3 Haydon Wick Community Bus Review

Haydon Wick’s Community Bus service is subsidised by the Parish Council and driven by volunteer drivers. It provides door to door transport for the elderly and disabled residents of the Parish. The service includes regular trips to local shops, local groups and day trips. The bus is also available for private appointments or bookings for organised trips, subject to driver availability.

The Parish Council would like to understand how the current bus service is being used and how we can make it a better service for our residents.

Please take a few minutes to complete the survey (pages 5 & 6) and return it to the Parish Office on Thames Avenue. The Parish Council will review all the feedback and an update will be available in the summer.

The information we collect from you is meant for internal use only and will not be shared with third parties. For further information on our privacy policy please contact the Clerk or visit the Haydon Wick Parish Council website. Your input into the review is important to help shape and protect the future of the community bus service.

18 Tuesday Art Group (Haydon Wick) Over the winter period our artists have been busy working away inside in the warm, using different techniques such as watercolour, acrylics, oils and also sketching with pencil. As a group we gain our inspiration from photos, magazines, real life and other artists. Now that spring is here and summer is approaching, the members of our art group can get outside and capture some magical moments for painting later. This year there has been a wonderful display of Snowdrops, Crocuses and Bluebells around the Haydon area, perfect for those that like to paint flowers. Easter has come and gone, and what wonderful sunny weather we had. Now we look forward to summer, where we can take lots of photos for inspiration. Hopefully the summer weather will be just as good as it was at Easter, plenty of wonderful sunshine. We recently had a workshop with a local artist Jenny Pepper. Jenny showed the group how to use water colour for painting trees and their backgrounds, ideal information for painting landscapes. Jenny showed us how to mix different colours to achieve a natural look, to make our watercolour paintings look vibrant and lively. We are holding an exhibition of the group’s paintings starting the 16th of September for one week. The exhibition will be held upstairs in the Haydon Council Offices. Why not pop along and see the wide variety of artwork the group does, many of which are for sale. Entry is free, and for those that cannot climb stairs we are hoping to have a video system downstairs to show the paintings. We currently have a couple of spaces for anyone who wishes to join the group; we are amateur artists with a variety of skill levels, with both female and male members. If you are interested why not phone Bez (number below). To join the group no particular skill is required (cake baking not essential but extremely welcome), just an interest in art. Please note we do not have formal teaching, just friendly advice from others in the group and occasionally workshops and demonstrations from professional artists. 19 HAYDON WICK OVER 60’s CLUB I would like to start this article by saying ‘well done to the Parish Council for the lovely bench outside the office’, it is a fitting reminder to everyone of the great sacrifices made for this Country in two world wars. The club celebrated its 47th birthday in March, we are proud of this achievement and hope to continue for many years to come. Our first outing of the year was in April to Weston Super Mare, this seems to be quite a favourite with our members and we had a full coach. The weather remained fair, a bonus as there is nothing worse than a ‘soggy seaside’! An enjoyable day was had by all. In May we ventured a bit further to Exeter, and despite having an early start at.8.30a.m. we did not get on to the motorway until 9.0am, the Swindon rush hour seems to be getting worse and I wonder with all the new building going on how long it will be before there is total gridlock. The coach dropped off quite convenient to the Cathedral and main shopping area at 11.0am, but the first port of call seemed to be Weatherspoons for refreshment! This was once a chapel, and the pulpit and stained glass windows have been retained. Then some retail therapy was called for. Again everyone seemed to have enjoyed their day and we got back to Swindon about 6.pm. We meet once a fortnight on a Monday afternoon for a couple of ‘social hours’ with entertainment, raffle and refreshments at the Haydon Wick Working Men’s Club. If you have access to a computer for more information go to our website at www.haydonwickover 60s.co.uk or e-mail us on [email protected] I hope everyone has a lovely summer. Pat Cutting

As the year progresses the club is still going strong. Anywhere between ten and eighteen regular members take part in the Tuesday and Saturday sessions.

A recent match in progress

Our playing surface is separated into three pistes marked by fine cord. The surface is granite chippings around 5 to 10mm in size. The idea is to get your boule closest to the jack. The first team to thirteen points is the winner. In France, where the game is extremely popular you will see teams playing on any available surface. The skill and accuracy of some of the French players is truly amazing. Just for the record, we don’t pretend to be anywhere near that standard! John Fuller

27 To Mow or not to Mow? By Local Resident Helen Rebello The natural world is in trouble. Most people now accept that Red Admiral Butterfly climate change is a massive threat. A recent United Nations report brings further news of doom, warning that one million plant and animal species are facing extinction, due to our (human) actions, while over the last eighty years the UK has lost over seven million acres of wild flower meadow. 28 But it’s not just insects that benefit from long grass and wildflowers. Hedgehogs (numbers of which are in steep decline) find food and shelter in meadowed areas, as would small mammals such as field mice, while birds would feed on insects and grass seeds. There is also increasing scientific evidence of a link between the quality of the green environment we live in and our own mental health; in spring, foamy white clouds of Cow Parsley and the serried ranks of tall canary-yellow buttercups, swaying in the wind, can bring joy and a feeling of connection with nature. We continue to have a monthly theme evening. During the session artists aim to complete the piece of art, interpreting the theme title in their own way. This always creates some interesting work. Our recent themes have been: New Beginnings, Farm animals, Henri Matisse and Water. Of course not everyone wants to take part and this is fine.

