ABSTRACT SAPPIE, ALISON MARIE. Objectification of Women in The ABSTRACT SAPPIE, ALISON MARIE. Objectification of Women in the Greek System: Intersectionality and Cross Council Comparisons (Under the direction of Dr. Edwin Gerler). Examining the phenomenon of objectification of women in Greek life through the lens of intersectionality, the first step toward making impactful changes that are effective for all members of the Greek community. This research study uses a phenomenological approach to depict the essence of objectification in the four Greek councils. The research questions of “What role does council membership and race play in male college students’ experiences of objectification of women in the Greek System? What role does council membership and race play in women college students’ experiences of self-objectification in the Greek System? In what ways is objectification similar and different when comparing Greek councils?” are examined through the voices of the participants. Eight Greek students, two from each council, participated in individual in-depth interviews to capture how objectification in Greek life is impacted by the intersection of gender and race in the councils. At the conclusion of the data analysis, six themes emerged to structure their experiences: (a) new members joining, (b) social status, (c) structures that support objectification (d) segregation of councils by race, (e) diverse versus monolithic, and (f) protective factors against objectification. These six structural themes included textural subthemes describing the phenomenon within each structure. The findings were presented comparing and contrasting the gender, race, and intersection of these two demographics for the participants. By examining the relationships between Greek councils and looking at objectification from different lenses in one study, a fuller picture of objectification in Greek life emerged. Both racial and gender factors shaped how women in Greek life were objectified and self-objectified. Without your unwavering support and unconditional belief in my dreams from the moment I was born, this dissertation would not have been possible. When I was young, I though everyone had parents who did all the things you have and continue to do for me. I have come to realize the significance and rarity of your incredible love and type of parents you are, which molded me into the woman I am today. Throughout this process I have reflected on who I am as a scholar and counselor and how so many people have paved the way for me to be in this moment and write this dissertation. I could never name all the activists, researchers, family members, friends, and support systems that have led me here, but I will use the words of my grandmother, Patricia Lee Sappie, from her diary and editorial she wrote to offer a glimpse into what they have taught me. I believe very strongly that God gives to each of us a gift and I believe mine was to see the goodness in others. Part of seeing that goodness is celebrating what makes each of us different and valuing those qualities equally. When I was ten or eleven and attending a church service in Kentucky, a woman stood up and thanked God she was not born black. Even at my fairly young age, God gave me the wisdom to see this as wrong. I’m sure changes must be made. In the workplace, are women not worth as much as a man if we perform the same tasks? Will we be given the opportunity to prove ourselves? In places of worship, aren’t we taught in the Kingdom of God there is no male no female? Then why is our Holy Mother Church so dominated by men? Women make no decisions at the highest levels. I don’t think God really approves of this. iii On my journey through life, I’ve failed, big and little, but the times I’ve been lukewarm is my greatest regret. I am proud that I am a woman and especially proud that many women have found the time to support the rights of a large segment of our population. Change can be accomplished through love, peace, understanding, and probably a little firmness. Her thoughts and words in her diary and local editorial regarding gender and racial equality still apply today and continue to inspire me to continue this work into the rest of my career. iv BIOGRAPHY Alison Sappie pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology from North Carolina State University. It was during this time as an undergraduate student where she first identified her passion for helping others through her coursework, career assessment, and work with the Industrial and Organizational Psychology Lab. Following the completion of her bachelor’s degree, she began graduate coursework in counseling at East Carolina University. During this time, she assisted in opening the McClammy Counseling Laboratory, the counselor education program’s first on- site counseling training clinic. In addition, she served a diverse range of clients in both community mental health and university settings. She earned her master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from East Carolina University in the summer of 2013. As a doctoral student at North Carolina State University, Alison engaged in diverse experiences to expand her teaching, research, and counseling skills. She counseled students on academic probation, worked with college students below the national poverty level, and in the Fraternity and Sorority Life office at Duke University. There she was able to serve Greek students through mentorship, advising, and programming. Alison was able to combine her research interests with her practice through (a) programming that addressed cultural norms that promote gender violence, (b) organizing a luncheon series for Greek women that brought together women of all ages and roles on campus for fellowship and discussion with the Duke Women’s Center, (c) teaching a Greek emerging leaders course focusing on social justice and bystander intervention, and (d) supporting the It’s On Us campaign in the Greek community. v ACKNOWLEDGMENTS There have been so many people who have provided me with guidance and support throughout my journey as a doctoral student and during the dissertation process. I cannot thank them enough for believing in me or the ways they have touched my life. Pornography Consumption and Italian Women’s Sexual Empowerment Raffaella Ferrero Camoletto University of Turin, Italy Lorenzo Todesco University of Turin, Italy Abstract Much quantitative research has been devoted to the correlates of pornography consump- tion, often emphasizing its association with socially undesirable outcomes in the sexual domain. However, much of this research focuses on men, with women pushed into the background if not entirely ignored. The present study aims to fill this gap by exploring whether and to what extent pornography consumption among Italian women is related to two indicators of sexual empowerment: the experience of solitary sex without feelings of 129 guilt and the idea that sexuality is a way to express oneself freely and authentically. To this end, two multivariate logistic regression models were developed. The large random sample survey used here ensures that the findings are more generalizable than those of much quantitative research on pornography carried out to date, which is often based on small convenience samples. The empirical evidence indicates that pornography consump- tion is associated with higher levels of both indicators of sexual empowerment. Pornog- raphy seems to be related to an increased sexual awareness as sexual subjects and to a sense of full entitlement to seek one’s own pleasure. However, some of these results are affected by an interpretative ambiguity in terms of the actual meaning of sexual empow- erment shown by our indicators.

