Sunday February 21, 2021 Professor: Vaccine to bring about herd immunity THE COVID-19 vaccine is being used to achieve herd immunity, and that is criti- cal if countries are going to put a dent in the number of COVID-19 cases. So says Professor of Molecular Biology at the University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Professor Paul Brown. Speaking during a recent panel discussion, Brown said there are already a few success stories that countries in the region can look to, and referred to Israel in particular. He said 40 per cent of that country’s popula- tion has been vaccinated and in the first six weeks after the shots had been rolled out, 90 per cent of persons 60 years and over had received the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine. “They have seen an immediate reduc- tion of 41 per cent in confirmed infections, and 31 per cent of hospitalisations. That is huge for a vaccine that persons would have questions about... For persons who were 59 years and lower,it wasn’t as great because less of those persons would have been vaccinated. But they have seen a five per cent drop in hospitalisation and 12 per cent drop in infections, and for the 59 and lower, only about 30 per cent of that population had been vaccinated. So there are tremendous benefits for vaccination,” Senator Rudy Grant, CEO of the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA). he said. He also noted that if there are no hospi- talisations or critical infections, the risk of death is reduced. Brown said once there is effective rollout of the vaccine, there will HOTEL PLANTS TO be a big reduction in such numbers and it will help to curb the spread of the disease.
