We all want to be free. But finding true freedom within our communities, within our families and within ourselves is no easy task. Nor is it easy to reconcile our own freedom with the political, religious and cultural freedoms of others. Happily, the conflict created by our search for freedom makes for great theatre... Shakespeare’s The Tempest, in which I’m delighted to direct Martha Henry, is a play about the yearning to be released from

CLASSICCLASSI FILMS imprisonment, as revenge and forgiveness vie OscarWildeCinema.com TM for the upper hand in Prospero’s heart. Erin Shields’s exciting new interpretation of Milton’s Paradise Lost takes an ultra- contemporary look at humanity’s age-old desire for free will – and the consequences of acting on it. I’m very proud that we have the internationally renowned Robert Lepage with us directing Shakespeare’s Coriolanus, a play about early Roman democracy. It is as important to understanding the current state of our democratic institutions as is Shakespeare’s play about the end of the Roman Republic, Julius Caesar. Recent events have underlined the need for the iconic story To Kill a Mockingbird to be told, as a powerful reminder that there can be no freedom without justice. Freedom is no less central to our two musicals: in , freedom of expression through the arts brings joy and self-discovery into the hearts of young people, while the raucous fun of celebrates the joy of simply being oneself, without judgment. Sometimes freedom comes in finding our other half, as in Shakespeare’sThe Comedy of Errors or Oscar Wilde’s brilliant An Ideal Husband. Other times our families make our own individual dreams elusive, as in Eugene O’Neill’s great play Long Day’s Journey Into Night or Jordi Mand’s engrossing new work about three famous literary sisters, Brontë: The World Without. Finally, I’m thrilled to direct John Murrell’s new translation of Eduardo De Filippo’s comic masterpiece Napoli Milionaria!, in which a family faces the greatest threat to our freedom – our CINEPLEX EVENTS desire for money. The extraordinarily talented 2018 Stratford Festival is eager to bring these stories to OPERA | DANCE | STAGE | GALLERY | CLASSIC FILMS vibrant life for you.

How many of these, all alluded to in the opening song, “Science Fiction,” do you recognize?

The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) stars Michael Rennie as Klaatu, an alien who arrives with a warning for humanity and is promptly shot by a nervous soldier. (Keanu Reeves starred in a remake, released in 2008.)

Flash Gordon was the hero of a comic strip first published in 1934. Its various radio, TV and film adaptations include a 1930s series starring former Olympic swimmer Buster Crabbe, a campy 1980 movie (the cast of which included Rocky Horror Show creator Richard O’Brien) and a 1974 erotic parody called, inevitably, Flesh Gordon.

In 1933, Claude Rains played the title role in The Invisible Man, based on the novel by H.G. Wells. That same year saw the release of the original King Kong, in which Fay Wray – who had a key role in the 1932 horror thriller Doctor X – played the object of the title character’s affection.

Anne Francis starred (along with Walter Pidgeon and Leslie Nielsen) in Forbidden Planet (1956) – a movie inspired, as it happens, by Shakespeare’s The Tempest.

Arizona is menaced by aliens and monsters in (1953) and by a giant spider in Tarantula (1955), starring Leo G. Carroll, while the whole world is threatened by ambulatory, carnivorous, poison-spitting plants in The Day of the Triffids (1962), starring Howard Keel and Janette Scott.

Dana Andrews starred in a 1957 British film called Night of the Demon (retitled Curse of the Demon in the U.S.). Based on “Casting the Runes,” a short story by M.R. James, it involves a curse inscribed in an ancient runic alphabet. Passing the inscription to the intended victim – who has to accept it in order for the runes to work their evil – requires some ingenuity.

George Pal was the Hungarian-born producer of When Worlds Collide (1951), as well as such other sci-fi classics as The War of the Worlds (1953) and The Time Machine (1960), which he also directed.

RKO Radio Pictures (later just RKO Pictures) was a leading Hollywood studio in the 1930s and ’40s. Its most famous movies include Citizen Kane and the original 1933 King Kong, as well as musicals starring Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire. The initials stand for Radio-Keith-Orpheum.

After the Time Warp, Brad asks, “Say, do you guys know how to Madison?” The Madison was a novelty line dance popular in the late 1950s and the early ’60s. (Its steps are slightly more complicated than those of the Time Warp.)

12 Some other references to listen for:

“We could take in an old Steve Reeves movie,” sings Frank in “.” American muscleman Steve Reeves starred in such films as Hercules (1958), The Last Days of Pompeii (1959) and The Thief of Baghdad (1961).

An even more famous bodybuilder was Charles Atlas, referred to by Frank in “I Can Make You a Man.” Born Angelo Siciliano in Italy in 1892, Atlas developed a muscle-building technique he called “Dynamic Tension.” His ads promised that a “97-pound weakling” (98 pounds in some versions) could transform himself into a new man in just seven days.

