Smith registered 18 goals and 35 assists for 53 points in 59 games with Cedar Rapids of the USHL last season. • Minnesota State established school records for most wins (32) and home victories (21) in 2018-19. The 32 wins were the most by any team in the nation and the Mavericks enter the year having won at least 20 games for seven consecutive years. • The Mavericks led the country last year with 44 power play goals and also led the nation in goal margin (+71) and goals against average (1.81). • Minnesota State went 21-1-0 in home contests in 2018-19 and ranked 18th in the country in home attendance with a 4,120 average over the course of 22 contests. • Minnesota State has three former players beginning the season on NHL rosters. The fourth goaltender will be eligible to suit up in 2020-21. • In the off-season, Northern Michigan lost 46 percent of its point- scoring to graduation but the 2019-20 squad seems poised to fi ll those shoes. Two rising seniors made up part of the team’s top-fi ve scorers last year in Philip Beaulieu (6g-29a/35pts) and Darien Craighead (10g-10a/20pts). The veteran duo now looks to lead the young team to even more time in the offensive zone. • The Wildcats were pegged to fi nish fourth in the WCHA this season as voted on by the league’s coaches in the 2019-20 Mankato Free Press WCHA Preseason Coaches’ Poll. The media picked Northern Michigan to fi nish third through the regular season, behind only unanimous favorite Minnesota State and Bowling Green. • Having served as an alternate captain in 2018-19, senior defenseman Philip Beaulieu was named captain of the 2019-20 squad prior to the season. • The third head coach in NMU Hockey history enters his third season behind the bench in 2019-20.