The most damaging aspect of this experience is women’s internalization of this perspective into their own sense of self, which has been shown to predict body image issues, eating disturbances, depression, sexual dysfunction, reduced psychological flow, and substance abuse. More recently, there have been efforts to examine how multiple layers of oppression may impact the experiences of sexual objectification and its psychological consequences. This study tested an extension of objectification theory on a sample of 618 Asian American women with the inclusion of race-related experiences, Asian American cultural values, and their relationships with the self- objectification process and depression. Findings indicate that the more participants endorsed Asian American cultural values, the more they engaged in a self-objectification process that involved internalizing mainstream ideals of beauty, monitoring their body appearance, and feeling shame and less satisfaction with race-related features and their bodies in general, which then predicted depression.

De La Garza Fall 2017 GUCCI: FLATTENING WOMEN 2 Abstract The purpose of this paper is to employ feminist ideological framework and Creative Analytic Practice in evaluating the inferior positionality that women are subjected to through Gucci’s 2003 and 2010 advertising campaigns. My paper enters intellectual discourse surrounding fashion photography and contributes toward the discussion by explicating ways women are flattened physically, visually, and metaphorically. Previous analyses have touched on these topics, but there has been lack of precision and gravity in regard to implications. Furthermore, no research has been presented in regard to Gucci’s perpetuation of such ideals. Hegemonic masculinity’s prevalence is evident, as it pervades every aspect of culture. Though women’s fashion photography targets a primarily female audience, patriarchal heteronormativity implicitly and explicitly undermines women’s autonomy. The “male gaze,” which is evident in all forms of media, is particularly pervasive in women’s fashion photography. Conclusions convey that Gucci’s portrayal of women gives way to the illusion that the female half of the population is of little worth, to be subordinated by the dominant male population. The message being sent is that women, through physical, visual, and metaphorical means, are solely an image. Men have generally been regarded as dominant, masculine, and independent, whereas women are of- ten depicted as weak, sensitive and dependent (Basow, 1986). In contemporary society, however, women are free to adopt more flexible gender roles, ranging from those traditionally regarded as “masculine,” to those considered more “androgynous,” to the more stereotypical female gender roles. Some women, nonethe- less, continue to adopt traditional gender roles in which self-ob- jectification may persist. According to Calogero (2013), “self-ob- jectification occurs when the objectifying gaze is turned inward, such that women view themselves through the perspective of an observer and engage in chronic self-surveillance” (p. 312). The literature suggests that certain factors may support women’s abil- ity to adopt more varied gender roles and avoid self-objectifica- tion.

