David Crosby was a sweet-voiced member of the legendary rock group Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. David Crosby, the outspoken founding member of CSNY and The Byrds, turns his wry and unstinting eye to a fascinating, prickly subject: himself. Known to millions as the trickster poster boy for folkrock utopia and the inspiration for Dennis Hopper's wild-eyed antihero in the film Easy Rider, David Crosby is every bit the quintessential American icon of the counterculture today that he was in the sixties and seventies. Legendary, controversial, beloved. Crosby is also the author of three books including Stand and Be Counted: Making Music . Crosby’s two autobiographical volumes are Long Time Gone and Since Then: How I Survived Everything And Lived To Tell About It. Crosby is also the author of three books including Stand and Be Counted: Making Music, Making History/The Dramatic Story of the Artists and Causes That Changed America, which underscores his commitment to social activism, and belief that artists and musicians are potent agents for change. An honest and revealing memoir from musician David Crosby, founding member of The Byrds and Crosby, Stills . An honest and revealing memoir from musician David Crosby, founding member of The Byrds and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. How I Survived Everything and Lived to Tell About It. Reunited with his adult son while awaiting a liver transplant, becoming a famous sperm donor (to Melissa Etheridge and Julie Cypher), coming back from a crippling motorcycle accident, losing his house in an earthquake, and through it all making beautiful music, David Crosby once again reveals all with self-skewering humor and honesty-as only he can. Since Then is both a self-skewering look at the twists and turns of an impossibly rich life, and Crosby's confident declaration that it's far too soon for him to don the robe and slippers of Generational Elder. As a two-time inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, he has an unparalleled legacy as a singer, songwriter, and musician - and few would object if he were to rest on his laurels. A true rock-and-roll survivor, David Crosby has not slowed down since his New York Times bestselling memoir Long Time Gone. He was a cowriter of the screenplay for Jaws, wrote two bestselling books with iconic musician David Crosby, and wrote Which Way Is Up with Richard Pryor, which the New York Times described as one of the controversial comedians’ best screen work. David Crosby – Net Worth, Wife (Jan Dance), Biography. David Crosby is an American singer-songwriter who was a founding member of both the Byrds and Crosby, Stills & Nash. Biography. He was born on August 14, 1941, in Los Angeles, California, USA. His parents were Floyd Crosby, an Academy Award-winning cinematographer and descendant of the Van Rensselaer family, and Aliph Van Cortlandt Whitehead (a descendant of the prominent Van Cortlandt family). Crosby developed an interest in acting, however, he began a lifelong pursuit of music creation at age 16 when his older brother gave him a guitar. David briefly studied drama at Santa Barbara City College before dropping out to pursue a career in music. In 1960, his parents divorced, and his father remarried Betty Andrews Crosby. In the early ’60s, David formed a band with Gene Clark and Roger McGuinn, however, they didn’t have success until they became The Byrds when Michael Clarke and Chris Hillman came along. In 1967, Crosby joined Buffalo Springfield on stage at the Monterey Pop Festival, which contributed to his dismissal from the Byrds. In December 1969, he appeared with CSNY at the Altamont Free Concert, increasing his visibility after performing at Woodstock and Monterey Pop. Debut Solo Album. In 1971, David released his first solo album, ”If I Could Only Remember My Name,” featuring contributions by Young, Joni Mitchell, Nash, and members of the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, and Santana. During an interview, he said: ”My songs emerge from my life, or wherever they do, unbidden and unplanned and completely on a schedule of their own. I can’t legislate a song into being, it just will not happen for me.” In 1982, after being convicted of a few drugs and weapons offenses (the drug charges were related to possession of cocaine and heroin), David spent 9 months in a Texas state prison. In 1985, he was arrested for drunken driving, a hit-and-run driving accident, and possession of drug paraphernalia and a concealed pistol. Image source – © Guliver / Getty Images. In 1990, David took part, once again, in a short-lived Byrds reunion. This time only with Chris Hillman and Roger McGuinn, recording 4 new songs for the boxed set The Byrds. In 1991, he was elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (as a member of The Byrds). In 1994, Crosby lost his L.A. home as a result of massive earthquake damage. In 1997, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (as a member of Crosby Stills & Nash). On March 7, 2004, he was charged with illegal possession of about one ounce of marijuana, a weapon in the 3rd degree, illegal possession of ammunition, and illegal possession of a hunting knife. In 2006, David, along with Nash, accompanied Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour on sessions for his solo album, ”On an Island.” At a concert in October 2008, David, looking quite thinner than in recent years, announced to the public that he had recently shed 55 pounds as a result of his struggles with type 2 diabetes. In January 2014, he released his first solo album in two decades, ”Croz,” recorded in close collaboration with his son James Raymond at the latter’s home studio. In February 2014, at the urging of his healthcare provider, David postponed the final dates of his solo tour in order to undergo an angiogram and a cardiac catheterization, based on the results of a routine cardiac stress test. Image source – © Guliver / Getty Images. On August 26, 2016, he announced a U.S. tour behind his upcoming 5th solo LP, an 18-date trek to launch on November 18, 2016, in Atlanta, Georgia. In September 2017, David announced a solo album entitled ”Sky Trails,” again with Raymond, to be released on September 29, 2017, on BMG. In April 2018, he appeared on NPR’s Live From Here, playing duets with host Chris Thile (an American mandolinist, songwriter, composer, singer, and radio personality, who is best known for his work in the progressive acoustic trio Nickel Creek). On October 26, 2018, David released Here If You Listen on BMG, his 4th solo album in 5 years. On March 30, 2020, Crosby released a solo album, titled – ”Silent Harmony.” Wife. David Crosby has been married to Jan Dance since May 16, 1987. Image source – © Guliver / Getty Images. Children. In January 2000, Melissa Etheridge (an American guitarist, singer-songwriter, and activist) announced that David was the biological father of 2 children with her then-partner Julie Cypher by means of artificial insemination. David has 3 other children: a son, Django Crosby, who was conceived with wife Jan Dance after extensive fertility treatments while David’s liver was failing; a daughter, Donovan Crosby, with former girlfriend, Debbie Donovan; a daughter, Erika, with Jackie Guthrie. Moreover, he had a biological son, James Raymond, in 1962, who was placed for adoption and reunited with David as an adult. David co-wrote many songs with Raymond. Crosby declared: “He’s probably the person I write best with.

