Juni 2014 veröffentlicht Arthaus Musik in enger Zusammenarbeit mit der Strauss-Familie am 14. April 2014 die limitierte Sonderedition THE RICHARD STRAUSS COLLECTION. Diese 11 DVDs umfassende Edition enthält nicht nur die sieben wichtigsten Opern des berühmten deutschen Komponisten sondern darüber hinaus ein 100-seitiges exklusives Buch im LP-Format mit Texten der Strauss-Familie und Ks. Brigitte Fassbaender, seltenes Fotomaterial aus dem Familienarchiv sowie nummerierte Faksimiles. „Am 11. Juni 2014 jährt sich der Geburtstag meines Großvaters Richard Strauss zum 150. Mal. Als sein Enkel war ich immer – wie alle Mitglieder der Familie – eng mit seiner Musik verbunden. Arthaus Musik gibt nun anlässlich seines Jubiläums vorliegende Sonderedition heraus, die mit herausragenden Opernaufnahmen auf DVD besticht. Um das Bild des Menschen Richard Strauss zu vervollständigen, haben wir dieser Edition einige Fotos und Dokumente aus dem Familienarchiv beigefügt. Der Regisseur Thomas von Steinaecker ergründet mit Hilfe von Interviews mit großen Strauss-Sängerinnen, Dirigenten und anderen Strauss-Experten, wie sich das Frauenbild in der deutschen Geschichte verändert und Strauss’ Werk beeinflusst hat.     JULES MASSENET – His Life and Works By Nick Fuller I. Introduction Jules Massenet’s operas made him one of the most popular composers of the late nineteenth century, his works performed throughout Europe, the Americas and North Africa. After World War I, he was seen as old- fashioned, and nearly all of his operas, apart from Werther and Manon , vanished from the mainstream repertoire. The opera-going public still know Massenet best for Manon , Werther , and the Méditation from Thaïs , but to believe, as The Grove Dictionary of Opera wrote in 1954, that ‘to have heard Manon is to have heard all of him’ is to do the composer a gross disservice. Massenet wrote twenty-seven operas, many of which are at least as good as Manon and Werther . Nearly all are theatrically effective, boast beautiful music and display insightful characterisation and an instinct for dramatic and psychological truth. In recent decades, Massenet’s work has regained popularity.     Jana Lengová (Bratislava/Slowakei) Die Wiener Schule und Preßburg/Bratislava: Reflexionen, Aufführungen, Nachwirkung Der Beitrag beschäftigt sich mit der Rezeption der Komponisten Arnold Schönberg, Alban Berg und Anton Webern als Hauptrepräsentanten der Wiener Schule in Preßburg/Bratislava im 20. Jahrhundert bis zum Jahr 2007. Er ist in drei Themenbereiche – Reflexionen, Aufführungen, Nach- wirkung – gegliedert, die allerdings eng miteinander zusammenhängen, was bedeutet, daß die Grenzen zwischen ihnen fließend sind. Im ersten Themen- bereich sind vornehmlich die musikgeschichtlichen, ästhetischen und theo- retischen Ansichten über die erwähnten Komponisten, ihr Schaffen und ihre Bedeutung skizziert, wie sie in den zeitgenössischen slowakischen Periodika sowie in der Literatur publiziert wurden. Im zweiten Themenbereich stehen die Aufführungen der einzelnen Werke und deren Nachhall in der Musikkri- tik im Vordergrund. Im dritten Themenbereich werden die Nachwirkung der Wiener Schule und die Anregungen der Zwölftontechnik bzw. der seriel- len Kompositionsart auf das Musikschaffen der slowakischen Komponisten kurz geschildert. Mit Preßburg ist Arnold Schönberg durch seine Eltern eng verbunden. Bekanntlich stammte Samuel Schönberg, Arnolds Vater, aus dem ungari- schen Teil der Habsburgermonarchie, seine Kindheit verbrachte er – späte- stens ab 1842 – in Preßburg, und erst Anfang der 1850er Jahre übersiedelte er von Preßburg nach Wien.1 Interessanterweise lebte auch Pauline Nachod, Arnolds Mutter, obwohl in Prag geboren, kurz vor ihrer Heirat in Preßburg. Infolgedessen figurierte Arnold Schönberg in den Amtsakten als ungarischer Bürger und nach dem Zerfall Österreichs-Ungarns nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg als tschechoslowa- kischer Bürger. Jedoch blieb seine Beziehung zu Preßburg eher formal, es gibt zur Zeit keine Quellen, die seine näheren persönlichen Kontakte mit den hiesigen Musikern beweisen könnten.

  • Strauss's Arabella
    Strauss’s Arabella - A survey of the major recordings by Ralph Moore Arabella has received relatively few recordings compared with Strauss’ most popular operas: about thirty in the catalogue of which only two were made in the studio, which is really surprising, as it contains some of Strauss’ most sublime music. However, it also has its longueurs and less-inspired stretches, and an absurd interlude in the form of a yodelling song for Die Fiakermilli, “the cabmen’s mascot”, which seems to be Strauss’ only partially successful homage to his namesake predecessor Johann and was really a remnant of the original intent to put the Fiakerball (Coachmen’s Ball) centre- stage, an idea which was largely discarded as Straus and Hofmannsthal worked out the plot. It thus lends itself to excerpts; there are recordings of selections from the opera made by Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Renée Fleming as part of her “Strauss Heroines” album with Susan Graham and Barbara Bonney, which remains one of my favourite recitals. However, Fleming has made a film but not a studio version, and I am considering only complete recordings in German. The queen of recorded Arabellas remains Lisa Della Casa, who made of the two studio versions and may otherwise be heard in half a dozen live performances, some of which I review below. I quote from her obituary in Opera News, 2012: “Della Casa received an enormous professional boost in 1946, when she was cast as Zdenka to the Arabella of Romanian soprano Maria Cebotari, an important star in postwar Europe who had been hired as a guest in Zurich.
