  • Pop Music History: the 1960S “Bri?Sh Invasion”
Pop Music History: The 1960s “Brish Invasion” Everyone loves the songs of the early 1960s. Do you know how those songs and bands became popular? Here is what happened. During World War II, many men went away to fight. The war ended in 1945. Soon they were back home and working again. They began to get married. They began to have families. All of a sudden, it seemed, many people were having babies. There were a LOT of babies. They call this me in the 40s and 50s the “Baby Boom.” Then in the 1960s, all those babies were growing up. Now they were teenagers. 70 million! It was a modern age. They called it the Jet Age. Kennedy was President. Young people liked new things, and new music. They liked “mod.” Teenagers oen like to be different from their parents, as they grow up. The 1960s teens had their own culture. Some boys grew their hair longer. They loved pop music. Everyone forgot about Elvis when the Beatles appeared on TV on the Ed Sullivan show in the U.S. in 1964. The Beatles became so popular so quickly, the press called their arrival in the U.S. the “Brish Invasion.” Teens loved the blues‐based, guitar‐ led sound of the Beatles and other Brish groups. They bought all their records. They requested the songs on the radio. They went to their concerts. Other performers were popular, too. Dusty Springfield had big hits, including “I Only Want to Be With You” in 1963. The Hollies had lots of hits, including “Bus Stop” in 1966.

Chorus 2: C F C G Teach your parents well. Their children’s hell did slowly go by. C F C G And feed them on your dreams, the one they pick’s, the one you’ll know by. Bridge "Teach Your Children" is a song by Graham Nash. Although it was written when Nash was a member of the Hollies, it was never recorded by that group in studio. It first appeared on the album Déjà Vu by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young released in 1970. The recording features Jerry Garcia on pedal steel guitar. Nash stated in an interview that the immediate inspiration for the song came from a famous photograph by Diane Arbus, "Child with Toy Hand Grenade in Central Park." The image, which depicts a child with an angry expression holding the toy weapon, prompted Nash to reflect on the societal implications of messages given to children about war and other issues .

  • YARDBIRDS, 10Cc, & Graham Gouldman
YARDBIRDS, 10CC, & GRAHAM GOULDMAN by Alan L. Chrisman The Yardbirds were a legendary British Blues-rock band in the 60’s. Especially because three well-known guitarists came out of one band at one point or another: Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page. They started out as a blues band, replacing The Stones at the Crawdaddy Club in Richmond, England. But Clapton left the band in ’65 because he didn’t like their commercial direction and he joined John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers, to be replaced by Page and later, Jeff Beck, who was known for first experimenting with guitar feedback. The Yardirds also make an appearance in Antonioni’s film, Blowup in 1966. Their first big commercial hits though, “ For Your Love” and “Heart Full of Soul’”were written by songwriter, Graham Gouldman. The still-teenage Gouldman, very influenced by The Beatles, had original planned to give them his song, “For Your Love” , but that night the Yardbirds were opening for The Beatles and he gave it to Jimmy Page instead and it became The Yardbirds’ first big hit. Gouldman also wrote several hits for The Hollies (“ Bus Stop”, “Look Through Any Window”), Herman’s Hermits ( “No Milk Today”) and many others. He briefly replaced, Wayne Fontana of The Mindbenders after their hit, “The Game of Love”, where he met his future 10cc bandmate, Eric Stewart. Kevin Godley and Lol Creme would then join Stewart and Gouldman under the name, Hotlegs and have an international single with “Neanderthal Man” in 1970. The four would then form the art-rock band 10cc.

