The founder of the modern Olympics, PIERRE FREDY BARON DE COUBERTIN , creator of the first modern Games in 1896, was a pistol shooter himself. The noble French man was a sport aficionado, practicing boxing, fenc- ing, rugby, rowing and horse riding, but he had a special attachment to pistol shooting, so much that he earned the title of French champion seven times in his lifetime. But in spite of its noble origins, Pistol shoot- ing became a mass sport in the following centuries, and shooters from 115 DIFFERENT NATIONAL OLYMPIC COMMITTEES have competed in the Games since then. Once again – as seen in Rifle events – US ATH- LETES have been the most active shooters, with 82 athletes competing in Pistol events in 22 different editions of the Olympic Games. ISSF NEWS 15 ROAD TO LONDON MULTI PARTICIPATION

There are no Chinese shooters in the multi-participation rank, but China still stands at the top of the multi-medallists chart, and that proves how quickly the Asian giant transforms its team from Games to Games, always finding new young talent to win the matches. With a winning streak which started in 1992, right up until the latest Beijing’s Games, the PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA has won a total of six medals – and most of them (4) were Gold. Following in second, the Bulgarian team – with the help of the two-time Olympic medallist Grozdeva – also earned six medals in the time span between 1992 – 2004, including two Gold, one Silver and three Bronze medals. Coming in next, in the most- titled countries chart, the 1992 former-URS EUN team, the URS and Russia follows in third, fourth and fifth place, proving how the Russian pistol school has been and remains one of the best in the world. A great shooting sport academy which will send its champions to London, the next showcase for the best pistol shooting competition of the world.
