RAMIREZ, LOURDES, M.A. Alfonso Cuarón’s Problematic Portrayal of Female Figures in Y tu mamá también and Roma. (2020) Directed by Dr. Laura Chesak. 61 pp. The purpose of this work is to analyze the problematic portrayal of female figures in two Mexican films by Alfonso Cuarón: Y tu mamá también (2001) and Roma (2018). I will examine how Cuarón shapes and presents his female characters’ identities as they attempt to emancipate themselves and self-actualize from the hold imposed on them due to societal constraints, such as stereotypical gender roles, class differences, and the domestic spaces that they inhabit. In order to establish this connection, I have supported my work with Laura Mulvey’s male gaze theory and Kimberlé Crenshaw’s intersectional feminism. While Cuarón is known for his feminist filmography, this critique will offer a different take on his female figures to identify the problematic ways in which he has represented them. Copyright By Elías Medina 2019 The Cosmic Race, Decolonization, and Neo-Zapatismo: Mexican Philosophical Thought on Race and Revolution By Elías Medina, B.A. A Thesis Submitted to the Department of History California State University Bakersfield In Partial Fulfillment for the Degree of Master of Arts in History 2019 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank my professor and mentor, Dr. Stephen Allen, for guiding me throughout this two-year project. I owe my research and organization strategies to him. Likewise, I thank my other two mentors, Dr. Kate Mulry and Dr. Cliona Murphy, for taking a look at my work before its submission. I would also like to thank Octavio Barajas for directing me to some of the most crucial sources that I relied on for this project. I thank him for our discussions, which inspired some of my best ideas. I thank Miguel Cuate Jr. for helping me edit this paper. I am grateful for his time and his feedback. Finally, I would like to thank my parents, Manuel and Alma Medina, for their patience and encouragement, not just throughout this endeavor, but throughout my academic career. ABSTRACT This thesis project will argue that the participation of indigenous Mexicans in the Revolution of 1910 and the EZLN uprising of 1994 forced José Vasconcelos, Leopoldo Zea, and Enrique Dussel to reflect on the legacies of Mexico’s colonial past in order to propose how such peoples would form a part of modern Mexican society and identity. Vasconcelos proposed the idea of the cosmic race to encourage indigenous assimilation. Although Zea was a decolonial thinker, he too encouraged indigenous assimilation.

  • Pros and Cons of the 91St Academy Awards Full Version
Whitmire 1 Nick Whitmire Managing Editor, Online Six Mile Post Pros and Cons of the 91st Academy Awards 2018 was a great year for film, and with great films comes celebrations of those films through award shows and the biggest show of the bunch are the Academy Awards or better known as the Oscars. With 91 years of Oscars they have been great highs and all-time lows and with this year’s it seems to be a mixture of both, particularly with the Best Picture category. I am not saying that the eight films that have been nominated are bad, (Except for Bohemian Rhapsody), but looking at the nominees, I was left feeling cold. With the nominees in all twenty-four categories, it feels like there were not only snubs, but also nominated films they have not been recognized the way that they should be. Plus, there are some drastic mistakes that have been made regarding this year’s Oscars along with some kinks that the Academy still need to work out. Regarding the eight nominees for Best Picture, the only ones that are truly worthy of the award are “Black Panther” and “Roma.” Both films are this year’s purest examples of great characters and stories that show the importance of representation in film. With “Black Panther’s” themes of choosing between tradition or innovation and globalism vs isolationism and how to live up to and move on from a complicated legacy and “Roma’s” themes of family and how they change through the circumstances of their society, the loss of innocence, the passing of time, Whitmire 2 how fragile life can be and the passing of time can each film a masterpiece worthy of the Oscar for Best Picture.
