Native Orchids in Southeast Alaska Marlin Bowles & Bob Armstrong 2019 Preface Southeast Alaska's rainforests, peatlands and alpine habitats support a wide variety of plant life. The composition of this vegetation is strongly influenced by patterns of plant distribution and geographical factors. For example, the ranges of some Asian plant species extend into Southeast Alaska by way of the Aleutian Islands; other species extend northward into this region along the Pacific coast or southward from central Alaska. Included in Southeast Alaska's vegetation are at least 27 native orchid species and varieties whose collective ranges extend from Mexico north to beyond the Arctic Circle, and from North America to northern Europe and Asia. These orchids survive in a delicate ecological balance, requiring specific insect pollinators for seed production, and mycorrhizal fungi that provide nutrients essential for seedling growth and survival of adult plants. These complex relationships can lead to vulnerability to human impacts. Orchids also tend to transplant poorly and typically perish without their fungal partners. They are best left to survive as important components of biodiversity as well as resources for our enjoyment. Our goal is to provide a useful description of Southeast Alaska's native orchids for readers who share enthusiasm for the natural environment and desire to learn more about our native orchids. This book addresses each of the native orchids found in the area of Southeast Alaska extending from Yakutat and the Yukon border south to Ketchikan and the British Columbia border. For each species, we include a brief description of its distribution, habitat, size, mode of reproduction, and pollination biology. -

There has been much recent investigation and re-interpretation of evidence regarding the upper-level taxonomy of the Liliales, with strong suggestions that the broad Liliaceae recognized by Cronquist (1981) is artificial and polyphyletic. Cronquist (1993) himself concurs, at least to a degree: "we still await a comprehensive reorganization of the lilies into several families more comparable to other recognized families of angiosperms." Dahlgren & Clifford (1982) and Dahlgren, Clifford, & Yeo (1985) synthesized an early phase in the modern revolution of monocot taxonomy. Since then, additional research, especially molecular (Duvall et al. 1993, Chase et al. 1993, Bogler & Simpson 1995, and many others), has strongly validated the general lines (and many details) of Dahlgren's arrangement. The most recent synthesis (Kubitzki 1998a) is followed as the basis for familial and generic taxonomy of the lilies and their relatives (see summary below). References: Angiosperm Phylogeny Group (1998, 2003); Tamura in Kubitzki (1998a). Our “liliaceous” genera (members of orders placed in the Lilianae) are therefore divided as shown below, largely following Kubitzki (1998a) and some more recent molecular analyses. Leadville National Fish Hatchery All Species Hunt Plan I. Introduction National Fish Hatcheries are guided by the mission and goals of the National Fish Hatchery System (NFH); the purposes of an individual hatchery; U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) policy, laws and international treaties. The Leadville National Fish Hatchery resides on 3,072 acres in Lake County, Colorado. The Hatchery was created by Executive Order of President Benjamin Harrison in 1889 for the purpose of restoring depleted stocks of trout in the Upper Arkansas Region of Colorado, the Black hills of South Dakota, and Nebraska. At that time the main water supply for the hatchery was from Rock Creek. To protect the hatchery’s water supply, most of the Rock Creek drainage was included in the 3,072 acre hatchery land base. Leadville National Fish Hatchery is the second oldest federally operated fish hatchery in existence today and is one of the oldest surviving tangible examples of the historic legacy upon which the Service was first established. The hatchery is located in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado approximately six miles southwest of the city of Leadville. -

Biologica Nyssana, 7 (2), December 2016: 107-112. Muntele Mic Mountain is located in the southwestern part of Romania and belongs to the Southern Carpathians. Although relatively small, Muntele Mic contains most of typical mountain and high-mountain habitats. The field research regarding the orchid’s family in the Muntele Mic area, have started in the summer of 2009. Owing to easy access (asphalt road that goes to the tourist center of Muntele Mic), although it is classified as part of the European Natura 2000 network (ROSCI0126 Munţii Ţarcu), the area is influenced by negative anthropogenic factors. Although considered to be a very anthropized area, the field research concluded that there are 10 species of orchids growing in this location, of which three: Gymnadenia frivaldii Hampe ex Griseb., Dactylorhiza fuchsii (Druce) Soó and Dactylorhiza saccifera (Brongn.) Soó), were not mentioned in the literature data. The CDT traverses 800 miles of these majestic and challenging peaks dotted with abandoned homesteads and ghost towns, and crosses the ancestral lands of the Ute, Eastern Shoshone, and Cheyenne peoples. Program www.mass.gov/nhesp State Status: Endangered Massachusetts Division of Fisheries & Wildlife Federal Status: None DESCRIPTION: Dwarf Rattlesnake-plantain is a small white orchid (family Orchidaceae) of shady conifer or mixed hardwood-conifer forests. The striking dark green leaves, which are variegated with white or pale green markings along the veins, are much more conspicuous than the small white flowers. The leaves are evergreen, oval-shaped, about 2.5 cm (1 inch) long, and arranged in a dense basal rosette. The flower stalks are leafless, grow singly from the centers of the rosettes, and are usually about 15 cm (6 inches) tall. Numerous small flowers about 4 mm long are arranged in a loose spiral around the stem but are typically twisted to the side such that on most plants the spikes of flowers appear one-sided. Plants spread by underground horizontal stems and are often found growing in small clonal patches of several plants. AIDS TO IDENTIFICATION: Identification of Dwarf Rattlesnake-plantain requires the evaluation of several characters, and careful, precise measurements. Plants with the following characteristics can be identified as Dwarf Rattlesnake-plantain with a high degree of confidence, but some plants will fall somewhat outside Dwarf Rattlesnake-plantain showing the evergreen leaves patterned these conservative specifications and will need further around the midvein and the leafless flower stalk with a one-sided appearing loose spiral of flowers.
