Preview: Gathering of the Vibes 2008 Chad Berndtson July 29, 2008 Having recently finished an enterprise feature for another publication on the glut of national music festivals and what role that glut creates for regional festivals with a lot more personality, I’m more excited this year for the Gathering of the Vibes than I have been in quite some time. As the man said, “He’d have to be one charming motherfuckin pig”…er, sorry, “Personality goes a long way.” Compared to the Roo- and Coachella-sized behemoths, and a lot of the sexy new kids with names both playful and official-sounding—Rothbury might be a bit of both, and allegedly, it was quite the time—the Vibes is a creakier, more elegant dinosaur. A glorious, humble triceratops of a festival, yes, secure in its size, pleasant in its modest ambition and its abilities, not ostentatious, and kindly manageable. And damn isn’t it great to have it back in New England proper (it returned in 2007 after several years of renovation to Bridgeport’s Seaside Park and a few years at various upstate New York locales)? For this born/bred New Englander, it’s not only in a New England/Tri-State area happy medium, but it fills a still-felt void left by the big Phish festivals of yore and especially the can’t-believe-it’s-been-five-years-now departed Berkshire Mountain Music Festival (1997-2003). (For Berkfest alums from those heady days, monsoon conditions and all, have a scoop of nostalgia on the house) The Vibes doesn’t have the gaudy cache of some festivals, or some of the nationally dazzling headliners.

Juli 2013 remastert auf CD und Vinyl By the time they released their fifth album Brothers And Sisters in August 1973, the Allman Brothers Band had experienced dizzying highs and soul-crushing lows. The group had spent its first two years developing its formidable collective chemistry into an unprecedented stylistic fusion that established it as the era’s most influential American rock act. But just as the band had achieved a hard-won commercial breakthrough with 1971’s At Fillmore East, it suffered a devastating loss with the death of Duane Allman, its founder, leader and musical visionary, in a motorcycle crash on October 29, 1971. Following Duane’s traumatic passing, the band regained its bearings and soldiered on, with Duane’s brother, singer/organist Gregg Allman, and guitarist/vocalist Dickey Betts—now the lone axeman in an act famous for its dual-guitar fireworks—assuming more prominent roles in its direction. The musicians marshaled their strengths to make Brothers and Sisters—their first album recorded completely without Duane—a decisive creative rebirth as well as their best-selling release to date. Brothers And Sisters bested the sales of At Fillmore East and Eat A Peach, spending five weeks at #1 and becoming the first Allman Brothers Band release to gain Platinum sales status. • Why You Don't Want to Miss It
WHY YOU DON’T WANT TO MISS IT KING BISCUIT BLUES FESTIVAL OVERVIEW: Presented in the fertile birthplace of Delta blues on the banks of the Mississippi River on land where cotton is king and the blues artists sing, The Biscuit this year fills in the threads between the never to be forgotten legacy of native sons Sonny Boy Williamson and James Cotton with an unparalleled lineup that’s the best of the best from the past, present and future of the blues. WHAT’S SPECIAL ABOUT 2017: This year’s line-up is the sweet spot that presents the blues in all its permutations: Saturday’s headliner Gov’t Mule is a fundamental link between the blues fathers and their contemporary sons and daughters, while Thursday’s headliner Tab Benoit (“the voice of the wetlands”) is the standard bearer of a new generation of Cajun blues musicians. Beyond that, you have the blend of performers like Sonny Burgess, who rubbed shoulders with Elvis Presley in Arkansas clubs at the birth of rock and roll and Bob Margolin, Muddy Waters’ guitarist fresh off The Last Waltz 40th an- niversary tour. You have Paul Thorn who stole the show from B.B. King in 2010 and C.W. Gatlin, who played with Sam Carr and Helena’s own Frank Frost who brings a sense of true blues history with him. Add to that another four dozen performers, plus the opportunity to discover up-and-coming talent on the Rising Biscuit stage and from some of the grittiest busker street performances you’ll find anywhere.

  • 42^ Lezione Di Rock (4^ Anno 2018/2019)
