The Messenger robotic NASA spacecraft went into orbit around Mercury 17, 2011 . It launched August 3, 2004 and did 3 flybys of Mercury in 2008 and 2009, before going into orbit . The initial mission determined Mercury has no atmosphere and is dotted with impact craters. The European and Japanese BepiColombo mission to Mercury is set to launch in July 2016. It will study Mercury’s magnetic field, interior, and surface. It will do Mercury flybys in 2019-2023 and then orbit Mercury starting in January 2024. Missions pass by the planet Venus en route to Mercury. Our groups observed the in 2004 at Lake Baikal and in 2012 at Lake Baikal and in Hawaii.
