  • Retrocomputing As Preservation and Remix
Retrocomputing as Preservation and Remix Yuri Takhteyev Quinn DuPont University of Toronto University of Toronto [email protected] [email protected] Abstract This paper looks at the world of retrocomputing, a constellation of largely non-professional practices involving old computing technology. Retrocomputing includes many activities that can be seen as constituting “preservation.” At the same time, it is often transformative, producing assemblages that “remix” fragments from the past with newer elements or joining together historic components that were never combined before. While such “remix” may seem to undermine preservation, it allows for fragments of computing history to be reintegrated into a living, ongoing practice, contributing to preservation in a broader sense. The seemingly unorganized nature of retrocomputing assemblages also provides space for alternative “situated knowledges” and histories of computing, which can sometimes be quite sophisticated. Recognizing such alternative epistemologies paves the way for alternative approaches to preservation. Keywords: retrocomputing, software preservation, remix Recovering #popsource In late March of 2012 Jordan Mechner received a shipment from his father, a box full of old floppies. Among them was a 3.5 inch disk labelled: “Prince of Persia / Source Code (Apple) / ©1989 Jordan Mechner (Original).” Mechner’s announcement of this find on his blog the next day took the world of nerds by storm.1 Prince of Persia, a game that Mechner single-handedly developed in the late 1980s, revolutionized computer games when it came out due to its surprisingly realistic representation of human movement. After being ported to DOS and Apple’s Mac OS in the early 1990s the game sold 2 million copies (Pham, 2001).

  • The Uses of Animation 1
The Uses of Animation 1 1 The Uses of Animation ANIMATION Animation is the process of making the illusion of motion and change by means of the rapid display of a sequence of static images that minimally differ from each other. The illusion—as in motion pictures in general—is thought to rely on the phi phenomenon. Animators are artists who specialize in the creation of animation. Animation can be recorded with either analogue media, a flip book, motion picture film, video tape, digital media, including formats with animated GIF, Flash animation and digital video. To display animation, a digital camera, computer, or projector are used along with new technologies that are produced. Animation creation methods include the traditional animation creation method and those involving stop motion animation of two and three-dimensional objects, paper cutouts, puppets and clay figures. Images are displayed in a rapid succession, usually 24, 25, 30, or 60 frames per second. THE MOST COMMON USES OF ANIMATION Cartoons The most common use of animation, and perhaps the origin of it, is cartoons. Cartoons appear all the time on television and the cinema and can be used for entertainment, advertising, 2 Aspects of Animation: Steps to Learn Animated Cartoons presentations and many more applications that are only limited by the imagination of the designer. The most important factor about making cartoons on a computer is reusability and flexibility. The system that will actually do the animation needs to be such that all the actions that are going to be performed can be repeated easily, without much fuss from the side of the animator.

  • Black Canary and Zatanna: Bloodspell Free
FREE BLACK CANARY AND ZATANNA: BLOODSPELL PDF Joe Quinones,Paul Dini | 152 pages | 03 Jun 2014 | DC Comics | 9781401210540 | English | United States Black Canary and Zatanna: Bloodspell by Paul Dini Looks like I have to break down and buy this. I am a fan of the creators and characters. Was thinking of waiting out for soft cover. But looks too good to wait. Great review. I think you'd really enjoy it. I have no idea when the softcover will be out probably six months to a year from now. Finally finished reading thru this, and am prepared to go thru it all over again, so good that it was. A treat from start to finish. You know who Dinah and Zatanna reminded me off here? Katina Choovanski and her beloved from Strangers in Paradise - in fact, Dinah had such a Katchoo invested in her the paralles were incredible. The switching Black Canary and Zatanna: Bloodspell between bodies was cool, very funny and exciting in equal parts, and you mentioned the other male heroes such as Supes, GL etc appearing in minor roles; I like that. Esp seeing a confused Supes looing after Dottie. The only thing that didn't ring true was when Dinah broke those metal bonds that held Joy - does she have super-strength or something?!? I agree this Tina wasn't the great super-villain we could have expected - any number of Silver Age baddies could have sufficed, maybe even one of Wonder Woman's female villiains. I really enjoyed this book, from the road trip with the floating hands driving, to the Dinah in disguise spell that was both cute and sexy and amusing.

  • Bf2hub Rules of Engagement (ROE) for Ranked Servers
BF2Hub Systems (www.bf2hub.com) RULES OF ENGAGEMENT (ROE) Last update March 2015 RANKED SERVERS - AN OVERVIEW The ranked server program and ranking system for Battlefield 2 was introduced by DICE and EA and is continued by BF2Hub. It is designed to promote a system of statistics gathering and rewards for players on a level playing field in which players can expect the same standard configuration and playing environment on any ranked server they play on. These standards are achieved and maintained by ensuring that all server providers and server administrators are abiding by a common set of rules as determined by BF2Hub. 1. RULES AND POLICIES FOR TRUSTED PARTNERS / SERVER HOST PROVIDERS BF2Hub is limiting trusted server software distribution to our network of Trusted Partners in order to protect the integrity of the code system. We want everyone to be able to play Ranked Servers if they choose. It is imperative that all of these Rules and Policies be adhered to in order to create a level playing field for everyone. 1.1 Server Configuration 1.1.1 Ranked Servers have a number of settings hard-coded so that users cannot adjust them. These settings are all set as below to keep the competition on Ranked servers balanced across all providers: minPlayers: 16+ (minimum server size is 16 players) sv.password = “” (empty string - Ranked servers may not be password protected. Ranked servers are intended to be available to all players.) sv.numPlayersNeededToStart = (6 for 16-31 maxPlayers, 8 for 32-64) sv.spawnTime 15 sv.manDownTime 15 sv.ticketRatio 100 sv.teamRatioPercent 100 sv.punkBuster 1 1.2 Server Content 1.2.1 Ranked servers must be entirely "pure" with no customization outside of the default content shipped by DICE/EA or BF2Hub.
