Martyrs in Mexico: A Mormon Story of Revolution and Redemption By F. LaMond Tullis Provo, Utah: Religious Studies Center; Salt Lake City: Deseret Book, 2018 Reviewed by Ignacio M. Garcia and Cindy Gonzalez hile not described as such, Martyrs in Mexico is a continuation Wof the story that author F. LaMond Tullis gave us in Mormons in Mexico, a classic work, first published in 1987, detailing the growth of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the country just south of the United States.1 Martyrs in Mexico, however, has a narrower scope, focusing on one community—San Marcos, Hidalgo—from which would come well-known individuals of the Church in Mexico. Why did Tullis choose San Marcos? The obvious answer is that this community holds an important place in Church lore. San Marcos was the place of one of the Church’s most remembered (though not necessarily among Ameri- can Saints) martyrdoms: that of Rafael Monroy and Vicente Morales, who were killed by a firing squad of Mexican revolutionaries for, the story goes, refusing to renounce their faith. Tullis seeks to correct what he calls the “varying degrees of confor- mity to the facts” that surround the case of the martyrdom and which have been the subject of “academic treatises . magazine articles, news- print, films, sound bites, diaries, journals, and family lore” (2). He begins by setting the context under which Monroy and Morales learned of and embraced the gospel and describing how that context led to their even- tual death. Past studies of this event have largely focused on Monroy, who was not only the branch president in San Marcos but also a well- to-do landowner in the region. -

Morgan n a bittersweet ceremony on January 29, 2013, Elder Daniel L. Johnson, Ia member of the Seventy and President of the Mexico Area, announced the transformation of Benemérito de las Américas, a Church-owned high school in Mexico City, into a missionary training center at the end of the school year.1 To the emotional students and faculty at the meet- ing, Elders Russell M. Nelson and Jeffrey R. Holland of the Quorum of the Twelve explained the urgent need to provide additional facilities for missionary training in the wake of President Thomas S. Monson’s announcement that minimum ages for missionary service were being lowered and the consequent upsurge in numbers.2 While The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has owned and operated other schools, this school was unique in the expansive role it played in Mexi- can Church history. -

Jackson message from the deans’ office Thinking Globally at the RSC n our day, it seems, everyone is thinking global. INowhere is global perspective more exciting than in the context of the gospel. The story of Church expansion in the international setting over the past several decades has been truly phenomenal. A recently published RSC volume, The Worldwide Church, indicates that over the last thirty years the Church has grown abroad over 500 percent. Fortuitously, this period of growth has coincided with the emergence of the Religious Studies Center as a significant publisher of Church history. As we reflect on the recent growth of the Church, we wonder what the membership of the Church will look like in the coming decades. The answer to this question has important implications for the RSC and its mission to “encourage and publish faithful scholarship.” Publishing works on global Church history and advancement of the Church worldwide has been a key commitment of the RSC. The list of recent RSC publications dedicated to such history includes Mormons in the Piazza: History of the Latter-day Saints in Italy, The Field Is White: Harvest in the Three Counties of England, Voice of the Saints in Taiwan, and Canadian Mormons. As the Church continues to grow and expand into various areas of the world, there will continue to be a wealth of opportunities to tell the story of LDS beginnings in these places. -

LDS Hispanic Americans and Lamanite Identity tyler balli Tyler Balli ([email protected]) is a master’s student in history at Virginia Tech. n September 1972, the Ensign published a piece called “What Is a ILamanite?” Using an “imaginary conversation” between different indi- viduals of Latin American descent and a Church leader, this article got to the heart of the complexity of Lamanite identification within The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.1 When this piece was published in the 1970s—and even long before—some Church leaders strongly encouraged Hispanics to identify as Lamanites, a name referring to a people found in the Church’s founding scripture—the Book of Mormon. Even with the Church’s encouragement, however, not all Hispanics jumped to identify as Lamanites. The “What Is a Lamanite?” piece is one of the only documents during the President Spencer W. Kimball time period that explored the diversity of beliefs about this term among Hispanics; it was “an important, if not over- looked, reminder that not all Saints whom Church leaders such as Kimball saw as Lamanites understood themselves in those same terms.”2 This paper seeks to recover some of the diversity and complexity expressed Pixabay. in that article and to add further depth, context, and perspective. Hispanics, “Lamanite” carries with it several connotations, and the degree to which Hispanics identify with it varies greatly, depending on the specific factors that influenced them, held an incredible from wholehearted and enthusiastic acceptance to a complete lack of identification. Mormon Missiology: An Introduction and Guide to the Sources David J. Whittaker Introduction Missionary work has been a central concern of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called Mormons) since their beginnings in 1830. The visions of Joseph Smith proclaimed the opening of a new dispensation in which the gospel of Jesus Christ would go forth to all nations. In their study of the Bible, particularly the New Testament, Latter-day Saint leaders identied with early Christian missionaries who were commissioned by the Master to “go ye therefore, and teach all nations” (Matthew 28:19). Latter-day Saint scriptures emphasized and reinforced this missionary outlook. Many passages in the Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenants described the world as a “eld . white already to harvest” (D&C 4:4; 6:3; 11:3; 12:3; 31:4; etc.), and the faithful were assured that no joy would be greater than that which came as a result of successful missionary work. They understood that once they heard the “good news,” they had a desire and an obligation to inform their neighbors (see D&C 88:81). These same scriptures told the stories and described the qualities of good missionaries (see, for example, Alma 17–26, 29; D&C 4). Early in the history of the church, missionaries were commanded to assemble “the elect” from throughout the world (D&C 29:7–8; compare D&C 110:11). Their work centered on the concept of the “gathering,” a two-phase process. First, missionaries were to preach the restored gospel of Jesus Christ to the honest in heart and then to administer the saving priesthood ordinances (beginning with baptism by immersion and the laying on of hands to receive the gift of the Holy Ghost) to those who accepted their message. -

Parker Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Toronto 2011 Abstract Since Mark Leone’s landmark 1979 study Roots of Modern Mormonism , a scholarly consensus has emerged that a key element of Mormon distinctiveness stems from one’s subscription to an alternate narrative or experience of history. In the past generation, scholarship on Mormon historical thought has addressed important issues arising from these insights from anthropological and sociological perspectives. These perspectives have joined a rich and venerable controversial literature seeking to “debunk” Mormon narratives, apologetic scholarship asserting their epistemic harmony or superiority, as well as fault-finding scholarship that constructs differences in Mormon historical thinking as a problem that must be solved. The lacuna that this project begins to fill is the lack of scholarship specifically in the field of intellectual history describing the various alternate narratives of the past that have been and are being developed by Mormons, their contents, the methodologies by which they are produced and the theories of historical causation that they entail.
