Did You Know?

Did you know that there's a connection between muffalettas, Bernado De Galvez and the American war with Britain? The main ingredient in muffalettas is the olive salad. Without that, it's just a sandwich on good bread. And you need the perfect combination of olives, spices and other vegetables to make a great olive salad. So while the olive growers are making their salads, who do they pray to for good weather, crops and vegetables? Why, the Patron Saint of Olive Growers of course, and that is Saint Bernardo Tolomei (1272- 1348). (I can't find a connection to olive trees and Saint Bernardo, but he is their Patron Saint.) There is also a connection between Saint Bernardo Tolomei and New Orleans, or more precisely, Saint Bernard Parish. St. Bernard is named for Saint Bernardo Tolomei, but not for the olive connection, but rather the connection to Bernado De Galvez, who was named for Saint Bernardo. Bernado De Galvez was very instrumental in America's fight for Independence. Galveston, Texas; Galvez Street, St. Bernard Parish and many other places were named for this unsung American hero. Young Galvez joined the Spanish army and in 1764, at the age of 16 he became a captain and continued advancing. In 1776, he came as colonel to Louisiana to subdue the Apaches who preyed on Spanish settlements in the area. He was wounded twice in these battles, but later in the same year, at 29 years of age he became governor of Louisiana. Before Galvez's governorship, he participated in military conflicts in Europe and Africa, studied in France, and was a professor at a prestigious Spanish military academy, making him a prime candidate for governor of francophone Louisiana on January 1, 1777. Galvez spent his early years as governor preparing for a potential conflict with Great Britain, which at the time had more troops along the Gulf Coast than Spain. In April, 1779, Galvez intercepted communications that claimed Great Britain was planning an attack on New Orleans. Galvez went on the offensive. He recruited Acadians (Cajuns), Creoles, free people of color, Isleños, German immigrants, and other Louisianans to join his Spanish army. The eclectic assortment of his army reflected the diversity of 18th century Louisiana. While Governor, he set up colonies in southeast Louisiana for the Canary Islanders (the modern day "Isleños"). Even before Spain entered the war against Great Britain, Galvez was secretly providing guns, clothes, food, money, supplies, and munitions to George Washington's Continental Army and others as well. He also eliminated British influence from the Mississippi River and secured it, allowing French, Spanish and American ships to travel safely with supplies for the war. When Spain officially declared war on the British, Galvez was ordered to attack and capture British forts and settlements in west Florida and to provide more help to the colonists. He was instrumental in Spain's assistance in the American Revolution, capturing British held forts along the Mississippi River and the Gulf Coast. At the end of the war, he returned to Spain as a hero and early in 1785, Galvez was appointed captain- general of Cuba, Louisiana and the Floridas by Spanish King Carlos III. Upon the death of his father, Don Mathias de Galvez, Bernardo was named Viceroy of New Spain (Mexico) where, like in the war, he spent his money in helping its poor people. He died there in 1786 and is buried in Mexico City. So now you know. ~Bradley T. Hayes, Esq. Submitted by Norman Umholtz, George Washington Chapter, LASSAR

EARNING BRONZE AND SILVER COLOR GUARD MEDALS AS A LOUISIANA SOCIETY GUARDSMAN

There are Three Color Guard Medals available in the SAR: Bronze, Silver, and Gold These medals can be earned only once. Each medal is for a 3 year period of color guard participation and they have no add-ons like oak leaf clusters. A year is a twelve month period - not necessarily a calendar year - and the three years are not necessarily consecutive ‘years.’

The system used to award the Bronze and Silver Medals is based on participation at events. This was established at the Board meeting in Lafayette on 25April2015.

The Bronze Medal This medal is for service at the State and/or Chapter levels. It is authorized by the State awarding authority, and should be presented by the State or Chapter President as appropriate.

To earn an SAR Bronze Medal, a Guardsman must participate in at least 50% of the scheduled Color Guard activities for his State and/or Chapter in each of three years

The guardsman keeps up with his participation and forwards his application to his chapter or directly to the society color guard commander. The application has no particular form (at least at this time) but should list three years’ of activities in as formal a manner as the guardsman deems appropriate. Action is then taken at the next board meeting. It is therefore advisable to make applications in a timely manner - that is - taking into account the proximity of a board meeting. .

