Welcome to the combined December / January issue of the Diary. Its front page features initiatives that are fundamental to saving the planet for future generations. In the long run let’s hope we will see the need for beach cleans diminish as our use of single use plastics is reduced and maybe even eliminated. So well done to all who are putting Dalgety Bay forward to become plastic free. It’s something we can all get involved with and make a contribution. The festive and election season is upon us. Best wishes and I hope you get what you wish for. An Average Day at Inverkeithing High School Inverkeithing High School is a safe place where people have the chance to do a lot, in lessons and like going out at lunch. Our school is a bit different from others, because ours is shaped like a tractor! Even though it looks quite dull outside, our school is colourful on the inside. There are displays around the halls about everything going on at school. We have a one-way system, so people don’t need to shove to get to class. We spend about 6 or 7 hours in school, but some of it is break and lunch time. People travel to school in all kinds of ways, but most of us take the bus. We have all sorts of classes available to us. We have a lot of unique classes that most other schools don’t offer, like Psychology, music tech, computing science (which we do at Fife College). We can also pick masterclasses like mindfulness, Duke of Edinburgh, and more. The teachers make their classes interesting by doing things like groups tasks or making a Kahoot quiz, which is always fun for us. Our school has a lot of clubs out of class. A few of our lunchtime clubs are the journalism club, a lot of sporting clubs, and reading clubs. A few of our after- school clubs are netball, football, and drama club. Everyone here at IHS has their own point of view of our school. I think that if I didn’t go to school, I’d get bored fast. But even if other people think different, it has also given us plenty of opportunities like the Young Philanthropist Initiative, lots of trips and much more. Most importantly the school has helped us to make friendships and plans for our future. Lana Jaf, Megan McLean and Aimee Louise Inverkeithing High School Journalism Club

Great turnout for Beach Cleans A massive thanks to everyone who came along to the beach clean at St Bridget’s on 20 October, it always amazes me that so many people are willing to give up their Sunday morning and come from so far afield. We had folk from Edinburgh, Lochgelly and Amy and Rhiannon even came all the way from Motherwell! The 50 or so brilliant volunteers, including lots of our friends from Dalgety Bay Gala, collected a grand total of 23 bags weighing 93 kg, plus a tyre, two buckets of bottles for recycling and the obligatory shopping trolley. We were also filmed and interviewed by two journalism students from Napier University. While we were doing that, beach adopters Tricia and Anne picked up four bags of litter from Hopeward Wood beach. Well done everyone! We also organised a beach clean for a class from Inverkeithing High School at Bathing House Wood beach on 30 October. Students carried out a survey of the litter they collected and were amazed at the amount of small plastic items like cotton bud sticks and nurdles. We plan to continue working together in the future. I intend to organise a couple of smaller clean-ups over the winter to try and tackle some of the other beaches that could use some extra love, see our Facebook pages for details. All our beach cleans now count towards our efforts to achieve plastic-free community status for Dalgety Bay, so why not join in the next one or volunteer to adopt a section of our coastline for more regular cleaning? We carried out plastic audits at four local businesses and at Dalgety Bay Parish Church. Heather at Hairy Heids Barber’s was confirmed by Surfers Against Sewage as our first Plastic-Free Champion for showing outstanding commitment to eliminating single-use plastics, and she was joined shortly afterwards by Lauren Anderson Therapies, Crafty Pots and Lóuie Brown’s. Well done to all four of you for leading the way on reducing avoidable plastics, we hope other businesses will follow your lead! We held a successful beach clean and litter survey with a class from Inverkeithing High School and are now working towards them becoming a Plastic-Free School. We are also discussing this with both our local primary schools. Our co-coordinator Lindsay’s crisp packet collection scheme is up and running at all the local schools, and we presented our group’s work to the October meeting of the Community Council. Meanwhile, our Facebook page is gaining traction and becoming a great place to swap ideas and information about plastic-free living. We hope to organise various “Plastic Freebuary” activities next February, more on this in the next Diary and on our Facebook page. Plastic-free Tip of the Month: There are lots of web pages offering tips for a plastic-free Christmas, for instance the Marine Conservation Society page https:// www.mcsuk.org/news/12-tips-plastic-free-christmas. We don’t have space to list them all here, but please think about what you can do to reduce single-use plastic consumption – and indeed all avoidable waste – at this time of year. For instance, why not ditch the Sellotape and rediscover the joys of wrapping up presents with string – or just put them in a reusable gift bag? Hopefully next year these will produce similar displays of wild flowers as we have seen this year. Thank you to all our volunteers who have turned out in all weathers. We held our AGM at the end of October in the Sailing Club. It was quite well attended and we were very pleased to invite a new member onto our committee. We are still needing some extra help though, and I include the following appeal from our Chairman, David Macleod. At Monday’s AGM there was discussion about how best to tackle the various activities that the Group undertakes in looking after the woodlands.
