INTERNATIONAL JAZZ DAY PRESS RELEASE INTERNATIONAL JAZZ DAY 2021 FOR A CULTURE OF PEACE, A CELEBRATION ACROSS CENTRAL AFRICA Yaoundé, April 28, 2021: UNESCO is pleased to announce that the 10th Edition Internatio- nal Jazz Day will be celebrated all over Africa on 30 April 2021. The International Jazz Day brings together countries and communities around the world each year to celebrate jazz and the role that this genre of music plays in fostering dialogue, fighting discrimination, and promoting human dignity. This year’s celebrations come at a time when the African Union has officially adopted the following slogan; «Arts, culture, and heritage: a lever for building the Africa we want,» as its 2021 theme. In a context marked by the COVID-19 crisis, and its impact on cultural and artistic ex- pressions, the Central Africa region will join the celebrations with artistic, intellectual, and educational activities while also giving the floor to recognized African artists and intellec- tuals. The International Jazz Day offers an opportunity to continue the conversation on the culture of peace and to build resilience among artists who have been particularly impacted since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. Angola, Cameroon, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, and Tchad will be or- ganizing a series of activities on this day including among other things Jazz concerts and an online round table on the shared values of jazz for a culture of peace and Congolese rumba. This day’s concerts around Central Africa will bring together some of the most famous jazz artists in the world like Chico Pinheiro (Brazil), Luís Guerreiro (Portugal), Catarina dos Santos (Portugal), Derek Nakamoto (United States), Sam Mangwana (DRC), Greg Belobo (CMR) and, many others. -

GANS, Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Herbie Hancock reckons he's performed more often in Japan than in his hometown of Chicago during his professional career. The pianist will be back next month for an all-star concert at Osaka Castle Park highlighting the third annual International Jazz Day. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization has chosen Osaka as the host city for International Jazz Day 2014, which will be celebrated around the world on April 30. Hancock, a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, says it's an opportunity to show appreciation for Japanese jazz fans who have been among the world's greatest supporters of the music. He first performed in Japan with Miles Davis' quintet in 1964, and has toured there with his own electric and acoustic groups for decades. "Japanese audiences are very loyal," said Hancock, interviewed ahead of Tuesday's official announcement of the International Jazz Day program. "In Japan, art is really placed on a high level, and jazz is really honored and accepted as being a fine music — much more in comparison to the States." Osaka was chosen as the host city because it "played a leading role in the early days of jazz in Japan" in the 1920s and its jazz scene remains lively today, said Tom Carter, president of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, who is partnering with UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova to present International Jazz Day. -

Despite the recent change in political currents and a re- examination of national identity, the bottom-line question persists, “Is anything really going to be different?” In this context creative musicians go about the business of making a life and making music. The questions to be reckoned with rise to the surface as always, initiating valiant attempts to squeeze out some creative response to the inexorable truth; answers come with great difficulty and spawn new questions. It is a cycle of thought that deposits one in a temporarily liberating space with a license to go for it . one more time. Tony Malaby has been going for it on a regular basis since relocating to the New York area in 1995. Among the many projects that he has initiated, this quartet is of particular interest. My perspective on his music is unique: I have observed Tony’s compositional development over the past decade and had the chance to produce two of his recordings, including this one. Over that period of time we have had occasional discussions of formative processes and approaches to composition and improvisation. -

Convallaria, the startlingly beautiful new Cuneiform album by the collective trio Thumbscrew, offers an all- too-rare case study in the power of underwritten sequestration. Featuring veteran bass master Michael Formanek, protean guitarist Mary Halvorson, and indefatigably resourceful drummer Tomas Fujiwara, Thumbscrew spent two weeks honing the tunes on Convallaria at City of Asylum, an artist residency program in Pittsburgh originally launched as a refuge for writers in exile. In recent years City of Asylum has expanded its purview to include musicians, establishing the BNY Mellon Jazz Residency that in June/July 2015 hosted Thumbscrew. For Thumbscrew, the opportunity for intensive, undistracted collaboration yielded a particularly striking body of music, even by the standards of these prodigious players. Already closely bonded by extensive collaborations in a variety of overlapping ensembles, the powerhouse triumvirate got to spend the kind of concentrated time together that’s “almost unheard of these days,” says Formanek. -

New on INTAKT RECORDS www.intaktrec.ch One marker of bassist Michael Formanek's creativity and versatility is the range of distinguished musicians of several generations he's worked with. While still a teenager in the 1970s he toured with drummer Tony Williams and saxophonist Joe Henderson. Starting in the '80s he played long stints with Stan Getz, Fred Hersch and Freddie Hubbard. Formanek is also a composer and leader of various bands. One of his principal recording and international touring vehicles has been his acclaimed quartet with Tim Berne, Craig Taborn and Gerald Cleaver. His occasional groups include the 18-piece all-star Ensemble Kolos- sus, roping in many New York improvisers he works with. Currently his primary focus is the Michael Formanek Elusion Quartet with Tony Malaby, Kris Davis, and Ches Smith. In putting together the Elusion Quartet, interpreting his music with these specific musicians, Michael Formanek says he sought “a more direct connection to emotions: mine, theirs and the listener’s.” Hank Shteamer writes in the liner notes: "As one zeroes in on the details of Time Like This, it's clear that this sort of emotional immediacy permeates the album. You hear it in Kris Davis’ flowing, balletic solo on “A Fine Mess”; in Tony Malaby's ululating tenor cries on “The Soul Goodbye”; in Ches Smith’s raucous grooves on “That Was Then”; or the leader’s poised, sinewy lines on “Culture of None.” Elusive?
