There have been books on the battle to transform the wilderness into an agriculturally ordered land, on the convicts, on the goldrush, on the discovery of the wealth of the continent, on most aspects of settlement, but this is the first to link the story of the discovery of the continent with the slow awareness of its unique trees, shrubs and flowers of Australia. This large and detailed chart is one of the most important and technically impressive monuments of Enlightenment Era cartography. It delineates the entire West Coast of North America from just south of San Diego California, all the way north to just past the site of modern Anchorage, Alaska. While some areas remained to be clarified or refined, overall the often heavily indented coastline is captured with amazing detail and accuracy. Notably it includes the first comprehensive printed mapping of the Pacific Northwest, including the earliest impressions of Puget Sound, Vancouver Harbour, and Strait of George, as well as the first depiction of the insularity of Vancouver Island. It is the culmination of the very best surveys of the West Coast available towards the end of the 18th Century, including those of James Cook, the Comte de La Pérouse, and Robert Gray, as well as surveys conducted by the Spanish Armada Real. George Vancouver and the Contemplated Settlement at Nootka Sound1

King GEORGE VANCOUVER AND THE CONTEMPLATED SETTLEMENT AT NOOTKA SOUND1 George Vancouver (1757-1798) has been justly celebrated for the exhaustive and authoritative survey he undertook during 1792-1794 of the North West Coast of America, that is, of the intricate coasts and offshore islands of present day Washington, British Columbia and Alaska. This he and his ship’s company achieved overcoming the great privations attendant on operating in a severe climate far beyond the support of friendly ports, and for him personally in deteriorating health from the disease that caused his untimely death less than three years after the completion of his voyage. It should also be acknowledged that Vancouver carried out his survey oppressed by the apprehension that he might be thought to have been blameworthy for failing in the other task he had been assigned, that of receiving back from the Spanish commander at Nootka Sound land and property that had been confiscated from English fur traders in July 1789 and of establishing a formal British presence there to support and promote the fur trade. Proposals to establish a British colony on the North West Coast had been discussed in commercial and official circles in the 1780s, encouraged by the success of the project to colonize Botany Bay and Norfolk Island. During the war crisis with Spain that resulted from the arrest of the English fur traders at Nootka Sound, plans were made for a small party of convicts and marines to be sent from New South Wales to make a subsidiary settlement on the North West Coast: one of the ships to be used for this task was to have been the Discovery, which Vancouver afterwards commanded during his expedition. -

Voyages of Discovery Rob Iliffe Geopolitics • 7 Years War (1756-63) between British and French empires left Britain controlling what is now Canada and some of India. • ‘Defensive imperialism’ saw Britain and France compete for remaining land and ocean, including domains held by Spain. • Pacific Ocean became the chief location for competition between these three nations, and then Russia and US. • Britain sought new colonial outposts following the loss of American colonies in 1783, • and they competed for territory with an equally aggressive French empire. Pacific Ocean The Scientific Background • In mid-eighteenth century, Europeans were increasingly fascinated by exotic flora and fauna, especially to acquire them for gardens or museums • and of knowing other peoples (ethnography/ethnology). • The British East India Company and Dutch/ French equivalents were chief means by which botanical and other information travelled from periphery to European centres. • Astronomers and military forces were interested in acquiring ‘useful’ information, particularly, via surveys, strategic cartographic and geodesic information (latitude and longitude). James Cook’s First Voyage (1768-1771) • Voyage was partly scientific and partly strategic, setting a pattern for all major expeditions in next four decades • Left Plymouth in Aug. 1768 to observe the Transit of Venus in the newly-discovered island of Tahiti; arrived via Cape Horn early 1769. • Observed Transit in summer 1769 and then reached New Zealand (Aotearoa) in September, • with the priest Tupaia (from Ra’iatea in what Europeans called the Society Islands) as expert mapmaker, navigator and translator. • Tupaia was able to converse with New Zealand Maori (which seemed extraordinary to Cook) and remains famous among Maori. -

It is 96 miles (154 km) south of Seattle, Washington, and 50 miles (80 km) nort heast of Portland, Oregon. Mount St. Helens takes its English name from the Brit ish diplomat Lord St Helens, a friend of explorer George Vancouver who made a su rvey of the area in the late 18th century.[1] The volcano is located in the Casc ade Range and is part of the Cascade Volcanic Arc, a segment of the Pacific Ring of Fire that includes over 160 active volcanoes. -

Epilogue This has been the story of two “Victorian” gentlemen. Gentlemen that seem, in many ways, to characterise the age and its ambiguities. Both aspired to be country clergymen, following up at the same time, their bent to be naturalists. And if it was not for the offer of passage on the second voyage on the Beagle, Darwin might have ended up there. Yet the offer of the Beagle voyage did materialise and changed Darwin for the rest of his life. He went away on the voyage as a young man, accept- ing, like Fox, the norms of his upbringing and the societal pressures to fit into one of the avenues of professional life available in early nineteenth century England. The long and exacting voyage somehow acted as a trigger, which set Darwin on another course. Yet this reasoning is not sufficient to explain the man. Many other men were recruited into similar trips by the British Navy, at this time, to go out and map the world, both in geographical and natural history ways: T H Huxley and J D Hooker, amongst them. And of these, only Darwin saw the path ahead and stuck to it. And, of course, A R Wallace, who came from a very different stratum of society with a different background of experience, also came to very similar conclusions about organic evolution. William Darwin Fox on the other hand, Darwin’s second cousin and from very similar bloodstock, saw his role in life as the country parson and stuck to that through thick and thin. -

SOME NOTES ON COOK'S AND VANCOUVER'S SHIPS, 1776-80, 1791-95 In March, 1778, Captain James Cook arrived at Nootka Sound in command of an exploring expedition consisting of two vessels H.M.S. Resolution and Dis'covery. In August, 1792, Captain George Vancouver anchored in that sound with his two exploring vessels, H.M.S. Discovery and Chatham. The name "Discovery" common to both expeditions has led some persons to conclude, hastily, that the ships were one and identical. And yet a moment's search would have shown the falsity of the surmise. Captain Cook says (Voyage, 1785 ed., vol. I, p. 2). "the Discovery of 300 tons burthen was pur chased into the service," for the intended expedition; his third and last voyage; whilst in the Introduction to Vancouver's Voy age (1801 ed., vol. I, p. 44) it is stated that: "In the yard of Messrs. Randall and Brent, on the banks of the Thames, a ves sel of 340 tons burthen was nearly finished; and as she would require but few alterations to make her in every respect fit for the purpose, she was purchased; and on her being launched, was named the Discovery." Some information about these four historic vessels seems worthy of a place in our records. I have therefore compiled this short account and in so doing have made free use of Arthur Kitson's Captain James Cook, London, 1907, and Captain Walbran's British Columbia Piau Names, supplemented by letters from the Secretary of Admiralty. Ca,ptain Cook's Resolution This vessel was built by Fishburn at Whitby and launched m July, 1770, as the Marquis of Granby.
