SIGNED AT GENEVA, ON 10 JANUARY 1952 The undersigned, duly authorized, Meeting at Geneva, under the auspices of the Economic Commission for Europe, For the purpose of facilitating the crossing of frontiers for passengers carried by rail, Have agreed as follows : CHAPTER I ESTABLISHMENT AND OPERATION OF FRONTIER STATIONS WHERE EXAMINATIONS ARE CARRIED OUT BY THE TWO ADJOINING COUNTRIES Article 1 1. On every railway line carrying a considerable volume of international traffic, which crosses the frontier between two adjoining countries, the competent authorities of those countries shall, wherever examination cannot be satisfactorily carried out while the trains are in motion, jointly examine the possibility of designating by agreement a station close to the frontier, at which shall be carried out the examinations required under the legislation of the two countries in respect of the entry and exit of passengers and their baggage. -

Introduction Previous work package reports on Denmark in this project have already discussed the Danish type of belonging and the resulting ‘civic/culturalist assimilation’ approach to cultural diver- sity and concomitant legislative and political responses (See WP1 and WP2). The field of education in general and primary school education in particular, is no exception to this ten- dency. As no group constituency favours any notion of multiculturalism – which is associated with illiberalism and value relativism – no or very few of the standard multicultural legislative 1 initiatives for the preservation of language, culture, and religion are seen in Denmark. Yet the system of Danish public education is facing cultural and linguistic diversity every day in a way that has to be dealt with. In a Danish political context of lacking political will to any sig- nificant degree of diversity politics this makes this sphere interesting as one of the areas in which the growing foreign/Muslim presence shows the most and in which the host society is directly confronted with cultural differences. -

The Importance of Social Welfare in the Developing World Mohit Prodhan University of Information Technology & Sciences Cathleen Jo Faruque Winona State University Numerous non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and international non-governmental organiza- tions (INGOs) have been working on a massive scale in Bangladesh parallel to the existing govern- mental efforts to alleviate poverty. There have been many success stories, however, more is needed and a change in approach and philosophy is thus called for. To increase efficiency of the various social welfare programs greater coordination of NGOs by the government is essential. This also calls for well trained workers in the field and Bangladesh has good training programs in social work pro- vided by different universities. As the history of social work, as a profession, has historical roots in the Western world, the curricula followed by the different programs in the country are based on western curricula. There is growing realization, however, of the importance and relevance of in- digenization of social work in a globalized world and the curricula in different countries need to be modified to suit individual local areas and populations. Additionally an element of internationaliza- tion is also required in order to better train individual workers to work with a myriad of different environments the new world offers. Social Work in Bangladesh Social work is a profession that is integral and interwoven in all societies. How- ever, the extent of the type of social work in any given country is often under debate. In a densely populated and deeply impoverished country such as Bang- ladesh there is little doubt that the social welfare networks should be extensive and well coordinated. -

Nitrogen deposition has been roughly constant during the past 20 years, with only a minor decrease in the late 1990s. The resulting changes in the chemistry of small lakes have been followed by national monitoring programmes initiated in the 1980s in Finland (163 lakes), Norway (100 lakes) and Sweden (81 lakes). These lakes are partly a subset from the survey of 5690 lakes in the Northern European lake survey of 1995. Trend analyses on data for the period 1990-1999 show that the non-marine sulphate concentrations in lakes have decreased significantly in 69% of the monitored lakes. Changes were largest in lakes with the highest mean concentrations. Nitrate concentrations, on the other hand, were generally low and showed no systematic changes. Concentrations of non-marine base cations decreased in 26% of the lakes, most probably an ionic-strength effect due to the lower concentrations of mobile strong-acid anions. Acid neutralising capacity increased in 32% of the lakes. -