Stop Stop Stop The Hollies See the girl with cymbals on her fingers Entering through the door Ruby glistening from her navel Shimmering around the floor Bells on feet go ting-a ling-a linging Going through my head Sweat is falling just-a like-a tear drops Running from her head Now she's dancing, going through the movements Swaying to and fro Body moving, bringing back a memory Thoughts of long ago Blood is rushing, temperature is rising Sweating from my brow Like a snake, her body fascinates me I can't look away now Stop, stop, stop all the dancing Give me time to breathe Stop, stop, stop all the dancing Or I'll have to leave Now she's moving all around the tables Luring all in sight But I know that she cannot see me Hidden by the light Closer, closer, she is getting nearer Soon she'll be in reach As I enter into a spotlight She stands lost for speech Stop, stop, stop all the dancing Give me time to breathe Stop, stop, stop all the dancing Or I'll have to leave Stop, stop, stop all the dancing Give me time to breathe Stop, stop, stop all the dancing Or I'll have to leave Now I hold her, people are staring Don't know what to think And we struggle knocking over tables Spilling all the drinks Can't they understand that I want her Happens every week Heavy hand upon my collar Throws me in the street Stop, stop, stop all the dancing Give me time to breathe Stop, stop, stop all the dancing Or I'll have to leave Tištěno z pisnicky-akordy.cz Sponzor: www.srovnavac.cz - vyberte si pojištění online! • "Object Writing"
Object Writing - Exercise Your Metaphor Muscles One of the basic building blocks of songwriting is, of course, metaphor. A simple object or image can convey the emotion or whole focus or story of a song. For example, here are some songs with objects at the heart of them, most of them big hits. Time in a Bottle – Jim Croce; Message in a Bottle – Sting; Longneck Bottle – Garth Brooks How about a Firework? – by songwriters Esther Dean, Mikkel Eriksen, Sandy Wilhelm and Katy Perry Max Martin, Johan Schuster and Taylor Swift got a whole song out of a Blank Space. Chrome Fish became a song about how some Christians with that emblem stuck on their back bumpers have pretty bad manners behind the wheel. (by Joe Beck and Billy Sprague, two of our faculty writers) Object writing has created hit songs for decades from common things like a bikini, chewing gum and even road kill. Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini - Bryan Hyland 1960 Does Your Chewing Gum Lose Its Flavor on the Bedpost Overnight? 1959 by Lonnie Donnegan, later recorded by the Muppets Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road – Lowden Wainwright III 1972 From a simple ring: This Diamond Ring – Gary and the Playboys; Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) – Beyonce To a car: Little Duece Coup - Beach Boys; Mercedez Benz – Janis Joplin; Pink Cadillac – Bruce Springsteen; Little Red Corvette – Prince Or a bird: Black bird – the Beatles; Hummingbird – Seals and Croft; Bluebird - Sara Bareilles; Rockin Robin - Bobby Day; Mockingbird – James Taylor; Fly Like an Eagle – Steve Miller Band Take a look and listen to the song Bus Stop by the Hollies.

  • A Singer-Songwriters' Tribute to the Music of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
Route 61 Music & Hemifrån proudly present A SINGER-SONGWRITERS' TRIBUTE TO THE MUSIC OF CROSBY, STILLS, NASH & YOUNG A 2-disc / 36-page booklet deluxe set. 27 artists, 27 songs. A tribute to the outstanding body of work produced by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. A benefit for the Equestrian Therapy Co-op* in Brandeis, California. *Equestrian Therapy is horseback riding for children and adults who can personally benefit from a natural encounter with horses. By combining horsemanship with concepts of physical and occupational therapy, Equestrian Therapy Co-Op programme promotes balance, coordination, focus and self-confidence in children and adults with special needs. PRODUCERS' NOTE Like all of the musicians on this album, we grew up deeply affected by the music of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Perhaps it was even deeper for us as Europeans, because America was only a place we dreamed of, a far-off romantic world that we tried to understand, and music, movies and books were the among the ways we discovered it. This album is our little effort to thank the four men who opened up that world to us, and made it sing in harmony for more than forty years. Heartfelt thanks go also to all of the artists and bands — most of them good friends of ours — who are part of our larger musical world. Not only did you create your own great music, gifting us with beautiful original songs, but helped us make this tribute album possible. Music is love. That has always been the case. Once upon a time, through the songs of CSNY, we discovered that love was worldwide.
