Savory picked up both his first win and Skating Disadvantage 1 10 -9 loss playing against UMass Lowell while wearing the Engineers jersey. Savory was in nets two-days later as UMass Low- Overall 29 31 -2 ell peppered the RPI nets with 35 shots in a 5-2 win. Savory has a career 2.27 GAA and a .928 save percentage in 50 career games. MEEHAN AGAIN: Number 14 with the name MEEHAN on the back of the UMass Lowell jersey may look familiar to long time River Hawk fans. There is a reason. Ben Meehan wears that jersey this season and his father Scott Meehan wore it from 1989 thru 1993. The elder Meehan scored four-goals and 15-points in 124 games for UMass Lowell. He was a teammate of current UMass Lowell Coach Norm Bazin. POINTS OF ORIGIN: The 31 man UMass Lowell hockey roster shows representation from four countries (US, Canada, Slovakia, Swe- den), nine states, and four provinces. The greatest representation comes from Ontario, Canada with five players. Massachusetts and Michigan each claim four players. The newest locales added to the roster this season are Tennessee (Jackson Sterrett) and Oklahoma (Matt Allen). #UNITEDINBLUE

POINTS OF ORIGIN-PART II: In UMass Lowell’s hockey history some 541 players have worn the uniform. That group has represented nine different countries, 29 states and 9 Canadian provinces. Sweden is the European country with the largest number of UMass Lowell skaters, seven. Massachusetts leads the list of states with more than 240 players hailing from the Commonwealth. Ontario with 64 representatives leads the provinces. Two new states were added to the list this season. Matt Allen is the first River Hawk from Oklahoma and Jackson Sterrett is the first from Tennessee. A FAMILIAR FACE RETURNS: Former UMass Lowell defenseman Dylan Zink has returned to the River Hawk roster, so to speak. Zink has rejoined the program as the Director of Hockey Operations. During the defenseman’s four years on the River Hawk blue line he scored 31-goals and 87-points. The 31 goals is the school Division I record for a defenseman. Zink hit double digits in goals in three of his four collegiate seasons and was a member of the Hockey East Tournament champions in 2014 and 2017. He spent the last three seasons playing in the AHL, ECHL and overseas. TOURNAMENT TARGET: UMass Lowell is looking to qualify for the Hockey East Tournament for the 33rd time in 37 years. Recent rule changes by Hockey East suggest that will happen. The team qualified for the post-season for the 32nd time, before the season was shut down a year ago. They have won the in three times (2013, ‘14, ‘17) in the last eight years. The River Hawks are 46-50-3 in Tournament play. UMass Lowell has played in the tournament championship game in seven times including five in a row between 2013 and 2017. RIVER HAWKS IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT: UMass Lowell has made 13 appearances in the NCAA Tournament; eight have been as a Division I program. The River Hawks have made one appearance in the Frozen Four. That was in 2013 when they were elimi- nated by eventual National Champion Yale. Since the Regional Format was established, UMass Lowell has won all seven regional semifinal games that it has played, but the club is 1-6-0 in the regional final. The ULowell Chiefs did win three Division II National Championships (1979, 1981, 1982) in a four-year period. The team is 7-7-1 in Division I Tournament play and 18-10-1 overall. FACING THE BEST: UMass Lowell responded to the challenge, a year ago, winning five out of eight games against top-ten teams in the USCHO and USA Hockey Magazine polls. All but two of those games were on the road. The River Hawks split a two-game series at number one Minnesota Duluth and split a pair of games with number four Boston College and were winners at number seven ranked Providence and split a pair of games with number eight Massachusetts. UMass Lowell also defeated number seven Penn State. YOUTH MOVEMENT: A year ago freshmen led the River Hawk offense. Then-freshmen Matt Brown, with 24-points, Carl Ber- glund, with 23, and Andre Lee with 20, were the team’s top three scorers. UML is the only team in the country whose top three scorers were freshmen. It was the first time that UMass Lowell had three freshmen with 20-points or more since the 1992-93 season when Jeff Daw (12g, 18a, 30pts), Christian Sbrocca (10g, 17a, 27pts.) and Jon Mahoney (11g, 9a, 20pts.) all reached the 20-point plateau. Daw (141pts.) and Sbrocca (171pts.) skated into the UMass Lowell Athletic Hall of Fame. Mahoney finished his career with 88-points. The 2019-20 freshmen class totaled 35-goals and 89-points, they were fifth in the country in goals and sixth in points. River Hawk Awards IN THE CLUTCH: River Hawk freshman Carl Berglund stepped up in the clutch during the 2019-20 season. A “clutch goal” is defined as a goal that either ties the score or gives the team the Henry Welsch, Freshman, Goalie lead in a hockey game. Berglund led the team with nine clutch Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week, December 28 goals, five gave the team the lead, four tied the score. Matt (1GP, 1-0-0, 1.00 GAA, 31 Svs., .968 sv%) Brown was second with five clutch goals. Berglund and Chase Blackmun top the “Clutch” list in the early going with three Chase Blackmun, Junior, Defenseman clutch goals in four games this season. GETTING ON THE BOARD FIRST: How important is the first goal of the game...? UMass Lowell was 12-4-4 last season when they scored the first goal of the game. Since Norm Bazin took over the coaching responsibilities, the River Hawks are 155-30-18 when they score the first goal of the game. That’s a .808 