Bibliographycal analysis on this leaf-beetles subfamily in Latvia is made for the first time. An annotated list of Latvian Eumolpinae including 4 species of 3 genera is given. INTRODUCTION The fauna of noctuoid moths (the families Erebidae and Noctuidae) of Kazakhstan is still poorly studied. Only the fauna of West Kazakhstan has been studied satisfactorily (Gorbunov 2011). On the faunas of other parts of the country, only fragmentary data are published (Lederer, 1853; 1855; Aibasov & Zhdanko 1982; Hacker & Peks 1990; Lehmann et al. 1998; Benedek & Bálint 2009; 2013; Korb 2013). In contrast to the West Kazakhstan, the fauna of noctuid moths of East Kazakhstan was studied inadequately. -

Holley Center for Agriculture and Health, 538 Tower Road, Ithaca, NY 14853, USA Abstract Native to Eurasia, swallow-worts (“the ugly:” Vincetoxicum rossicum (Kleopov) Barbarich and V. nigrum L. - Apocynaceae) have invaded forested landscapes and prevented native plant regeneration in eastern North America. We first aimed to understand where the invasive populations of both species come from, and then evaluated the impact of potential biological control agents (BCAs). The following phytophagous BCAs have been studied since 2009: Chrysochus asclepiadeus (Pallas) (Col., Chrysomelidae), Abrostola asclepiadis (Denis & Schiffermuller) and Abrostola clarissa (Staudinger) (Lep., Noctuidae). Adults of the beetle feed on leaves while larvae are root feeders, and Abrostola spp. larvae are foliage feeders. Genetically, none of the native V. nigrum populations analyzed to date possesses exactly the major multilocus genotype detected in the invasive North American populations, in contrast to V. rossicum, for which source populations of the invasion are found to be in Ukraine. We performed choice and no-choice specificity tests with French and Russian populations of C. asclepiadeus. We evaluated adult herbivory in no-choice tests on three Vincetoxicum spp., as controls, and seven Asclepias spp.: C. -

Milbrath, Antonio DiTommaso, Jeromy Biazzo, and Scott H. Morris* The European vines pale swallowwort and black swallowwort are invading various habitats in northeastern North America. It is unclear how these plants might respond to potential biological control agents, as they experience little herbivore damage in North America, or longer durations of mowing given the reported lack of efficacy of mechanical control. We evaluated the effect of six seasons of artificial defoliation (50 or 100% defoliation once or twice per season) and clipping (once, twice, or four times at 8 cm above the soil level) on the survival, growth, and reproduction of mature plants of the two species grown in a common garden field experiment. No plants died from damage after 6 yr. Black swallowwort produced more aboveground biomass, whereas pale swallowwort produced more root biomass and root crown buds, compared with its congener species. For most damage treatments, root biomass and the number of crown buds and stems increased over time, whereas aboveground biomass and viable seeds per plant generally did not change. Substantial overlap in plant size and seed production occurred among damage treatments and species. The most severe defoliation treatment did not substantially limit growth and reproduction compared with undamaged plants. While two clippings per season sometimes prevented seed production, four clippings per season was the only type of damage that consistently prevented plant growth and eliminated seed production. Pale and black swallowwort display a high tolerance to aboveground tissue loss in high- light environments without plant competition. -

In summer 2017, the leaf-feeding noctuid moth Hypena opulenta for control of invasive swallow- worts, was finally approved for release in the U.S.! 2017 releases mostly failed, but further efforts are ongoing in 2018 by Lisa Tewksbury and Dick Casagrande at the University of Rhode Island. In the meantime releases are in full swing in Canada with good establishment. In 2018, approval for release was also finally obtained for the U.S. for the gall forming weevil Rhinusa pilosa on Yellow toadflax. Sharlene Sing from the US Forest Service has successfully established a rearing colony in quarantine at Montana State University for future field releases. -

This paper systematizes all pre- vious results of faunistic research on species of the genus that have been registered in Serbia and Mon- tenegro: Abrostola tripartita (Hufnägel, 1766), A. asclepiadis (Denis & Schiffermüller, 1775), A. tripla- sia (Linnaeus, 1758), and A. agnorista Dufay, 1956. to the authors discuss the consistency of morpho- logical characteristics of the wings, review the chitinized genitalia armature of species, and give syno- nyms of the presented species of this genus. KEYWORDS: Noctuidae, Abrostola, Lepidoptera, fauna, Serbia, Montenegro INTRODUCTION In Europe, five species are classified in the genus Abrostola Ochsenchaimer, 1816. Three spe- cies are distributed throughout all of Europe, only one occurs in Southern Europe, while the spe- cies A. clarissa Staudinger, 1900 has been registered only in Bulgaria (BESHKOV, 2000). Due to nu- merous synonyms appearing in the literature and because of inexact quoting of the names of spe- cies, errors constantly appear in papers treating members of this genus from Serbia and Montene- gro. The aim of this paper is to give a precise review of previous data for Serbia and Montenegro.
