Peter Read’s Picasso et Apollinaire: Métamorphoses de la memoire 1905/1973 was first published in France in 1995 and is now translated into English, revised, updated and developed incorporating the author’s most recent publications on both Picasso and Apollinaire. Picasso & Apollinaire: The Persistence of Memory also uses indispensable material drawn from pioneering studies on Picasso’s sculptures, sketchbooks and recent publications by eminent scholars such as Elizabeth Cowling, Anne Baldassari, Michael Fitzgerald, Christina Lichtenstern, William Rubin, John Richardson and Werner Spies as well as a number of other seminal texts for both art historian and student.[1] Although much of Apollinaire’s poetic and literary work has now been published in French it remains largely untranslated, and Read’s scholarly deciphering using the original texts is astonishing, daring and enlightening to the Picasso scholar and reader of the French language.[2] Divided into three parts and progressing chronologically through Picasso’s art and friendship with Apollinaire, the first section astutely analyses the early years from first encounters, Picasso’s portraits of Apollinaire, shared literary and artistic interests, the birth of Cubism, the poet’s writings on the artist, sketches, poems and “primitive art,” World War I, through to the final months before Apollinaire’s death from influenza on 9 November 1918. -

(laughter.)As you all know, the Armory Show was opened on February 17th, 1913, fifty years ago, to the day (Fig. 2A, 2B). As a result of this event, it is rewarding to realize that, in these last fifty years, the United States has collected, in its private collections and its museums, probably the greatest examples of modern art in the world today. It would be interesting, like in all revivals, to compare the reactions of the two different audiences, fifty years apart. -

Minneman 1 Ginger Minneman Final Project Essay MA in Humanities candidate Francis Poulenc and Surrealism I. Introduction While it is true that surrealism was first and foremost a literary movement with strong ties to the world of art, and not usually applied to musicians, I believe the composer Francis Poulenc was so strongly influenced by this movement, that he could be considered a surrealist, in the same way that Debussy is regarded as an impressionist and Schönberg an expressionist; especially given that the artistic movement in the other two cases is a loose fit at best and does not apply to the entirety of their output. In this essay, which served as the basis for my lecture recital, I will examine some of the basic ideals of surrealism and show how Francis Poulenc embodies and embraces surrealist ideals in his persona, his music, his choice of texts and his compositional methods, or lack thereof. -

These drawn and painted cityscapes depict specific views near Gris’ Bateau-Lavoir residence in Place Ravignan. Place Ravignan was a small square located off of rue Ravignan that became a central gathering space for local artists and laborers living in neighboring tenements. -

The Founders of the Woodstock Artists Association Tom Wolf The Woodstock Artists Association has been showing the work of artists from the Woodstock area for eighty years. At its inception, many people helped in the work involved: creating a corporation, erecting a building, and develop ing an exhibition program. But traditionally five painters are given credit for the actual founding of the organization: John Carlson, Frank Swift Chase, Andrew Dasburg, Carl Eric Lindin, and Henry Lee McFee. The practice of singling out these five from all who participated reflects their extensive activity on behalf of the project, and it descends from the writer Richard Le Gallienne. -

©Hank Hine, 2015 Picasso, Dalí, and Apollinaire: A triangulation By Dr. Hank Hine © Salvador Dalí, Fundació Gala-Salvador Dalí, Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York 2015 Dalí’s 1952 Portrait of Picasso in the 21st century, 1947, develops an iconography as complex as Dalí’s apparent relation to his subject, the Spanish artist 23 years his senior and his persistent referent as an artist and a Spaniard. This painting was loaned by the Fundació Gala Salvador Dalí and was displayed in the exhibition Picasso/Dalí, Dalí Picasso. As the painting’s title proposes Picasso’s countenance as it will appear in the future, an evolution of Picasso’s features is expected. In order to measure the extent of anticipated alteration in his portrait, we can examine the genesis of those changes in the face he presented to Dalí and to others in the era they shared. We desire to know who were these men who were shaped by similar currents and events and whose artistic responses were remarkably similar. The tide of modernism, the impact of Freud, Catalan language and Spanish identity, the wars and women, mark these artists equally. They each made allegorical responses to war. Yet the commerce between Picasso and Dalí was ardent and asymmetrical. Picasso generously provided Dalí and Gala passage to the United States in 1934. Picasso was already the leading avant-garde artist of his day when Dalí made his first trip out of Spain to meet the famous artist at his studio in 1926. There are stories of dinners in Paris. They shared friends, were photographed by the same photographers, and worked at times in the same idiom. -

"One Term is as Fatuous as Another": Responses to the Armory Show Reconsidered J. M. MANCINI University College Cork If the picture, the Nude Descending the Staircase, had not had that title, it would never have attractedany attentionat all. It was the title. At that moment in history, art and politics came together.... Everythingone wanted stood together at the end of a single perspective and everything one hated stood together in the opposite direction.2 Perhaps because of its familiarity to students of American culture, the 1913 InternationalExhibition of Modem Art is an event whose meaning has remained peculiarly impervious to serious reevaluation. The exhibition, better known as the Armory Show, was the first large- scale exhibition of modernistart in the United States. It was arranged under the auspices of the American Association of Painters and Sculptors, a loosely organized group of artists who had decided by 1911 that there were too few exhibition opportunitiesin the United States, and mastermindedby ArthurB. Davies, Walt Kuhn, and Walter Pach, who negotiated the display of approximately1300 works, more than a third of them European,in order to show Americans what was new and exciting in the world of art. The show was a success in terms of sales and attendance;nearly $45,000 worth of art-including works by the likes of Picasso, Matisse, and Gauguin-changed hands, and approximately275,000 people came to see it during its two months in J. M. Mancini is a lecturer in history at University College Cork and Post-Doctoral Fellow for 1999-2000 at the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution. -

The goal of the society was to normalize modern art in America that was already popular in Europe and introduce American avant-garde artists, by sponsoring lectures, exhibitions, concerts, and publications. The organization collected over a thousand pieces of art, and held 80 exhibitions between 1920 and 1940. The founding members were disappointed by the lack of appreciation for modern art in America by critics and citizens and “believed it was important that the history of art be chronicled not by the historians or academics but by the artists.” (Gross) They felt responsible to give credit to all pieces and artists. This society has had a lasting effect since it first began, donating over a thousand pieces to the Yale art gallery. Marcel Duchamp, a French-American painter born in 1887, was well known for his works of cubism and Dadaism. Cubism is an early 20th century art movement where objects are portrayed in blocky, abstract ways that shows multiple viewpoints and lacks movement. -
