I pray that I someday will help kindle its wondrous flame! 1 -- Daniel Duke After receiving so much flack from some of my Courtney cousins over, what they consider, my tainting the “honorable Courtney name” by associating it with Jesse James, the reader may imagine my surprise to learn that the real James L. Courtney’s line is linked by blood to my Dorsett line. A family represents a tree standing above ground with the roots representing surnames growing and spreading but that can all be traced back to the main trunk of the tree. Once a name is identified and traced it reveals other names branching off, many of which have historical interest. My Dorsett line descends from Giles Brent, a descendant of Duncan I King of Scotland. 2 Giles Brent’s sister, Margaret Brent, brought her servant, Mary Lawn, to America in 1638 and James 1 Courtesy of Daniel Joseph Duke. Contact: [email protected] THE DAUGHTERS OF HENRY III by Abigail Sophie Armstrong Canterbury Christ Church University Thesis submitted for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2018 ii Abstract This thesis examines Henry III and Eleanor of Provence’s three daughters: Margaret, Beatrice and Katherine. It is a comparative study of their lives and relationships with their parents, arguing that the English king and queen cared greatly for the welfare and prosperity of their daughters from birth. These close family bonds continued after the daughters’ marriages and departures for their husbands’ courts, and both Henry and Eleanor continued to be strong influences in their daughters’ adult lives. This study contributes to the historiography concerning the role of medieval royal daughters. It demonstrates that Margaret and Beatrice were not forgotten about by their natal family following their nuptials but, rather, these relationships continued, and their new marital families were quickly integrated within the larger English royal family.

    Some Lines of Descent to St. Gregory, the Illuminator, Bishop of Leontius Bishop Gregory of Leontius, now called St. Gregory, the Illuminator, Bishop of Leontius, was the first official head of the Armenian Apostolic catholic church. In modern times, he is revered as the Patron Saint of that church, being credited with the conversion of his people from paganism to Christianity in about 301-314 AD. His work led to Armenia’s becoming the first Christian nation on Earth. St. Gregory was born about the year 257 in Armenia, but perhaps as early as 239, according to different sources. His name was Grigor Lusavorich. As a youth, he was taken to Caesarea after his father, Anak Partev (the Parthian) assassinated King Khosrov of Kadj (Parthia), and it was there that Gregory was introduced to the Christian faith. He had been taken there for his protection after members of the King’s family succeeded in their retaliation against his family for his father’s infamous act. In about the year 280, he returned to Armenia where he preached for the remainder of his life. Although the years are a bit ambiguous, it appears that in about 300-314, he was consecrated Bishop, and the following year, he baptized several members of the royal court, including Tiridates III, as well as many other upper class nobles. At that time Tiridates issued a decree for Gregory to begin the movement of converting the nation to Christianity. Gregory died in Armenia in or very near the year 331. After his death, his body was taken to Thodanum.

He was quickly christened by his uncle, Boniface of Savoy, Archbishop of Canterbury. Sanchia was the daughter of Beatrice of Savoy by her father, Raymond, Count of Provence. Sanchia had married, as his second wife, Henry’s brother, Richard, Earl of Cornwall. Her three sisters all married Kings. The eldest, Margaret, was Queen of France and Eleanor was the wife of Henry III of England. The remaining sister, Beatrice, married the King of France’s brother, Charles, Count of Anjou, who became King of Sicily in 1266. The little boy was christened Edmund after the recently canonised Edmund Rich who had been Archbishop of Canterbury from 1233 to 1240. In 1257, his father, Richard, was elected King of the Romans, in effect the King of Germany with the possibility of being crowned Holy Roman Emperor. But Edmund was not his heir as another son, Henry, had been born fourteen years earlier to Richard and his first wife, Isabel Marshal. On his father’s election, Edmund and his family were in future known as ‘of Almain’ being the English rendering of the French name for Germany. Details of Edmund’s childhood are few, but it was eventful. On at least two occasions, he visited Germany with his father and he was caught up in the Barons War which broke out in 1264.

    ABSTRACT Nobility, Knighthood, and Chivalry in Medieval Britain: William Marshal and Simon de Montfort, 1150-1265 T. C. Kniphfer Director: Jeffrey S. Hamilton, Ph.D. Chivalry is a word which holds complex meanings. During the Middle Ages, the idea of chivalry was at the heart of the conception of what it meant to be both a knight and a noble. In this thesis, I argue that through comparing the careers of William Marshal, earl of Pembroke (c.1147-1219) and Simon de Montfort, earl of Leicester (c.1208-1265), one may see how chivalry evolved in Britain during the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Originally chivalry was purely military in its outlook, but by the mid-thirteenth century other elements such as courtly behavior and administrative service had contributed to an alteration of its original conception. By examining the political changes that occurred in the lives of William Marshal and Simon de Montfort, I demonstrate how the political role of the nobility changed. Dennis In May 1390 during a truce in the long running state of war between Scotland and England, Sir David de Lindsay and the English baron, John de Welles, kept a pledge to joust a l’outrance, to the death, with pointed and edged weapons. Other Scots and English knights participated in the tournament held on London Bridge before King Richard II and his court. Lindsay, later first Earl Crawford, is shown in this interpretation at the point he unhorsed de Welles. They then fought on foot, and again de Lindsay prevailed. With Lord de WelIes’ life on the point of the Scot's dagger and the English king having declined to intervene to spare him, the chivalrous Sir David relented and helped the Englishman to his feet rather than slay him. The Scots carried the day and were presented with rich gifts by the English king.