winning percentage. That figure is the second best in the nation. Minnesota State tops the charts at 178-32-13 (.827). BC comes in third at 171-33-20 (.808). Minnesota Duluth is fourth at 158-33-17 (.800). For reference, the national average over the last 9-plus years is .697, and for this year it is .716. OUTSHOT BUT NOT UNDONE: In twenty-one of UMass Lowell’s 34 games in 2019-20 the River Hawks were outshot, but that has had little to do with the outcome. UMass Lowell was 13-5-3 in games in which they have been outshot. On the other hand, when they have the shooting edge they were only 4-5-3. Shots have been even just once and UMass Lowell won that game. This year the team has been outshot twice and is 1-1-0. THE WORST LEAD IN HOCKEY?: Not when UMass Lowell is involved. Since Norm Bazin became head coach, when Lowell has a 2-goal lead at any point in a game, they are 167-12-4, 79-5-3 at the Tsongas Center. The club was 11-1-0, last season, with a two- goal lead. When Lowell trails by 2 goals at any point in a game, they are 6-71-7, 2-32-4 at Tsongas. DEFENSE: Over the past nine-plus seasons, UMass Lowell has allowed just 2.30 goals per game and has a .919 save percentage. Those number are among the best in the country. Only four teams, (Cornell 2.15, Minnesota State 2.16, Quinnipiac 2.19 and Providence 2.28), have a better goals against average and just two, Denver .920 and Cornell .920, has a higher save percentage. ON TARGET: UMass Lowell has scored on 10.265% of its shots on goal during the nine-plus years that Norm Bazin has been behind the bench. Only six teams show greater accuracy. St. Cloud tops the lists at 11.1%. Hockey East rivals Boston College is at 10.8% and Northeastern is at 10.5%. Minnesota is at 10.4%. North Dakota is also at 10.3% and Harvard is at 10.274. RIVER HAWK STRONG AT EVEN STRENGTH: UMass Lowell outscored their opponents by a significant margin when playing even strength hockey during the 2019-20 season. The River Hawks scored 63-goals while allowing just 43 while the teams have been playing with five skaters apiece. This season finds UMass Lowell with a 19-16 edge at even strength through eight games. ON THE EDGE OF YOUR SEAT: UMass Lowell played twenty-two games decided by one-goal or less during the 2019-20 season. Seven of those came consecutively and is the most one-goal games in a row the River Hawks have ever played in their 53 years of hockey. The team was 3-2-2 in that stretch and 10-6-6 in one-goal games last season. They are 1-3-0 this year. EXTRA TIME: Bonus hockey was a common feature during the 2019-20 season. Nine of the River Hawks’ 34 games went into over- time. That matched the school record. The most overtime games that the team has played in a year is nine. That’s now happened four times. UMass Lowell was 2-1-6 in overtime last season. TOP 100: In the recently published Hockey News “Top 100 Players to watch in the NCAA in 2020-21” two River Hawks made the cut. Freshman defenseman Ben Meehan was slotted at #64 and sophomore forward Andre Lee came in at #94. Vs. BIG TIME FOOTBALL SCHOOLS: UMass Lowell is 61-27-7 against schools with big time football programs (FBS members) since Norm Bazin took over behind the bench. That includes an 9-3-2 record against Notre Dame, 4-1-0 record against Penn State and 3-1-0 against Arizona State and an 20-4-1 mark against Massachusetts. The River Hawks are also 11-10-2 against Boston College and 9-6-2 against UConn. They also have winning records against Michigan State, Wisconsin and Miami. GOOD BLOODLINES: Defenseman Nolan Sawchuk has an NHL Hall of Fame connection. His Great Great Uncle was goaltender Ter- ry Sawchuk who played for five NHL teams during a 21-year career. The Hall of Fame goalie won three Stanley Cups with Detroit and one with . GOOD BLOODLINES II: Goalie Logan Neaton’s father Patrick played for the Pittsburgh Penguins during the 1993-94 season. Patrick Neaton played his college hockey at the University of Michigan. STRIPES IN THE BLOOD: Junior forward Austin O’Rourke has an NHL connection of a different kind. His father Dan O’Rourke is a National Hockey League referee, who has worked three Stanley Cup Finals series (2011, 2012, 2016) and has worked over 1,000 career games in the NHL. SEEN IT ALL: UMass Lowell Head Athletic Trainer Artie Poitras was the longest serving hockey athletic trainer with one team and the second longest serving in the country, but the streak has come to an end. Poitras continues to oversee UMass Lowell Athletic Health care, but he has stepped away from his day-to-day work with the hockey program. He has worked more games than any- one else in any capacity. Poitras has been on the bench, in his role as athletic trainer, for 40 years since starting his UMass Lowell career in 1981. He has been witness to a National Championship, three Hockey East Tournament Titles and ten NCAA Tournament visits. The athletic trainer has worked 1,453 games including 1,386 Division I games. He has missed only one game. Poitras’ con- secutive games streak has come to an end after reaching 977. He is the only trainer in College Hockey to work games at both Northern Arizona and Arizona State. RIVERHAWKS RADIO: The River Hawks games can be heard on the internet at https://goriverhawks.com/watch/?Live=214&- type=Live and on WCAP (980AM) in Lowell. Bob Ellis will have the play-by-play call of all River Hawk hockey games throughout the season. He will be joined by analysts Andy Merritt and Jim Connelly on a rotating basis. COACH & MEDIA: Coach Bazin and select players are available to the media every Tuesday following practice. Please contact Ashley Robbins for more information. #UNITEDINBLUE