Exhibitions We decided to try new exhibition locations and exhibited our artworks in Swindon Central Library during March. We are also excited to be exhibiting at St Peters Church in Marlborough from 22-28th July, this is somewhere we haven’t been before. We are always looking for new temporary and permanent exhibition spaces.

42 We visited the Cheltenham Fresh Art Fair in April which displayed a large selection of contemporary art from more than 50 UK Galleries. It was good to meet some of the artists and be inspired by their work. We look forward to visiting the Fresh Air Sculpture Show at Quenington at the end of next month. Photographer Helen Mugridge gave a fascinating illustrated talk on her work. She is very skilled in capturing both wildlife in motion and superb landscapes, both being topics which appeal to many of our members. See her work at http://www.willridgeimages.co.uk . Helen is coming back to us in the Autumn to judge a competition of our paintings based on her photographs. 43 The Editor’s inbox In the editor’s inbox ([email protected]) we receive emails on a variety of subjects. One recent email highlighted the issue of dog owners who bag their dog waste, then instead of using one of the many dog waste bins, litter bins or even taking it home to their general waste bin, proceed to hang them in hedgerows. This practice is unpleasant for other residents and our staff who must clear it up. So please remember the slogan is “BAG IT & BIN IT” not “BAG IT & HANG IT” p.s. Does anybody know why people do it? Other emails talk about litter, our staff routinely empty the numerous bin about the Parish, they also litter pick, we have a large number of residents who volunteer as litter pickers; for which we are grateful; however it would be so much easier if people didn’t drop it the first place. So please use the bins provided or take it home with you.

Thank you to Haydon Wick Parish Council for awarding us with a recent grant of £640.00. With this grant, the help of the ‘Friends of Britannia’ fundraising group and donations received from parents and grandparents, this has enabled us to purchase the new dresses for the Miniettes troupe just in time for the 2019 display season. The outdoor season has got off to a lovely start. We had a great turnout by members for the annual pre season clear up, even the shed got painted!

We have now taken over more responsibility for maintaining our green and following essential repair to the playing surface during the winter period we now have a lush playing surface. It is quite a task mowing the grass 3 times a week, we have a great team doing this for which we are all very grateful. Without a green there would be no bowling.

The opening Ladies v Men game provided the usual mirth and banter with the guys winning 109 - 86 prior to an American Supper. As I write this we are looking forward to our charity match, the theme being gangsters and molls. If I get any decent pictures I will try and get them in the next magazine issue.

Our Open Day saw a few people through the gates to come and have a go at getting a black wood down the green as near as possible to that little white ball we call the jack. I am pleased to say they are all coming along to the free Monday night coaching sessions along with a few others. If you want to come along we will be only too pleased to see you. That’s every Monday at 6pm. Come and join in whatever your age.

And now I do have some very sad news. One of our members Peter Edwards passed away on 29 April following a tough couple of years. Peter joined the club back in 2003/4 and went on to become a very popular member and a well respected player. He was our ‘go to’ person if anything needed doing round the clubhouse and in 2005 he was our first Club Member of the Year. Together with my husband Derrick he won the Men’s Pairs 3 times, with his wife Marion won the Mixed Pairs twice. He also won, as part of a team, the Triples 5 times, the Presidents Cup in 2006 and the Ken Reynolds Memorial Cup in 2009. He was a regular player for the club playing in numerous Wiltshire, Swindon & District external teams over the years. Aside from the bowling you could not meet a nicer person, he was always there to speak to new members to make them feel welcome, he was always encouraging on the Bowls Green. He loved his bowls. It was a privilege to know him and I speak for everyone in the club when I say he will be missed.

Over 4,000 schools across the UK have made it their aim to speak to their MP about what world leaders need to do to get every child across the globe into school. The messages created by the pupils at Haydonleigh are both inspiring and encouraging - so much so that I have displayed them in my office as a way to spread the good word and allow visitors to see the impressive work.

In a separate class, I got the opportunity to do another of my trademark school assemblies where youngsters were encouraged to learn about how Parliament works by passing their own Parliamentary School Bill. I split the students into two groups, with one side of the room becoming the House of Commons, whilst the other side became the House of Lords. The Bill, which was about increasing the hours spent playing sport in school, was carried by the nominated Clerk, before going back and forth between the Commons and Lords, with both sides disagreeing on how North much Swindon extra sport covers they the wanted, following until wards: the 'MPs' casted their final votes.
