He had a hard upbringing, under the gaze of a strict father who threatened him with the belt if he caught him backing off from a confrontation. 'I used to run from fights,' he told American writer Peter Heller in 1970. 'And papa would see it from the steps. He'd take his belt, he'd say "All right, me or him?" and I'd go beat the kid: His father worked wherever and whenever he could, in shipyards and factories, sometimes as a welder, sometimes as a carpenter. 'I remember nine dollars a week paychecks,' the youngster recalled. 'Me, my mother, my step-brother, and my father and whatever hangers-on there were...there were always floaters in the family.' Pastrano was an overweight child but, like millions of youngsters at the time, he wanted to be a sports star like baseball's Babe Ruth.

Torres was born in the Playita sector of Ponce, the same area that Sor Isolina Ferre would later call home. He joined the U.S. Army when he was 18 years old, where he learned to box. As Puerto Ricans have been United States citizens since 1917, he represented the country while serving in the U.S Army at the 1956 Olympic Games. As an olympian, he won a silver medal as a junior middleweight. He debuted as a professional in 1958 with a first round knockout of George Hamilton in New York. 12 wins in a row followed, 10 of them by knockout (including wins over contenders Ike Jenkins and Al Andrews), after which he was able to make his San Juan debut against Benny Paret, a world welterweight and Middleweight champion whose death after a fight would later on become one of the turning points in the history of boxing. Torres and Paret fought to a 10 round draw, and in 1960, Torres went back to campaigning in New York, where he scored three wins that year, all by decision, including two over Randy Sandy. In 1961, Torres made his hometown debut with a four round knockout win in a rematch with Hamilton at Ponce.

VITO ANTUOFERMO LOVES HER. [FIRST Edition] Boston Globe (pre-1997 Fulltext) - Boston, Mass. Author: Steve Marantz Globe Staff Date: May 31, 1981 Start Page: 1 Section: SPORTS Document Text "These women," said Vito, "are beautiful. To me they are beautiful.Because when I'm in training, I don't want no distractions." On the wall in the bedroom of Antuofermo's sparring partner, Winfield Braithwaite, hang the golden lush images of two Playboy centerfolds. Braithwaite, 24, has not practiced the art of denial as long as Vito. The walls in Vito's bedroom are plaster white and monastery bare. Kutsher's is in its 74th year as a Catskills resort and possibly may be younger than most of the women who come here to play shuffleboard and dine on Schmaltz Herring. The Kutsher Woman is vivacious and friendly and likes nothing better than to pinch Vito on his cheek. When the sun goes down she plays bingo and then goes to sleep. It is a marriage made in heaven: The boxer in training and the woman on Social Security. Freddie Brown, Antuofermo's 73-year-old trainer, decided Kutsher's was the best place to consummate it.

  • “IRISH PAT” MCMURTRY Heavyweight Title Contender & Tacoma Native Son by Peter Bacho
WashingtonHistory.org “IRISH PAT” MCMURTRY Heavyweight Title Contender & Tacoma Native Son By Peter Bacho COLUMBIA The Magazine of Northwest History, Summer 2002: Vol. 16, No. 2 Patrol officer Gordon Swenson hadn't seen anything like it during his long career with the Tacoma Police Department. There he was on the beat in one of Tacoma's toughest neighborhoods on an evening in October and there wasn't a single soul on the street—and not one responder call for an hour. In downtown Tacoma the streets were deserted as well, with the exception of a boisterous crowd of people outside Rhodes Department Store watching a flickering black and white television screen in the window. It was 1958 and Tacoma's pride and joy, boxer "Irish Pat" McMurtry, was stepping into the ring at Madison Square Garden to square off against Canadian heavyweight champion George Chuvalo. Everybody in town was tuned in to watch the fight on television. This was Pat's chance at the big time and the longed-for title shot against world heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson. It was Tacoma's chance at the big time as well because there had never been a local sports hero to compare with Pat McMurtry. Pat was truly Tacoma's own—a blue-collar kid and former marine with looks, personality, and thunder in his fists. He was arguably one of the most talented amateur fighters to ever enter the squared circle, and after he turned professional his fans believed he was sure to go up against Patterson. No one—the president, Willie Mays, Clark Gable, Marilyn Monroe—got as much ink, local press, and media coverage as Pat.
