful and respected as a business leader, he has also participated actively in behalf of community welfare. Such altruism has motivated grateful recognition; for he is Freedom Institute Convocation-May 14, 1960 an affiliated Brother of the Christian Schools, Knight of Malta, and Knight with Grand Cross of the Holy Sepulchre. It is our great honor to hail the industry and accomplishment of William H. Walters, who merits Jionoris cawa the degree of The Honorable Owen McGivern, Doctor of Laws Doctor of Commercial Science. St. Vincent de Paul Lecture-December 1, 1959

WILLIAM J. WEARY Very Reverend John F. Zimmerman, C.M., Doctor of Laws Doctor of Commercial Science St. Vincent de Paul Lecture-December 1, 1959 In 1927 he enrolled in the evening division of the School of Commerce, St. John's University, from which he received his B.B.A. From 1930-35 he served as Registrar and Vice Dean respectively of his Alma Mater. Appointed Dean in 1935, he has capably guided the destiny of the school through the difficult period of its emergence, the trying years of World War II, the post-war boom, the threatening Korean police action stage, and the expansion program of the University, which witnessed the extension of the School of Commerce at the Jamaica campus and in September 1960 will see the in auguration of the Graduate Division of the School of Commerce. Twenty-five years as Dean, even under normal circum stances, represent twenty-five years of severe administrative challenges; but, in the case of a new school involving a relatively new area of collegiate education, the challenges are doubled. That he has solved the multitudinous problems that have come his way attests to his extraordinary administrative skill. His ability has not gone unnoticed, for in 1958-59 he served as President, Middle Atlantic Association of Collegiate Schools of Business, and is currently a member of its Executive Committee. It is indeed a grateful St. John's that bestows honoris causa the degree of Doctor of Commercial Science upon !)ea1: William J. Weary, who is retiring after many years of dedicated service. That this severance be not a terminal point m his career but the inception of a new one is our earnest exhortation: For age is opportunity no less Than youth itself, though in another dress. And as the evening twilight fades away The sky is filled with stars, invisible by day. The caps, gowns, and hoods worn at college and university functions date back to the Middle Ages. Monks and students of those days wore them to keep warm in the damp and drafty 12th century castles and halls of learning.

The gown for the bachelor's degree has a semi-stiff yoke, long pleated front, and GRAND MARSHAL intricate shirring across the shoulders and back. It is primarily distinquished by its long CHARLES J.
