Patrick Henry
LIBERTY UNIVERSITY PATRICK HENRY: THE SIGNIFICANCE OF HARMONIZED RELIGIOUS TENSIONS A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF THE HISTORY DEPARTMENT IN CANDIDACY FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS IN HISTORY BY KATIE MARGUERITE KITCHENS LYNCHBURG, VIRGINIA APRIL 1, 2010 Patrick Henry: The Significance of Harmonized Religious Tensions By Katie Marguerite Kitchens, MA Liberty University, 2010 SUPERVISOR: Samuel Smith This study explores the complex religious influences shaping Patrick Henry’s belief system. It is common knowledge that he was an Anglican, yet friendly and cooperative with Virginia Presbyterians. However, historians have yet to go beyond those general categories to the specific strains of Presbyterianism and Anglicanism which Henry uniquely harmonized into a unified belief system. Henry displayed a moderate, Latitudinarian, type of Anglicanism. Unlike many other Founders, his experiences with a specific strain of Presbyterianism confirmed and cooperated with these Anglican commitments. His Presbyterian influences could also be described as moderate, and latitudinarian in a more general sense. These religious strains worked to build a distinct religious outlook characterized by a respect for legitimate authority, whether civil, social, or religious. This study goes further to show the relevance of this distinct religious outlook for understanding Henry’s political stances. Henry’s sometimes seemingly erratic political principles cannot be understood in isolation from the wider context of his religious background. Uniquely harmonized -

Garrison ___________________________ Neil Kamil SAMUEL JOHNSON’S RAMBLER AND THE INVENTION OF SELF-HELP LITERATURE by John Steven Kinkade, B.A., M.A. Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of the University of Texas at Austin in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy The University of Texas at Austin December 2005 SAMUEL JOHNSON’S RAMBLER AND THE INVENTION OF SELF-HELP LITERATURE Publication No. ___________ John Steven Kinkade, Ph.D. The University of Texas at Austin, 2005 Supervisor: Elizabeth Hedrick This dissertation argues that Samuel Johnson’s Rambler, a series of essays written between 1750 and 1752, helped established a new genre of advice writing, the self-help book. This genre depends on a method of caring for the self that privileges an autonomous identity that defines itself, through labor, against upper class values. Though Johnson employs many of the tropes and tactics of courtesy and civility literature, his work offers a new focus on the discipline of one’s mind and the assertion of an independent self in an urban culture. Chapter 1 provides an overview of the history of conduct literature, following its changes from Renaissance courtesy literature, which focused on the court, to civility literature, which emphasized the importance of participation in a broader public sphere. -

1 Peers, Parliament and Power under the Revolution Constitution, 1685-1720 Philip Loft University College London PhD History, 2015 2 ‘I, Philip Loft, confirm that the work presented in this thesis is my own. Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis.' Signature: Date: 12/05/2015 3 Figure 1: Title Page of R. Gosling, The Laws of Honour, or A Compendious Account of the Ancient Derivation of All Titles, Dignities, Offices, &c as well as Temporal, Civil or Military (1714). This focus on honour and title perhaps represents our typical view of the peerage during the ‘long eighteenth century’. 4 Acknowledgements I would like to thank my two supervisors, Julian Hoppit and Jason Peacey, for their indispensable guidance and support. David Hayton and Perry Gauci kindly agreed to examine the thesis, and I am grateful for their advice and ideas. A number of archivists and librarians have been particularly helpful in providing access to archival sources, but those of the Parliamentary Archives require special thanks in providing me with so many documents detailing the activity of the House of Lords. I would also like to record my appreciation for the feedback on several parts of this thesis provided by the participants of the Bath Spa Conference ‘George I—300 Years on’, the Liverpool Conference ‘300 Years of Hanoverian Monarchy’, the Parliaments, Politics and People Seminar at the IHR, and the anonymous reviewers of the Journal of British Studies. The Arts and Humanities Research Council and UCL provided me with funds to pursue this thesis, for which I am very grateful. -

The Asia Pacific region’s largest contemporary visual arts event features 83 artists hailing from 35 countries and is presented free to the public across seven venues or ‘Embassies of Thought’ and multiple ‘in-between spaces’ around the inner city, from Friday 18 March until 5 June 2016. The exhibition is supplemented by a comprehensive schedule of public programs including daily guided tours, artist and curator-led talks, lectures, workshops, salons, reading groups and gatherings. Artistic Director Stephanie Rosenthal commented: “The ‘Embassies of Thought’ in the 20th Biennale have been conceived as temporary settings without set borders, representing transient homes for constellations of thought. The themes associated with each of these ‘embassies’ are inspired by the individual histories of each venue, whilst the ‘in between’ spaces speak to one of the key ideas in this Biennale exploring the distinction between the virtual and the physical worlds. -
