Jesus' words are so important for all to hear. In the fast-paced, noisy, world of ours, we so desperately need quiet, silence, rest and reflection, all of which are special elements which give place to meaningful prayer and spiritual health. Although annual vacations are important, even they can be noisy, frenetic, and distracting. As such, we must jealously make provisions to attend to our interior equilibrium. We desperately need quiet time, relaxation, time for meditation and reflection on the ultimate meaning of our lives. Sometimes, we may even find a formal retreat, perhaps a private, guided or directed retreat to be exactly the "deserted" place of which our Lord speaks. A spiritual vacation may renew and refresh us in more ways than we can currently imagine.

When I entered the seminary back in 1981, I began the custom of an annual spiritual retreat. Yes, during the seminary years it was easy to schedule. It was already a programmed required element of my priestly formation. But, after ordination, the responsibility fell to me, as a priest, to be sure that I attended to my spiritual health and wellbeing. Going somewhere different, getting away, discovering God in a new context, resting and praying more deeply, was always renewing, calming, and re-directing in the best sense of the word. No matter what our Christian vocation happens to be, a retreat, yes a spiritual vacation with the Lord, should be on our bucket list. You might be surprised at what a blessing it can be!

I have been on private silent retreats to like in Conyers, Gethsemane in Kentucky, Mepkin Abbey in South Carolina, Saint 's in Massachusetts, Westin Priory in Vermont and the Franciscan Spirituality Center in New Mexico. I have also been on guided group retreats to in New York and the Jesuit Spirituality Center in Grand Coteau, Louisiana. And I have been on many individually directed Ignatian retreats, under the spiritual direction of numerous Jesuit at places like Manresa in Atlanta, Jesuit Renewal Center in Cincinnati, and the House of Prayer for Priests in Orange, California. Of late, archdiocesan priests annually attend guided retreats in Palm Beach County.

So many spiritual insights to gain. So much of life and ministry to process. So many prayers of thanksgiving to offer. We all need to take time to go away by ourselves "to a deserted place and rest a while." You will never regret an investment in your spiritual life, an activity which is designed to bring equilibrium, harmony, integration, and renewal to your soul. Vacations are nice. We all love them. We all need them. But don't forget a vacation with the Lord, who has made it all possible!

Here at the parish, we have local retreat experiences that are, in their own way, particularly helpful to our spiritual lives as well. Our faculty and staff days of recollection, student days of prayer, like Jesus’ Day, the Men's and Women's Emmaus retreat program, even our pilgrimage ministry, both local and international options. All help us on the journey of life and faith.

The calming, soothing balm of the Lord. The spiritual discoveries that are made through meditation. The long overdue conversations with our Heavenly Father. Hearts and souls made new. These are but a few of the benefits of a spiritual vacation with the Lord. Why not? How else can we so concretely allow Jesus to be the Good Shepherd of our lives? A formal retreat, complimented by a personal prayer routine, make the ground fertile for the action of God. Give him space. Give him room to touch, mold, and love you more deeply. Peace, quiet, rest, and renewal. Wonderful goals! Gifts for our souls!

Summer Staff Vacations

As we journey through the weeks of summer, numerous members of the parish staff (including the priests) will be taking periods of vacation days for rest and renewal. During mid to late August, Father Pham will be away. During late July and early August, Father Davis will be away for his annual vacation. In Father Davis’s absence, the parish will be well-served by Father Eliseus, who will be in charge of all Pastoral Services; and Father Nicholas who will be supervising the Financial Administration of the parish. May everyone enjoy the blessings of summer rest. DEVELOPMENT NEWS Archdiocese of Miami Stewardship PROSPECTIVE SCHOOL FAMILIES 1. 3. “Woe to the shepherds who mislead and scatter the flock of my pasture, says the Lord.”

Jeremiah warns about evil rulers who mislead the people. Today the same is true. Christian stewards need to educate themselves on significant issues to be good citizens who faithfully follow Catholic teaching.
