    2020 Curtis Cup Club Medal Competition Dear Club Manager/Secretary, To celebrate the upcoming Curtis Cup matches set to be played at Conwy Golf Club, 12th–14th June 2020; all golfers in Wales will have the chance to compete for free tickets to watch some of the greatest female amateurs in the world. Alongside the R&A, Wales Golf are able to offer 2 free tickets for the matches to every club. The tickets will be played for in a handicap club medal which will be open to all male and female members, with the winning golfer claiming the prize of the complimentary tickets. In order to claim the tickets for your winning golfer, please simply notify us when you are running your medal and we will send the tickets directly to the club for your distribution to the winner. Running a Mixed Gender Medal In order to ensure male and female golfers can compete fairly against one another, some minor handicap alterations may be required depending on SSS ratings of your course. The information required is available below from the CONGU Unified Handicapping System Manual (Page 92 & 93, App. O) When to run the Club Medal There is no set date or time frame in which to run your club medal, and it can be tied in to existing club competitions if required provided the medal can be run effectively. Travis laid out the two 18-hole golf courses at Westchester Country Club, just 30 miles outside New York City, that opened in 1922. The courses were built by the Philadelphia-based architectural firm of Toomey and Flynn who built the modern course at Shinnecock Hills toward the end of the same decade. The club joined the USGA on Jan. 13, 1922, several months before the courses opened for play that summer. The West Course has hosted many memorable golf events over its history. Beginning with the 1923 U.S. Women’s Amateur, the course went on to host 44 PGA Tour events. The Thunderbird Classic came to Westchester in 1963, with Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus winning two of the first three years.

Jones, Jr., successfully staved off the challenge of the reigning British Ama- teur Champion, T. Phillip Perkins, in the final of the 1928 Amateur Championship by the overwhelming margin of 10 and 9. And now for the Curtis Cup. In the past the United States has won six Curtis Cup Matches to Britain's two, and the 1936 series at Gleneagles, Scotland, re- sulted in a tie at 4% points each.     2012Traditions of Golf Challenge Study Guide HISTORY SECTION PRE - 20th Century “When did the game of golf start?” Golf originated in the 15th century in Scotland. Mary, Queen of Scots introduced the word “caddie” to the game. While playing golf, she was accompanied by a club-carrying young boy whom she called the “cadet”, or “caddie.” Players would hit a pebble around a natural course of sand dunes, rabbit runs and tracks using a stick or primitive club. “How were golf balls developed?” The first real golf ball was known as the “feathery”. The feathery was a leather sack filled by hand with boiled goose feathers, and stitched up and painted. The feathery golf ball period may have started as early as the 1400’s and ended in the early 1850’s. The arrival of the gutta percha ball in 1848 or “guttie”, as it was called, revolutionized the game and allowed golf’s spread to the masses. The guttie was made from rubber, which could be heated, and formulated into a ball. The next revolution in ball design came around 1905 with the patented "Haskell" ball, which is a composite of a solid core wound with thin strips of rubber. Some modern balls (the expensive ones) are made this way today. This ball performed much better than the gutty and could be made cheaply compared to earlier balls. In 1972 the first two-piece ball was introduced by Spalding. These are more popular with amateurs, as they are more durable and considered to be longer and straighter. Many professionals are still devoted to the softer covered balls, since they prefer the added spin for control as opposed to distance.