“God bless Lili St. Cyr,” sings Janet at the end of the “Floor Show” number. Born Willis Marie Van Schaack in Minneapolis in 1918, Lili St. Cyr was a Hollywood chorus girl who went on to become a noted burlesque and striptease artist. Starting in the 1940s, she spent seven years in Montreal, where she became hailed as the city’s most famous woman. Eventually arrested there on charges of immoral behaviour, she was acquitted at trial, but the Gayety Theatre where she performed was closed down.

One reference in the show, when Rocky sings “The Sword of Damocles,” comes from much longer ago and further away. Damocles was a courtier in Syracuse in the fourth century BCE who unwisely suggested to his monarch, Dionysius II, that life at the top must be pretty cushy. Dionysius responded by letting Damocles sit on his throne for a day. There was just one catch: above him, dangling by a single horsehair, was a heavy sword pointing down at his head. Damocles soon grasped the connection between ruling and risk.

13 SO IT’S YOUR FIRST TIME… BY DAVID PROSSER

If you’ve never seen The Rocky Horror Show before, you’re what the already initiated call a “virgin.” No shame in that – but now that you’re about to take the plunge, here are a few pointers to help you make the most of it. First, don’t get strung out by the way some of your fellow audience members might look. Dressing up – to resemble characters in the show or just to look fantastic on your own terms – is a big part of the Rocky Horror experience. It’s not obligatory, of course, but it does add to the fun. Corsets, garter belts, fishnets, heels as high as you dare – all these and more are eminently suitable. (And the same goes if you’re female.) You can dance if you want to – particularly during the Time Warp, the lyrics of which tell you the moves. Of course, the average theatre seat doesn’t allow a whole lot of room for a jump to the left or a step to the ri-i-i-i-i-ight, so do please be careful of your ’ feet. But with your hands COSTUME DESIGN BY DANA OSBORNE on your hips and your knees in tight, you should be able to manage a decent pelvic thrust. And if you have an aisle seat, you’re cards, anything. A young couple walk into an ice cream parlour. The list of choices is long and curious. This being a fancy place, there’s gelato and frozen yogurt, as well as every imaginable flavour of ice cream. So, how to choose? Well, how about a taste? Will it be French vanilla, pistachio, dulce de leche? The only way to find out is to try a little and see what they like. This behaviour, so normal in an ice cream parlour, becomes a lot more dangerous when the menu is Life and the things we’re asked to taste are other people. And that’s what happens to our heroes, Brad and Janet, when they go to a spooky castle looking for help on a dark and stormy night. But it’s all still delicious. And though we may think we’re good at all this stuff in 2018, we’re really not. We’re still shy, afraid and not a little worried about what our parents will think. Enter Rocky and his Horror Show. Richard O’Brien’s lasting genius is that he only ever wanted his Rocky Horror Show to be “a bit of fun.” And this simple notion has resonated with generations of fans. Tens of millions, in fact. There’s got to be something in it. And there is. It’s love and compassion and childhood dreams of rock stardom! I’m all about communities, and We all need help and encouragement the community of Rocky is dangerous, sexy on this journey, and I believe that wild, and otherworldly (really), but it has a lot to passionate and brilliantly performed rock teach us about acceptance and yielding. ’n’ roll can help us do that. RICHARD O’BRIEN

Born in 1942, Richard O’Brien began his life in the world of entertainment in 1965, when, at the age of twenty-three, he rode horses in British-made movies. He had no desire to become a full-time stuntman and, wisely, took himself off to an evening drama school which claimed to adhere to the teaching principles of Stanislavski, Lee Strasberg, Stella Adler and anyone else who had decided to embrace the more “naturalistic” approach to acting, commonly known as The Method. In 1967, he became an assistant stage manager and understudy in a musical touring version of The Barretts of Wimpole Street, retitled as Robert and Elizabeth. He worked backstage in many West End theatres, most notably the Cambridge Theatre at Seven Dials, where, among other duties, he shone a limelight upon John Hanson, who at the age of forty-six, may well have been the oldest Student Prince that the world had ever laid eyes upon. In 1969, Richard joined an ensemble group in a joyous production of Gulliver’s Travels are The Crystal Maze, a television game at the Mermaid Theatre. THE SECOND TRACK In 2018, with the permission of Canadian Actors’ Equity Association, 13 members of our acting company are devoting part of their season’s work to a program of artistic exploration known as the “Second Track.” This program is conducted under the auspices of the Laboratory, the Stratford Festival’s research and development initiative. THE BIRMINGHAM CONSERVATORY FOR CLASSICAL THEATRE Stephen Ouimette leads this intensive professional training program that nurtures talented young actors for a future in classical theatre. Selected by audition, participants are usually graduates of an accredited theatre training program who have at least two years’ professional experience. Upon completion of the program – which includes, among other activities, classes in voice, movement and text with Festival coaches and distinguished guest instructors – participants are offered places in the following season’s acting company. Twenty-seven members of this season’s company are past participants. The Birmingham Conservatory for Classical Theatre is made possible by the support of the Birmingham family, the Stratford Festival Endowment Foundation and the Department of Canadian Heritage. The 2018 in-season work of Conservatory participants is supported by the Marilyn & Charles Baillie Fund, by the Chicago Associates of the Stratford Festival and by John & Therese Gardner.
