20 The Saratoga Special Tuesday, August 11, 2015 JUMP RACING THE FIRST SECOND CAREER

“I got my start riding in pony races on the steeplechase circuit, so jump racing is important to me but it’s also a great second career for Thoroughbreds off the flat track. Some were just born for it and plenty of others just need a change of pace. I wouldn’t hesitate to tell an owner or a trainer to consider jump racing with a horse and, in fact, I’ve encouraged owners to consider jump racing with certain horses I’ve ridden.”

Tuesday, August 11, 2015 The Saratoga Special 37 The Art of Racing Honored twice at Saratoga 2015, PEB looks back on lengthy career

The 2015 Saratoga season could be considered the summer of PEB. The ev- er-popular longtime caricaturist for the Daily Racing Form, native Frenchman Pierre Bellocq was honored by the Equine Advocates July 30 and again by the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation Aug. 9. Michael Finney had time to ask the wry octogenarian a few questions on the drive north from his studio in Princeton, N.J.

Finney: What was your initial impression of Saratoga? Peb: For the first time in this country, I found a racetrack similar to what I had experienced at home in Chantilly. The wooden stand, the trees . . . won- derful.

Finney: Is it your favorite track in America? Peb: Well, for sentimental reasons, I would lean toward Laurel Park first and then Belmont. My first association with Laurel, John D. Schapiro and the Washington D.C. International was a beautiful experience. My favorite horse, by far, was Kelso. His owner, Mrs. du Pont, was wonderful. Her colors were gray with a yellow sun and after the birth of my son Remi she sent me a huge Fasig-Tipton yellow paper flower. Racing caricaturist Pierre Bellocq created this American Pharoah sculpture on display at Continued On Page 39 Fasig-Tipton.