  • ROGER Mcguinn
ROGER McGUINN Biography Jim McGuinn, later known as Roger, was already a veteran of the New York and Los Angeles music scene when he co-founded the group that would become the Byrds with Gene Clark and David Crosby in 1964. Prior to forming the Byrds, Roger toured and performed folk music with the Limeliters, Chad Mitchell Trio and Bobby Darin as a guitarist and banjo player. He was also the musical director and guitarist on Judy Collins #3. McGuinn, a Chicago native, studied at the Old Town School of Folk Music and was active on Chicago's folk scene, where he was strongly influenced as a teenager by Bob Gibson. Within a few weeks of finishing high school, McGuinn was working with the Limeliters in California, playing guitar and banjo on their album "Tonight: In Person." McGuinn is also on the Chad Mitchell Trio's albums: "Mighty Day on Campus" and The Chad Mitchell Trio at the Bitter End After touring for awhile with singer Bobby Darin, McGuinn moved to New York at Darin's request to work for his publishing company, TM Music, in the fabled Brill Building as a songwriter. He and Frank Gari co wrote the song "Beach Ball" and performed it with Darin, as the City Surfers, on a very rare single, July 1963. After hearing the Beatles for the first time at the Brill Building, Roger began playing folk songs to a rock beat in the coffee houses of Greenwich Village. His experiments in merging folk and rock didn't please the folk purist, so he moved to Los Angeles to work at the Troubadour.

  • ARSC Journal, Fall 1989 195 Book Reviews
Book Reviews The major problem some people will have with this book involves the criteria for inclusion. But even here it is not too difficult to fault Stambler's reasoning. The major names are here, and covered well. The lesser-known artists are for the most part not included, or mentioned in other entries. However, there are some admirable examples of influential but lesser-known, bands or artists given full coverage, (e.g., The Blasters, Willy Deville, Nils Lofgren, Greg Kihn, Richard Hell and others). And some attempt has been made to include representative heavy metal, rap and punk artists, though not many appear. While it is obvious that in such an all-encompassing work there are bound to be some errors of omission, how could Stambler leave out a band such as R.E.M.? And how can there be an entry for Ian Matthews' semi-obscure band Southern Comfort, yet nothing for Richard Thompson or Fairport Convention? While the book seems to be mainly accurate and fact-filled, some errors did creep in. In the Mike Bloomfield entry, the late guitarist was credited for a solo album by his cohort Nick Gravenites; The Byrds' 1971 LP "Byrdmaniax" appears without the final letter, and at one point Nils Lofgren's pro-solo band Grin is referred to as Grim. There are no doubt a few others, but admittedly none of these errors are fatal. And though the inclusion of 110 pages of appendices in the form of Gold/Platinum Records and Grammy/Oscar winners is nice, I think most of us would prefer an index.

GRAM PARSONS LYRICS Compiled by Robin Dunn & Chrissie van Varik. As performed in principal recordings (or demos) by or with Gram Parsons or, in the case of Gram Parsons compositions, performed by others. Gram often varied, adapted or altered the lyrics to non-Parsons compositions; those listed here are as sung by him. Gram’s birth name was Ingram Cecil Connor III. However, ‘Gram Parsons’ is used throughout this document. Following his father’s suicide, Gram’s mother Avis subsequently married Robert Parsons, whose surname Gram adopted. Born Ingram Cecil Connor III, 5th November 1946 - 19th September 1973 and credited as being the founder of modern ‘country-rock’, Gram Parsons was hugely influenced by The Everly Brothers and included a number of their songs in his live and recorded repertoire – most famously ‘Love Hurts’, a truly wonderful rendition with a young Emmylou Harris. He also recorded ‘Brand New Heartache’ and ‘Sleepless Nights’ – also the title of a posthumous album – and very early, in 1967, ‘When Will I Be Loved’. Many would attest that ‘country-rock’ kicked off with The Everly Brothers, and in the late sixties the album Roots was a key and acknowledged influence, but that is not to deny Parsons huge role in developing it. Gram Parsons is best known for his work within the country genre but he also mixed blues, folk, and rock to create what he called “Cosmic American Music”. While he was alive, Gram Parsons was a cult figure that never sold many records but influenced countless fellow musicians, from the Rolling Stones to The Byrds.