However, the subsequent consequences of sexually objectifying others remain under- researched. In the current study, we examined the impact of objectification in the domain of sexual assault. Sixty British undergraduate students were recruited to complete an impression formation task. We manipulated objectification by presenting participants with either a sexualized or non-sexualized woman. Participants rated the woman’s mind and the extent to which they felt moral concern for her. They then learned that she was the victim of an acquaintance rape and reported victim blame and both blatant and subtle perceptions of her suffering. Consistent with prior research, sexualized women were objectified through a denial of mental states and moral concern. Further, compared with non-objectified women, the objectified were perceived to be more responsible for being raped.

L. Fredrickson & T.-A. Roberts, 1997) to pre- dict that the media’s insidious practice of objectifying bodies socializes individuals to take an outsider’s perspective on the physical self (i.e., self-objectify) and to habitually monitor their appearance (i.e., engage in body surveillance). To test these hypotheses, a 2-year panel study using an undergraduate sample was conducted. Cross-lagged path models showed that exposure to sexually objectifying television measured during Year 1 increased trait self-objectification (trait SO) during Year 2 for both women and men. At the same time, trait SO during Year 1 decreased exposure to sexually objectifying television during Year 2, suggesting that both male and female participants selectively avoided sexually objectifying television based on antecedent trait SO. Moreover, expo- sure to sexually objectifying television and magazines increased body surveillance for men only.     Check That Body! The Effects of Sexually Objectifying Music Videos on College Men’s Sexual Beliefs Jennifer Stevens Aubrey, K. Megan Hopper, and Wanjiru G. Mbure The present study examined the effects of sexual objectification of female artists in music videos on male undergraduates’ sexual beliefs. Findings showed that participants who viewed music videos of highly objectified female artists reported more adversarial sexual beliefs, more acceptance of interpersonal violence,and, at a level of marginal significance,more negative attitudes about sexual harassment than participants assigned to low-sexual objectifying music videos by the same female artists. Path models indicated that adversarial sexual beliefs mediated the relationship between condition, and (1) acceptance of interpersonal violence and (2) negative attitudes regarding sexual harassment. Critics maintain that the dominant discourse in music videos reproduces distorted ideologies of women’s sexuality (Arnett, 2002; Oware, 2009). Content analyses consistently observed that music videos place a great deal of emphasis on women’s sexual appeal and reinforce the stereotype of women as sex objects, existing pri- marily for the pleasure of male spectators (Aubrey & Frisby, 2011; Seidman, 1992; Sommers-Flanagan, Sommers-Flanagan, & Davis, 1993; Vincent, 1989; Vincent, Davis, & Boruszkowsi, 1987). As Jhally (2007) argued, music videos are often constructed around the ‘‘pornographic imagination,’’ in which women are seen as sex symbols that simply must have sex and will submit to any fantasy that a man may have. Cultural and industry expectations motivate female artists to participate readily in their own sexual objectification. A recent content analysis showed that female artists were even more likely to objectify themselves than male artists were to objectify female characters in their music videos (Aubrey & Frisby, 2011).

Objective. To analyze commercial sex work’s social representations among Brazilian women who identify as transvestite or transsexual. Methods: A qualitative study with a descriptive and analytical approach based on the Theoretical Paradigm of Social Representation with a structural approach. The sample group was formed by 100 women who defined themselves as transvestite and transsexual in Santa Catarina, Brazil. The data was gathered from September to December 2016 via a questionnaire using the technique of free association of words, as well as semi-directed interviews. Results: Through both prototypical and content analysis, it was confirmed that the most likely elements that formed the core of the social representation were: violence, drugs, risk, work, sadness, prejudice, and danger. In the objectification/objectivation process of commercial sex work, the image shows a mix between daily activities in the streets – which they consider to be their battlefield – and their own feelings and experiences of vulnerability in other areas of society, starting with families, churches, schools and the like. Conclusions: By experiencing commercial sex work, female transvestite and transsexual individuals reveal how the elements that form the social representation are of paramount importance in the legitimation, legalization, and simplification of their identities.