The Silver Medal This award is made, not at state, but national level. The form to submit for this medal is available online. You must have a Bronze Medal before you can be awarded the Silver Medal. To qualify, our guardsmen must participate in at least three District and/or National events in each of three years.

Here are some helps to determine what events constitute “District and/or National”: o The SAR National Congress o semi-annual Leadership Meetings o An historic commemoration recognized by the NSSAR (Cowpens, Yorktown, etc.) o An Annual District Meeting or Annual District Conference; o Any National or District event at which the President General is present; o Any event specifically qualified by the National Color Guard Committee for example: The Washington’s Birthday Parade in Laredo, Texas, and the George Washington Massing of the Colors in Glendale, California. .

It is strongly suggested that if you are intent on gaining either of these medals that you keep a journal of your participation to include, for your own peace of mind, any pictures or receipts - even parking passes - to remind yourself/prove that you were there.

SOUTHERN DISTRICT SAR MEMBERSHIP MEDAL

The Southern District SAR Membership Medal was approved, as submitted, by the 2015 SAR Medals and Awards committee at the Spring Leadership meeting in Louisville. The VPG will have medals for sale. The Medal is available, without restriction, to any member of the Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and/or Tennessee societies. As planned, 100 medals were presold and ordered for production. Distribution will begin at the Southern District SAR Meeting at Congress. A new District Logo is a residual benefit.

Proceeds from the sale of the medal will support the Walter Buchanan “Buck” Meek Award Fund that recognizes the state society with the largest numerical increase of George Washington Endowment Fund members. Special thanks are extended to the District Logo/Emblem Committee who made this possible – Michael P. Schenk (MS), Chair, Thomas E. Jacks (LA), James K. Stone (TN), James (Jim) J. Thweatt (TN), Thomas Robert (Bob) Thomas (AL), and Michael (Mike) C. Wells (AL). Also, I am especially appreciative that the Valentine Sevier SAR Chapter and its Treasurer Cleo G. Hogan agreed to serve the Treasury role during initial medals sales.

New Louisiana German Coast Revolutionary Militia List located.

Le Comité des Archives de la Louisiana, Inc. publisher of "Le Raconteur" has in their March 2015 issue "1778 Reports of German Coast Inhabitants, Slaves, and Militia" researched and authored by Judy Riffel. This militia list is apparently from the Second German Coast (now St. John the Baptist Parish). Many individuals with early Louisiana colonial ancestors may be able to locate previously unable to be recognized patriots due to the lack of service lists. If you are not currently a member of Le Comité you should be able to locate at your local genealogical library.

CAR News

State CAR president State CAR president Zachary Melinger’s state project is entitled, “Rediscover the Pa s t on the ROAD TO INDEPENDENCE.” The original plaque honoring the patriots of the American Revolution led by General Galvez in the battle of Baton Rouge and placed by former Louisiana Society Children of the American Revolution state president Andrew Merritt is displayed on a concrete wall in Galvez Plaza in downtown Baton Rouge. The plaque and the wall are in disrepair. I propose to investigate restoring the appearance of the plaque and the concrete wall as my state project.

There are 8 CAR societies in Louisiana. They are lacking societies in the NE & NW portion of our state and the there is a need to rebuild the New Orleans society. If any SAR member has an interest in assisting the rebuilding or organizing a local chapter CAR could certainly use your help. They are in need of Senior leadership. The 8 societies and presidents are: 1) Ann Fairfax Society (Baton Rouge)—William Martin, president & Desh Martin Senior Society president; 2) Captain William Pickles Society (Mandeville)—Colin Jacks, president & Tom Jacks, Senior Society president; 3) Count de Pontchartrain Society (Covington)—Pat Gallagher, Senior Society president; 4) Fort Atkinson Society (Lake Charles)—Cagle Kaough, president & Annabelle Byrne-Bartel, Senior Society president; 5) Fort Jesup Society (Many)—Lyle Alford, president & Katie Lombardino, Senior Society president; 6) Jean Baptiste LeMoyne Sieur de Bienville Society (New Orleans)—vacant; 7) Pierre Joseph de Favrot Society (Baton Rouge)—Clair Johnson, Senior Society president; and 8) Thomas Jefferson Society (Baton Rouge)—Luke Leinecke, president & Joy Mellinger, Senior Society president.
