Independent Project, 15 credits “Dis joint is based upon some fo’ real, fo’ real sh*t” Challenging perspectives on race and ethnicity by incorporating Spike Lee’s movie BlacKkKlansman and postcolonial studies in the EFL classroom Author: Sofija Stanic Supervisor: Anna Greek Examiner: Anne Holm Term: HT19 Subject: English Level: Bachelor Course code: 2ENÄ2E Abstract This essay argues for the benefits of incorporating Spike Lee’s film BlacKkKlansman and discussions of postcolonialism in the Swedish upper secondary EFL classroom in order to challenge students’ perspectives on race and ethnicity. The film BlacKkKlansman by Spike Lee is a work that challenges not only American history but also the perspectives of black and white people in contemporary society. Discussing the white and black characters and the social criticism in the movie with students in the English classroom may encourage them to be more open-minded and aware of global political and social issues. Key words Postcolonial criticism; BlacKkKlansman; racial issues; racism; EFL classroom; fundamental values; stereotypes Thanks To my supervisor Anna Greek, thank you for all your kind support and help during the writing of this essay, you helped spark my interest for the subject. Many of the Premiere fi lmmakers were returning directors (Errol Morris, Tom DiCillo, Victor Nunez, Gregg Araki, Kevin Smith), whose earlier, sometimes unknown, work had received a warm reception at Sundance. The Piper-Heidsieck tribute to independent vision went to actor/director Tim Robbins, and a major retrospective of the works of German New-Wave giant Rainer Werner Fassbinder was staged, with many of his original actors fl own in for forums. • But Not As We Know It
LOCKDOWN and LIFE but not as we know it It has long been argued that humans are intrinsically selfish, prone to be territorial and war-like and that these instincts are what helped us, along with our super-large brains to become the earth’s dominant species. However, over the last 50 years this theory has increasingly been questioned and the counter theory has gained ground that humans are actually distinguished from other species, not by their selfishness or intelligence but by their ability to cooperate and learn from and help each other. I heartily recommend ‘Humankind’ by Rutger Bregman if you are interested in this. This has come into focus for me recently because the capacity of people around the world to be selfless, to support others, especially the most vulnerable and to be self- sacrificing has shone through during the current Covid-19 crisis and even the BLM controversy. For every selfish or despicable act that is highlighted in the media we can all point to people who behave in exactly the opposite way. We can see this in the people working in care homes and hospitals; volunteers helping their local community; technology teachers making PPE or people like Marcus Rashford, using his platform as a famous footballer to speak out on behalf of the powerless. This is equally true of our school community. I am full of admiration for the way that we have pulled together, students, families and staff, to make the best of this situation. As we start to see more students in school it is increasingly clear how important human interaction is to our well-being and our capacity to learn.

  • Appendix 01. Synopsis of Blackkklansman Film the Film
Appendix 01. Synopsis of BlacKkKlansman Film The film starts with a small video of a battlefield lying everywhere with the bodies of Confederate soldiers as some try to support those injured and others weep over the dead. This then switches to another video by Dr. Kennebrew Beauregard (Alec Baldwin), who launches into a racial tirade about how African Americans take hold of the country and cause problems for white Protestant Americans. Colorado Springs, CO. 1979 John David Washington (Ron Stallworth) arrives at the local police station. Chief Bridges (Robert John Burke) and Mr. Turrerntine (Isiah Whitlock, Jr.) interview him about whether or not he should be eligible on the team. I want to know how Ron would respond if a white officer were to bully him, considering the current social and political environment surrounding African Americans, and Ron says he 'd turn the other cheek if he has to. Ron is then put on duty as the first black officer. The first task Ron does is to work inside the filing department. One Patrolman named Andy Landers (Frederick Weller) antagonizes him. Ron then goes to Bridges and asks to put him on an assignment to get out in the field, but Bridges refuses his application. Bridges later, though, changes his mind and wants to bring Ron to a Black Panther meeting to see if they intend on radicalizing themselves. Stokely Carmichael (Corey Hawkins), a popular activist, is said to speak there. Bridges has Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver) detectives and Jimmy Creek (Michael Buscemi) sit in while Ron enters with a cable.

  • Race on the Road: from the Periphery to the Centre in Jonathan Kaplan's Love Field
RACE ON THE ROAD: FROM THE PERIPHERY TO THE CENTRE IN JONATHAN KAPLAN’S LOVE FIELD Carmen Indurain Eraso Universidad Pública de Navarra Following a general cinematic trend, the road movie genre in its beginnings relegated the representation of non-whites to the periphery. After analysing the general state of affairs of racial representation in the genre, we witness in the 1990s a timid but remarkable trend to produce “racial” road movies which vindicate the rights of central representation of racial minorities. This paper analyses a representative racial road film, Jonathan Kaplan’s Love Field (1992), in an attempt to show that the road movie’s generic conventions and traditional liberal pedigree may provide a context where the depiction of racial minorities and race relations may finally reach a central status. In the road movie we have an ideogram of human desire and the last ditch search for self, and who is more plagued for hunger and lostness than the socially disenfranchised? (Atkinson 1994:14). 1. RACE ON THE ROAD: A PERIPHERAL PRESENCE While it reminds us of the inner search, a basic trait of the road movie genre, this quotation by Michael Atkinson also makes the significant point that the socially marginalised are liable to experience an even greater need for this personal quest. As members of this underprivileged group together with women, non-whites can feel more intensely the “call to adventure”, to flee from an emotionally retarded society which has failed to integrate them satisfactorily. Thus, given their unfavourable condition in society which has traditionally allotted them a peripheral position as mere accessories to the white male, African Americans, Hispanics or Native ES 27 (2006-7): 75-94 76 CARMEN INDURAIN ERASO American Indians have started to find a central space of cinematic representation in the road genre.

Neo-Brechtian theory has been influential in this regard, as many of Brecht’s theories regarding the epic theatre were incorporated into film theory in the 1970s, just as the field was being formalised as an academic discipline.
