16 Tuesday Art Group (Haydon Wick)

2018 was an enjoyable and successful year for us, ending with our group Christmas lunch, which was a great success and a good time was had by all. Our thanks to the organiser who ensured everything ran smoothly. Now it is all a distant memory, the New Year has started and resolutions have been made. I confess mine are already broken as, yet again, I have failed to do some drawing every day. And no, I have no excuses! Resolutions aside, it is the time of year for looking ahead, and our members have started 2019 with renewed energy and plans for their future artwork. There is always something new to try – a new subject or medium, a different style or technique, taking inspiration from the world around us and from each other. Our first planned activity will be a workshop next month with Jenny Pepper, a talented local artist from whom we will all enjoy learning something new. We are, at the time of writing, at full We also plan to have a group outing later capacity, meaning we are unable to in the year, possibly to a London gallery, welcome new members - short of and are trying to persuade group knocking a couple of walls down to make members to share their expertise by more space! 20 Tips and advice on clearing snow: • When using grit from the bins, there is a tendency to apply too much. It needs to be distributed as sparingly as possible. • It is much easier to clear fresh snow before it has been compacted, make sure you create a pathway down the middle first so that you have a safe and clear path to walk on • Do not use hot water as this will melt the snow but may replace it with black ice • Be a good neighbour and consider if there are any elderly or vulnerable people nearby who may need assistance • Make sure you have an area to put all the snow so that it doesn’t block paths, driveway or drainage • Spread some salt on the areas that you have cleared (table or dishwasher salt will also work). If there is no salt available sand or ash are good alternatives. • Avoid spreading this on plants or grass as they may be damaged • Pay particular care and attention to steps and steep gradients • Use the sun to your advantage moving the top layer of snow will allow the snow to melt underneath. Polite Reminder! Please don’t use take the grit from the salt bins for your own personal use and even worse, don’t fill them up with your household rubbish.

28 THE HAYDON WICK FESTIVAL IS BACK!

After a very successful Festival held back in July 2017, the planning team decided to hold the next Festival on SATURDAY, 13 JULY 2019, commencing with a parade down the High Street in Haydon Wick. The parade will set off at 10.30am and will be led by the Wiltshire Army Cadet Force Corps of Drums and Bugles band, closely followed by the Britannia Majorettes and Miniettes of Swindon. Children are invited to bring along shakers and everyone will be handed union flags to wave as they follow the procession down the High Street to the Orchard at Emmanuel Church. Both bands will be performing in the Orchard again, and there will be lots of food and craft stalls, as well as games for children. For information about the event, or if you would like to run a stall at the Festival, please contact Gerald England at geraldengland@ btinternet.com.

29 Haydon Wick Pétanque Club

Participants in the winter competition

The club had another successful year which culminated in our winter competition held in January on an overcast and slightly rainy day. This was followed by our customary French themed lunch. Competition was keenly fought during the morning. The final result was a two way tie. This resulted in a play-off between the Matches in progress finalists with three boules each to determine who was the overall winner. The club meets on Tuesday and Saturday mornings for games between club members. We play year round, weather permitting and there is no special dress code or footwear required. At intervals, friendly matches are held with a neighbouring club at Cricklade. In the autumn and winter we hold floodlit evening games at Haydon Wick on our piste at the Bowls Club. The away matches at Cricklade are played in the afternoon on their piste at the Cricklade Leisure Centre. Haydon Henge!

A few months ago the office was informed of a "rock formation" in the Parish, which was unfortunately overgrown and no longer visible to those passing by. The POST (Parks & Open Spaces Team) were sent out to cut back the under growth to once more reveal the rocks to the public. The Rocks are now displayed to the world on either side of Thamesdown Drive as it curves into Purton Road. However we are now left with the mystery of where they came from, consensus seems to be that they were put there when Thamesdown Drive was built, and North Swindon developed. If you know different and have any documents or photographs we love to see them. Also if you know of any other features that have disappeared from sight, let us know , so we can see about bring them back into public view.

37 Christmas Hamper Deliveries

Once more the Parish Council distributed Food Parcels to 133 over-70s that live alone in the Parish. This distribution of these parcels has been something the Parish Council has been done for over 30 years. The parcels contain a mixture of store cupboard staples plus some seasonal treats. The Council were aided in our task by The Redeemed Christian Church of God, who use the parish offices for their meeting. Not only did the RCCG provide food items & Christmas cards to go in the bags, members of the congregation came out on Saturday 15th December to help Councillors, Staff and volunteers deliver the parcels.

49 The Compassionate Friends - Swindon area A feeling common amongst newly bereaved parents is that those around them cannot truly understand their loss. A local group was formed in Swindon in 2011. We have parents who are newly bereaved and parents who have been bereaved over 25 years. We have parents who have lost children aged between 2 years and 43 years. Our children have died from illness to accidents to those who have taken their own lives. We meet one a month, on a Tuesday evening, ladies only from 7.00pm to 8.45pm and the following month, on a Wednesday evening in Tesco (Ocotal Way) Community Room from 7.00pm to 9.00pm, for a mixed group of mothers, fathers, grandparents and siblings. We offer support and understanding to one another through our unique grief. The local group is co-ordinated by Margaret Bradbury.
