Received YYY; in original form ZZZ ABSTRACT We compile a sample of 341 binary and multiple star systems with the aim of searching for and characterising Kuiper belt-like debris discs. The sample is as- sembled by combining several smaller samples studied in previously published work with targets from two unpublished Herschel surveys. We find that 38 sys- tems show excess emission at 70 or 100 µm suggestive of a debris disc. While nine of the discs appear to be unstable to perturbations from their host binary based on a simple analysis of their inferred radii, we argue that the evidence for genuine instability is not strong, primarily because of uncertainty in the true disc radii, uncertainty in the boundaries of the unstable regions, and orbital projec- tion effects. The binary separation distributions of the disc-bearing and disc-free systems are different at a confidence level of 99:4%, indicating that binary sep- aration strongly influences the presence of detectable levels of debris. -

Zuckerman Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of California, Los Angeles, CA 90095, USA; [email protected] Received 2011 August 10; accepted 2011 November 22; published 2012 January 12 ABSTRACT We have gathered a sample of 112 main-sequence stars with known debris disks. We collected published information and performed adaptive optics observations at Lick Observatory to determine if these debris disks are associated with binary or multiple stars. We discovered a previously unknown M-star companion to HD 1051 at a projected separation of 628 AU. We found that 25% ± 4% of our debris disk systems are binary or triple star systems, substantially less than the expected ∼50%. The period distribution for these suggests a relative lack of systems with 1–100 AU separations. Only a few systems have blackbody disk radii comparable to the binary/triple separation. Together, these two characteristics suggest that binaries with intermediate separations of 1–100 AU readily clear out their disks. We find that the fractional disk luminosity, as a proxy for disk mass, is generally lower for multiple systems than for single stars at any given age. Hence, for a binary to possess a disk (or form planets) it must either be a very widely separated binary with disk particles orbiting a single star or it must be a small separation binary with a circumbinary disk. -

JOY EAR THE BEGINNING of the twentieth century, rapid developments N in observational astronomy were made possible by employing more powerful instruments and by applying the methods of the physical laboratory to studies of the distant heavenly bodies. Through the genius of George Ellery Hale, organizations were established to promote this trend, and larger and larger equipment was designed for extending the field of observation to the surface of the sun and to stellar systems. Walter Sydney Adams, for more than forty years, played a major role in developing and carrying out the extensive program under- taken at the Mount Wilson Observatory under the Carnegie Institu- tion of Washington. The parents of Walter Adams were of old New England lineage. His father, Lucien Harper Adams, was a native of New Hampshire, a graduate of Dartmouth College (1858) and of Andover Theologi- cal Seminary (1861), and an ordained clergyman of the Congrega- tional Church. His mother, Dora Francis Adams, was from Con- necticut and a graduate of Mount Holyoke College (1863). Both were missionaries of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions. Following their marriage, they established a home within the Turkish dominions of North Syria at Kessab on the slopes of Mount Casius near the ancient city of Antioch, ministering mostly to the Armenian population of that mountainous area. -

Late-Type Members of Young Stellar Kinematic Groups – I. Single Stars

Received 2001 May 31; in original form 2001 February 5 ABSTRACT This is the first paper of a series aimed at studying the properties of late-type members of young stellar kinematic groups. We concentrate our study on classical young moving groups such as the Local Association (Pleiades moving group, 20–150 MyrÞ, IC 2391 supercluster (35 Myr), Ursa Major group (Sirius supercluster, 300 Myr), and Hyades supercluster (600 Myr), as well as on recently identified groups such as the Castor moving group (200 Myr). In this paper we compile a preliminary list of single late-type possible members of some of these young stellar kinematic groups. Stars are selected from previously established members of stellar kinematic groups based on photometric and kinematic properties as well as from candidates based on other criteria such as their level of chromospheric activity, rotation rate and lithium abundance. Precise measurements of proper motions and parallaxes taken from the Hipparcos Catalogue, as well as from the Tycho-2 Catalogue, and published radial velocity measurements are used to calculate the Galactic space motions (U, V, W ) and to apply Eggen’s kinematic criteria in order to determine the membership of the selected stars to the different groups.
