  • Young Americans to Emotional Rescue: Selected Meetings
YOUNG AMERICANS TO EMOTIONAL RESCUE: SELECTING MEETINGS BETWEEN DISCO AND ROCK, 1975-1980 Daniel Kavka A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC August 2010 Committee: Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Katherine Meizel © 2010 Daniel Kavka All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Jeremy Wallach, Advisor Disco-rock, composed of disco-influenced recordings by rock artists, was a sub-genre of both disco and rock in the 1970s. Seminal recordings included: David Bowie’s Young Americans; The Rolling Stones’ “Hot Stuff,” “Miss You,” “Dance Pt.1,” and “Emotional Rescue”; KISS’s “Strutter ’78,” and “I Was Made For Lovin’ You”; Rod Stewart’s “Do Ya Think I’m Sexy“; and Elton John’s Thom Bell Sessions and Victim of Love. Though disco-rock was a great commercial success during the disco era, it has received limited acknowledgement in post-disco scholarship. This thesis addresses the lack of existing scholarship pertaining to disco-rock. It examines both disco and disco-rock as products of cultural shifts during the 1970s. Disco was linked to the emergence of underground dance clubs in New York City, while disco-rock resulted from the increased mainstream visibility of disco culture during the mid seventies, as well as rock musicians’ exposure to disco music. My thesis argues for the study of a genre (disco-rock) that has been dismissed as inauthentic and commercial, a trend common to popular music discourse, and one that is linked to previous debates regarding the social value of pop music.

Crosby has relapsed, cleaned up again, learned that he had two adult children that he never knew Since Then: How I Survived Everything and Lived To Tell About It by David Crosby and Carl Gottleib (Putnam 2006)(78. 2). David Crosby was a sweet-voiced member of the legendary rock group Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. David Crosby, the outspoken founding member of CSNY and The Byrds, turns his wry and unstinting eye to a fascinating, prickly subject: himself. Known to millions as the trickster poster boy for folkrock utopia and the inspiration for Dennis Hopper's wild-eyed antihero in the film Easy Rider, David Crosby is every bit the quintessential American icon of the counterculture today that he was in the sixties and seventies.

  • TEACH YOUR CHILDREN Graham Nash
TEACH YOUR CHILDREN Graham Nash C F C G You, who are on the road, must have a code that you can live by. C F C G And so, become yourself, because the past is just a good-bye. Chorus 1: C F C G Teach your children well. Their father’s hell did slowly go by. C F C G And feed them on your dreams, the one they pick’s, the one you’ll know by. Bridge: C F C Don’t’ you ever ask them why. If they told you, you would cry. Am F G C F G C So just look at them and sigh and know they love you. C F C G And you, of tender years, can’t know the fears that your elders grew by. C F C G And so, please help them with your youth. They seek the truth before they can die. Chorus 2: C F C G Teach your parents well. Their children’s hell did slowly go by. C F C G And feed them on your dreams, the one they pick’s, the one you’ll know by. Bridge "Teach Your Children" is a song by Graham Nash. Although it was written when Nash was a member of the Hollies, it was never recorded by that group in studio. It first appeared on the album Déjà Vu by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young released in 1970. The recording features Jerry Garcia on pedal steel guitar. Nash stated in an interview that the immediate inspiration for the song came from a famous photograph by Diane Arbus, "Child with Toy Hand Grenade in Central Park." The image, which depicts a child with an angry expression holding the toy weapon, prompted Nash to reflect on the societal implications of messages given to children about war and other issues .
