We Are Going to Secondary School. We Are Newham WE ARE GOING TO SECONDARY SCHOOL. WE ARE NEWHAM. Year 7 Admissions in September 2022 Information relating to Pan London Year 7 coordination and In-Year Admissions for 2021/2022 A summary of the steps you need to take to apply for a place in Year 7, starting in September 2022. This applies to children born from 1 September 2010 to 31 August 2011. REMEMBER – your chances of getting the school of your preference are better if you apply by Sunday 31, October 2021. It is important that you understand this booklet, so please dedicate time to reading it. 1 Don’t worry. If you need support, your child’s primary school can provide it. Do not just focus on the schools you know about. Take time to find out about all the schools located in Newham. You can do this by attending as many open days/evenings as you can and 2 by viewing their websites. Note: Ofsted reports and league tables can be out of date. Read and understand how places are offered at the schools you are interested in. You do this by reading their admissions criteria and reviewing the placements for September 2021 which are published in this booklet on pages 40-41. 3 You can use these figures and School Finder to calculate your own home-to-school distances. This will help you understand the likelihood of your child being offered a place. Decide which schools you are going to name as your preferences remembering you can name six. Don’t forget to check that you know their location so you know where your child will be 4 travelling to each day and the cost of the journey. Submit your online application via eadmissions.org.uk by Sunday, 31 October 2021 no later than 11.59pm. You should apply earlier to avoid the risk of technical issues close to the deadline. If you apply using the paper Common Application Form (CAF), you will need to: 5 • post the form to Pupil Services, PO Box 69972, London E16 9DG. It must arrive no later than Friday 29 October 2021. See pages 76-77 for information about applying online. If you are naming a voluntary-aided faith school as any of your preferences and want to be considered under the faith-based criterion, you must complete and submit their Supplementary Information Form (SIF). 6 For Newham Catholic schools your SIF must be received by the school no later than Friday 29 October 2021. If the school you prefer is outside Newham, you must check the closing dates. If you are applying for a school outside of Newham you must submit your proof of address with your application via the eAdmissions portal by Sunday, 31 October 2021 or if you are applying using a paper form, post with the form for delivery by Friday, 29 October 2021. 7 See pages 74-75.     The industrial and community heritage of Silvertown and North Woolwich Introduction The Islanders is a project that aims to preserve the industrial and community heritage of Silvertown and North Woolwich. It is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and the Royal Docks Team. Volunteers and local participants have contributed significantly to the project. Thames Festival Trust thanks Newham Archives (The Islanders’ Heritage Partner), London Metropolitan Archives and Eastside Community Heritage. In the nineteenth century, London’s eastern boundary was at Bow Creek, where its noxious industries began to congregate. From shipbuilding, to silver, iron, oils, soap, rubber and manure, London’s industry was developing on the fringes of the city. By the completion of the Albert Dock in 1880, Silvertown and North Woolwich had effectively become an ‘island’. It was bordered by the Thames to the south, and by the Royal Docks and its lock entrances to the north, east and west, the only way in or out was by bridge, ferry or tunnel. It’s been a fantastic term for the school. We have had three advisors with Ofsted training spend a day in the school and all three have said that there is no reason to doubt that the school is still outstanding. All three confirmed the strength of our results and the warm atmosphere in the school. This is very encouraging for us. In addition, we have received the highest amount of first choice applications that the school has ever received (392 for 300 places) and the second highest figure in the borough overall. There were over a thousand applications for the school in total. I believe that this shows the high regard in which we are held by the community. The current year 11 cohort are working hard and look set to achieve even stronger results than the last two year 11 groups. As you will know, we are remodelling our uniform so that we continue to raise the bar in terms of students’ appearance. Many of our students, parents and staff have expressed a desire for the uniform to include a blazer so we have added this to the list. It would not be fair to expect the current year 10 (next year’s year 11) to buy a blazer for one year’s worth of use, so we have made the new uniform optional for those students.

The way that we live, work and learn has changed completely and many of us have faced new challenges – including the young people that are speaking tonight. They have each taken part in Jack Petchey’s “Speak Out” Challenge! – a programme which reaches over 20,000 young people a year. They have had a full day of training in communica�on skills and public speaking and have gone on to win either a Regional Final or Digital Final and earn their place here tonight. Every speaker has an important and inspiring message to share with us, and we are delighted to be able to host them at this virtual event.
